I would've preferred Disney had made it, but at the same time I'm excited there'll be a new animated adaptation of the fairy tale and Rich Moore is not a bad director. Also, if it's a musical, perhaps Alan Menken will do the music since he's working for Skydance now on Spellbound.

Agreed. Despite how I think both Wreck-It-Ralph films were the truly great ones from Moore. But I`m sure that his take on the material willl be edgier than Disney`s.

That paragraph on the wiki entry doesn't have a source for El Dorado; just for Sindbad. I searched online, but was unable to find a source claiming El Dorado was in development at any point at Disney.

Interestingly...I've noticed a couple of Skydance Animation employees on LinkedIn mention on their profiles an unannounced feature film called Cosmic Motors. Could this be a resurrected version of Dean Wellins' Cosmic 3000 film that was being developed at Disney?

Interesting. Perhaps Lasseter is doing this with more than one project. After all, Spellbound's story also sounds a bit like Raya and the Last Dragon's, as we discussed in that movie's thread.

I finally settled on a couple of Bill Peet books and the Rudyard Kipling story “The Man Who Would Be King,” and worked each up into short paragraphs...The Eisner-Katzenberg pitch meeting...Jeffrey was cool to a director’s idea about “Hansel and Gretel” from a Valley Girl perspective. He didn’t like my Bill Peet pitches, but thought that “The Man Who Would be King” had possibilities, and asked to see a treatment.

That interesting. Do we know for sure that The Man Who Would Be King served as an inspiration The Road to El Dorado? The similarities could have been unintentional like in the case of Hamlet/The Lion King. I've found that another book was used as the inspiration for the film.

Before Dreamworks was announced, Jeffrey Katzenberg approached us with a big thick book in hand: Conquest: Montezuma, Cortes and the Fall of Old Mexico by Hugh Thomas. He wanted to do an animated film set in that world.

I pulled out my copy of the book, coincidentally, The Men Who Would Be King, about DreamWorks, and it doesn't mention TMWWBK as the inspiration for the film (nor the Thomas book Rossio mentioned). And I'm not finding anything on Google out of Katzenberg's mouth. But I read years ago that it served as inspiration. But a quick Google search does bring up lots of reviews that mention TMWWBK as inspiration:

Did anyone else watch the 2023 Disney parks magical Holiday celebration? They showed a Disney parks commercial with some vines growing out of a house.... correct me if I’m wrong, or unless it is indeed based on fun and fancy free Mickey and the beanstalk, is this possibly a hint towards gigantic somehow, because what else is that from?………

Those are both so pretty!

I'm sure I've said before, but I was really interested in seeing a Disney protagonist with a pregnant wife (similar to how I actually liked Strange World featuring a 40-year-old dad as its lead). That's just such a unique station in life to represent in the space of Disney films, seeing characters work through the immediate aftermath of "And They All Lived Happily Ever After."

To this day Gigantic remains one of the top 5 most interesting WDAS movies from the Revival era imo, and that says alot with the lack of information weve got.
I agree with Patch, not only because with the next unspoken steps of traditional Fairytale marriage etc that are always avoided, and they always make it look as if stepping into this next new reationship is the best part in contrast to being in one for years (as if its saying it wont work out after a few months after marriage )but also he would have been the ONLY male fairytale musical protagonist this CENTURY....

Although i would LOVE to finally see older main WDAS protagonists in their mid 20s/ early 30s and not the stereotypical "cute teen girl" we get every 2 years, I would prefer them to retool Beanstalk with Jack staying a Teen as it would make more sense in the context of the fairytale with him being a troublemaker and having to make his mother proud, which is a more emotional narrative imo as its a good coming of age story aspect.


There are many Fairytales outthere who focus on married couples or parents as main protagonists so they can adapt them instead of changing the character elements in well known stories
(Also Jacks wife would have been the 2nd on screen pregnant woman in a WDAS movie? Aside from Bruja Abuela of course)
For example theres a well known grimm fairytale called "The fisherman and his wife" and it taps into the ups and downs of a relationship and how they wanna polish it up once they get unlimited magical wishes, I would love WDAS to adapt that


I rather get more yearly concept art or insight news about Cancelled Gigantic than news about upcoming movies like Moana 2 or Zootopia 2 and the rest of the 2020s slate that feel as risktaking and mindblowing as Frozen 2.

Found this while scrolling concept art of Gigantic again, thinking of it's missed potential while looking at them. I came across this from the Lost Media Wiki, it can also be seen in the Disney fandom wiki page for this movie. It even has the 2017 disney copyright at the bottom right of the picture. According to Lost Media Wiki, this was found earlier in the year and I noticed that in this thread, no one was able to spot it so I might as well share it here hehehe
