Julie really does not want to do this. I mean she is 87, will be turning 88 this year. She’s retired from film beyond easy voice work and lives on the east coast now, far away from Hollywood. I hope they can entice her to come back somehow— maybe she’d agree to do something ala Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia 2? I would much rather her final live action movie be Princess Diaries III rather than the Tooth Fairy!

It tickles me that Sandra Oh still has so much affection for this film. But I really don’t want a PD3 without Julie!

I don't think it's such a good idea. With Gary Marshall dead, I don't think it would be able to have the same mood as the first two. Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews might help, but I think he was a critical player in this too.

Disney better move heaven and earth to get Julie Andrews to return for this. I need at least Cher-in-Mamma-Mia-2 level of screentime.

This project has also had so many starts and stops, so who knows if it will actually happen. Now is the best time since these ideas started floating, though, because I think it will the theatrical release it deserves.

I also think Disney’s aware that a big part of the success with Hocus Pocus 2 and for the interest in Freaky Friday 2 is the reunion of the original cast members. So I think they will try very hard to bring back Julie, I just hope they accommodate all her wishes to make that possible.

I hope she might agree to do a short cameo if they film it near her home and she doesn't have to take a flight to them. It would be great to see her on screen again.

Julie is 89. I hope she’s just enjoying her days. If she can and wants to return that’s great but let’s not pressure an elderly woman into working.

Well, I don’t think any fans online are capable of pressuring her into doing this movie. Disney themselves couldn’t get her for Mary Poppins Returns. I just hope Disney gives her anything that would incentivize her to make an appearance in this film. She’s more than worth it.

I admit my desire to see her in this movie is entirely selfish, but I would never want Julie to be forced into something she doesn’t want to do. While she’s retired from film acting, she still makes TV appearances, she does lots of voiceover work, and she also directed a stage musical this summer, so I believe if Disney makes the right offer and she’s able to make certain stipulations (for example, a short shooting schedule), she’d accept.

EDIT: Anne Hathaway shared this reaction to the report, which IMO, basically confirms her involvement despite no casting news being announced: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DAtwgxYJ ... k0bG5ieA==

Brelly, you probably already knew this, but Julie turned down a cameo in Mary Poppins Returns because she didn"t want anyone to go, "There's that Mary Poppins", like she didn't want people to think the "real one" was not the Emily one.

Yes, that is the official story. But when I worked at Disney, I met Jeff Kurtti, the Disney historian. He was doing a signing for his book on the Poppins movies. There was nobody else there to meet him so we spoke for an hour about all things Poppins. He told me Julie was actually in talks and open to appearing in the sequel, but Disney wouldn’t give her what she wanted to return. Which makes sense to me, because very late in the game during pre-production for the film, Dick van Dyke was giving interviews saying Julie was also going to return with him. When you watch the film, you can tell pretty easily that the role played by Angela Lansbury was intended for Julie Andrews. The story about not upstaging Emily Blunt was, I believe, a characteristically gracious way of explaining her absence— but I believe she could have and would have returned if Disney had played ball.

There were no hard feelings, by the way, on Julie’s part or the team behind “Returns.” Julie apparently wrote the whole team of the sequel a very nice email of praise after watching the film, and Rob Marshall, the director, is an old friend of Julie’s (he choreographed her in Victor/Victoria on Broadway) and actually most recently appeared in a documentary about her late husband. At the time, though, Warner Bros did scoop her up to voice the Karathen sea monster in Aquaman, which was then set to premiere on the same day as Mary Poppins Returns, although the release dates were later changed.

Deadline, who broke the news about Adele Lim directing, is now reporting Anne Hathaway as officially returning.

I have faith that Anne Hathaway, who tagged her production company in her Instagram post about the announcement, will do everything she can to make a Julie Andrews appearance possible in a third PD film. We’re in good hands, I think.

I think the biggest news is that the film is not a prequel (didn’t know people were speculating that actually) and I think this is our first confirmation the film is going to theaters
