Huh, I’m surprised they’re shooting for a theatrical release for this movie. Seems like it would be more at home on Disney+. Unless they introduce a new lead with box office potential.

It seems National Treasure 3 isn't happening, after all.
Cage is matter-of-fact when he speaks about how he went from headlining blockbusters to going straight to VOD. “The phone stopped ringing,” he says. “It was like, ‘What do you mean we're not doing National Treasure 3? It's been 14 years. Why not?’ ” He would often get a circuitous answer, but he knew what the elephant in the room was. “Well, Sorcerer's Apprentice didn't work, and Ghost Rider didn't really sell tickets. And Drive Angry, that just came and went.’ ” [...]

He waves away suggestions that National Treasure 3 is happening, after I mention that Jerry Bruckheimer told me they were developing something. “When I talk about fair-weather friends in Hollywood, I'm not talking about Jerry. I'm talking about Disney,” he says. “They're like an ocean liner. Once they go in a certain direction, you've got to get a million tugboats to try to swivel it back around.”

Q: Will there be another National Treasure?

Nicholas Cage: No, the priority was to turn it into a TV show so I would say probably not.

Apparently, this is still in the works but without the original screenwriters.
In regards to sequels to other legacy franchises, Bruckheimer says he’s still working on another feature follow-up to National Treasure even though there’s a series in the works at Disney+.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that a script for National Treasure 3 has been written and they're just waiting on Cage to approve it. "Let's hope; we're working on the script right now. Hopefully [Cage] likes it, but it's really good. So I think we'll get it to him shortly," Bruckheimer told us.

The mega-producer let the news slip while discussing the new National Treasure spinoff series National Treasure: Edge of History, which is now streaming on Disney+. "We said we'd like to make another National Treasure and they said, ‘Sure, let's come up with a new cast,'" Bruckheimer said. "At the same time, we were developing National Treasure for the theaters with Nicolas Cage—which we still are. So, that's ongoing."

Q: In the past year, Jerry Bruckheimer has said a script for a third movie written by Chris Bremner is finished. Have you seen this script?

Justin Bartha: There is a script. That’s all I’ll say. There have been a few different scripts, actually, but the one thing that has to happen is for all the stars to align. I had seen something awhile ago, and it was solid, but the unsung hero of these movies that doesn’t get mentioned as much is Jon Turtletaub. Those movies really are an extension of his being. He is very smart and funny, and has a buoyancy to him that mirrors the tone of the movies. I think he has to feel really comfortable and feel like he can see the movie before it happens — and it is getting closer to that.

Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, the duo who co-wrote the first two National Treasure movies and created the Disney+ National Treasure: Edge of History series, tell EW they are not involved in the franchise's third big-screen installment.

"JB Films is actively working on developing a third movie," Marianne said in an interview for Edge of History, referring to Jerry Bruckheimer's production company Jerry Bruckheimer Films. "We can't wait." Cormac added. "We would be very happy."

When asked if they are part of the new movie, which is now in development nearly 15 years after the sequel hit theaters, the pair said they are not (for now). "We were very much focused on the show [Edge of History], so we haven't talked to anyone," Cormac said. "We talked to Jon. We text Jon Turteltaub, who is the director, and he's developing it." Turteltaub directed 2004's National Treasure and 2007's National Treasure: Book of Secrets. However, Cormac said, "We're there if they need us," before adding, "But we know that they can get it done."

Cage says it's not happening while Bruckheimer says it is.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Cage speaks on the chances of National Treasure 3. When prompted about the development of National Treasure 3. Cage stated bluntly that “No, there is no National Treasure 3.” Check out the full quote from Cage below:

"Here we go! See, you're the one that brings these things up and they go out and they eclipse everything else. No, there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don't look at Disney, okay? It's not there."

In an exclusive interview with legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer, we asked Bruckheimer about Nicolas Cage's comments and the future of the franchise. Despite the film's 17-year development hell, Bruckheimer is still optimistic about the project, saying:

"Well, we hope there's a National Treasure 3 . We've been working on it for quite a while. We have a brilliant writer working on it right now, so hopefully, if we get a script in a timely fashion, we'll send it to Nic [Cage] and, if he likes it, we'll make another one. We certainly would like to."
