I completely agree. I'm afraid that in the end this movie isn't going to stand on its own.

Snow White had 12 characters ( including the Slave in the Magic Mirror but not counting the forest creatures) but every single one played an important role in the story.

You lack faith in the ability to be surprised.

@Mooky

I am in perfect agreement with you Mooky. However, I am trying to stay optimistic, and truly hope that beneath the surface there is a good, maybe even great film that will not actually need those "allusions" to find its voice. (In the end, I trust they are merely decoration - as superficial as that seems.)

I will admit I have lost some of my faith in WDAS recently. Not in their ability to create a good film - I have no doubt they can easily push out a competent film without problems. However, I am not expecting greatness out of the studio for now. They seem to have hit a rough patch.

Does any animation studio ever not hit a rough patch? Honestly.

Well, I meant it's curious both are Black, but yes, there's a bigger focus on diversity nowadays, and like you said, female characters are now given other interests besides romance, so there's a higher chance for both things to coincide.
Mooky wrote: Thu Sep 07, 2023 6:36 am There's a fine line between a casual reference and fan service, and so far Wish seems to fall more towards the latter. I get it, it's a celebration of Disney animation, but to me the way to celebrate the legacy is through themes, characters, music, not by how many allusions to prior works they can cram into the movie and then be super obvious about them. I mean, Belle makes a cameo in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", but no press release for THOND was like, "Both BatB and THOND are set in France, so to celebrate that we've put Belle in the movie." It was a short appearance that only eagle-eyed fans would notice. The whole Teens thing (apart from the stupid name) being inspired by the Dwarfs, it's kind of sad and desperate to me. I also feel they won't add much if anything to the movie -- too many underdeveloped supporting characters take away from the main character and their journey and can inadvertently turn the whole story into a series of episodic adventures (see also Meet the Robinsons, Encanto, Raya, Strange World). It's perfectly fine to have a cast of only 7 to 8 characters, including sidekicks. If my count is correct, Wish has like 15.
Personally, I'm not worried about the number of characters, but the references thing does sound worrisome to me too. Well, I agree with Jules that the movie can still be good in spite of them if they really have a good and solid story. Enchanted, for example, shows that it can be done, in my opinion. But sometimes when they focus too much on these things, the story and characters suffer as a result. We'll see. I hope they managed to make a good film that has its own identity and doesn't feel like a mix of recycled elements.

Sunday, actually, since the Walt Disney Studios presentation is that day.

Honestly, I don’t even know if we’ll get the trailer this weekend/Sunday.

I feel we may be waiting til mid-September

They promised trailers in plural, and Wish is the one movie that needs a trailer since The Marvels has had 2 trailers and a special look recently

Who’s they and when did they promise? I don’t remember ever reading that. All I read is that people in attendance would see exclusive stuff. I think you’re making assumptions based off that description, when they could all go horribly wrong. I hope the trailer drops on Sunday, but, I’m cautious on if it might happen or not.

Well, only 75 days out from the release of Wish.

Never thought I’d say this, but we have to call on Disney to meet with SAG-AFTRA and ask them to allow them to have an interim agreement for the stars to promote Wish so that film’s marketing campaign is proper and so the film’s chances of being a hit aren’t lost.

The only way I feel that may be possible is something I never thought would work but might be my last resort… launching a petition on change.off to call on Disney and SAG to secure an interim agreement to allow Wish to be promoted by its cast.

Never thought I’d have to get that to happen by doing it through the one thing I think doesn’t amount to anything: an online petition.

Oh well. I’m calling shotgun on leading the charge to get it spearheaded.

Anyone wanna join, I’ll be waiting for a heads up.

The Saturday panels of Destination D23 will be livestreamed, but they're mostly about the parks. Too bad the Sunday ones aren't, though I totally understand why since people in attendance pay to see the exclusive content.

By the way, here's a Disney Parks backpack from eBay:

And the other day I forgot to say that there seems to be a (not so) hidden Mickey on the "smiley-face cake" (as it's called in the toy description) Asha and her family are eating in one of the Lego sets. I guess it's yet another Disney reference.

We haven’t seen the parents outside of these Lego sets, right?

This movie could really go in any direction for me. I really don’t know what to expect. Asha and the wishing star look well designed, I’ll give ‘em that.

Like Farerb said, Asha's mother and grandfather can be seen among the public in the teaser trailer. She looks a bit like Ariana Debose to me in this screenshot.

The recent TV spot also gave us an almost full-body look at them.

I feel the same way. Some aspects look good, but others not so much. Also, most, if not all, of the images and story details we've gotten so far seem to be from the first act of the movie. We still don't know much about the rest or what the main adventure will be. I think there was some mention of a journey Asha has to embark on and there's an Asha travel doll, so probably there'll be some kind of journey. Maybe the first full trailer will give us more info about that.

By the way, searching for Asha dolls to see if I remembered correctly about a travel doll, I saw there's one listed as "Disney Wish red dress doll." Maybe Asha has a red dress in the movie, although it could also be a Dahlia doll.

I hate the clothes, they all are so basic, the only ones having fun with the Al Andalus period of time are Amaya and Magnífico

And yes I guess makes sense that the royals have money to have the better designs of clothes, but it's a Disney movie I don't want boring clothes, Encanto had really colorful and beautiful clothes and I'm sure people in Colombia at that time had more simpler clothes

BTW trailer confirmed for tomorrow, they said they will show stuff about the movie and what else would they show if not a trailer?
