I can't say I'm surprised. This was a very self-congratulatory, fanservice-y short with very little story that even though appealed to Disney's base, it didn't do anything to people from the industry. Let's not forget that unlike the Animated Feature category, the ones who bother voting for the nominations here are usually the indie and foreign filmmakers of the branch.

... this is why I stand the Oscars (much less, ANY awards show) less and less each year. Because they've become more pretentious as time goes on. Most of their nominees for the categories that anyone cares even remotely about (Best actor, best picture, etc.) are for movies that are "artsy" and boring. Meanwhile, the films that people love get saddled with categories that not a lot of people think worthwhile (special VFX, makeup, whatever).

Ahh… I don’t really pay attention to this category most years, I just assumed the Disney name and the anniversary angle would carry it to a nomination and even a win. Certainly, I think Disney was pushing it in front of a lot of eyeballs… I assume they were expecting a nom here. But most of the reactions here don’t seem very surprised, so I guess it’s not as big of a deal.

I mean, there was a Ton of diversity in once upon a studio was there not? With that many characters its hard not to have diversity. I agree with you though. There shouldn't be this checklist they go through, its no longer authentic.

yes this is a new rule. many actors have called this out.

I was half interested in watching this but I think it would be a bigger insult to watch the classic real Disney characters like Alice, Tinkerbell, Bambi, Belle, Stitch mix with cgi creatures or bob iger's agenda characters.

Oscars have quality for ignoring this. I prayed daily everynight that Oscars would be smart and snub this so I am glad that God is on my side of truth!

there are all kinds in this world believe it or not. sometimes I feel I am the minority opinion but wehnever I post in places I always get positive response from others. Remember many stay silent for fear of vilification and only quietly reach out. in fact I came here cuz of that very same reason that I saw people who think as I do.

Wait a second, I’m confused. It’s nominated for an Emmy but I thought this was snubbed by the Oscars. Was it even eligible for the Oscars? And if it was eligible for the Oscars, how can it be eligible for the Emmys? Did Disney even submit the short to the Oscars? What’s going on?

I thought the screenings at the El Capitan were meant to be Oscar-qualifying, but I know most people saw it on ABC/Disney+/YouTube.

Upon rewatching The Hunchback of Notre Dame, I was reminded how beautiful Tom Hulce’s singing voice is. And I was just thinking how remarkable it was they asked him back for this short— looking at his Wiki, he’s been more or less retired from acting for the past 15 years. And Quasi has never been a character Disney particularly utilized. I’d love to know the process for how they chose which characters got a solo in the finale of this short. I mean, they did a pretty bang up job of choosing— if I was involved in the decision making, I’d absolutely be advocating for Paige O’Hara as Belle, Tom Hulce as Quasimodo, Judy Kuhn as Pocahontas, and Jodi Benson as Ariel to be spotlighted for their beautiful and iconic voices. I mean, for me the final choices are perfect (except when Scuttle sings over Ariel, I hate that here… and apparently Lea Salonga is singing as Mulan, but she also gets drowned out by Snow’s vibrato which is unfortunate). I get the sense that a lot of the people working at Disney now grew up during the Renaissance and were heavily influenced by that era so that might also explain those choices. I know this short wasn’t a hit with a lot of posters here, but I love it unabashedly. It’s a little schmaltzy, but a 100th anniversary is a good time to be schmaltzy. And when “Feed the Birds” from Poppins starts playing with that portrait of Walt… oh my goodness!

I know this short wasn’t a hit with a lot of posters here, but I love it unabashedly. It’s a little schmaltzy, but a 100th anniversary is a good time to be schmaltzy. And when “Feed the Birds” from Poppins starts playing with that portrait of Walt… oh my goodness!

When Walt was interviewed and asked why his films were so maudlin, he said, "Millions of sentimentalists have taste as schmaltzy as mine". Schmaltz is Disney's signature, it should never be left out. I love the short, and so did my friends. My sentimental male friend cried. I felt a bit emotional, too.

The short was eligible for the Oscars as it received an Oscar-qualifying run in theaters. It was submitted to the Oscars and even made it into the shortlist at the time. The Emmys allow films that were submitted to the Oscars to be eligible for Emmys too as long as they have not received an Oscar nomination and fulfill their other eligibility requirements and criteria.
