The Princess and the Frog Live-Action?

Post by Sotiris »

Sources close to We Got This Covered – the same ones who told us Aladdin was getting a sequel, which has since been confirmed – have informed us that 2009’s The Princess and the Frog is another property that the Mouse House is looking to give a new coat of paint. And while plans can always change, our sources stress that after seeing how well their recent live-action remakes have been doing at the box office, the studio is very eager to continue pumping them out for many years to come.

Maybe if we stop sharing their stories, they will stop publishing baseless rumors?

I know this isn't happening, but I’d be here for it, personally. The only downside I can think of is that Randy Newman might actually be asked to make new songs for the live-action film.

Maybe Whoopi Goldberg could play Mama Odie.

Q: Now with Splash Mountain remodel, is a Tiana live-action closer than we think?

Skyler Shuler: It's coming.

Q: Do you think they'll announce The Princess and the Frog live-action soon?

Skyler Shuler: Doubt it. It's in the very very early development stages.

I'd cry with happiness if this actually came to be. And that isn't even hyperbole. Pleasepleaseplease. And a live-action film could fix the issues in the middle of the film by throwing out the buddy roadtrip aspect and giving Tiana & Naveen a duet (even if it's just them singing "Never Knew I Needed"). In the miracle event that this actually happened: I know it would be disrespectful not to ask Randy Newman first, but I'd love if they got Menken to be the composer since he's been a part of so many of the re-makes already--just so we could finally hear what a Menken theme for Tiana would've been like. Let me have my dreams.

Lee entrusted Meghie to write and direct Tiana, a Disney+ series based on the character from The Princess and the Frog. Meghie, who had been moved by the story of Disney’s first Black princess, had reached out to Disney’s live-action studio about a potential film adaptation of the 2009 property. Nothing came of it, but last summer Meghie received a call from her agent indicating that Lee wanted to meet her.

Now, I will say, the idea of a live-action Princess and the Frog has floated around Disney for a few years now. There have been production grids making the rounds prepping members of talent that this could be happening. Whether or not the grid is from Meghie’s original idea remains to be seen. That said, I believe Disney will tackle a live-action adaptation sooner rather than later, especially with the property’s resurgence and the fact that the Disney live-action remakes have been financially successful for the studio.

If Meghie (whoever that is) proves herself with Tiana, I'd love her to be the one to direct TP&TF. I think a TP&TF live-action remake absolutely will happen eventually--even if it's just as a Disney+ title--because it's the only major film with Black characters that WDAS has (STILL) and Tiana's legacy as the first Black Disney princess. TP&TF becoming the new theme for Splash Mountain may have simply accelerated things as far as encouraging them to make new product based on the film--couldn't be happier!

If Randy Newman didn't want to return for a remake (and why would he since he apparently hated doing a Disney musical film   ), I really wish they'd bring on Menken for additional songs. After all, he had been attached to the film before Newman anyway ("Love Can't Be Denied"). And he also worked on the score that included part of her theme in Ralph Breaks the Internet, right? Tiana is a fantastic character and deserves a better theme than what Randy Newman provided.

Yes, Menken was attached to The Frog Princess before Newman, however the song "Love Can't Be Denied" wasn't for that project. It was for The Snow Queen.

Menken only wrote the song "A Place Called Slaughter Race" and the pop version of it at the end credits "In This Place". He didn't work on the score. That was written by Henry Jackman who had also scored the original.

Oh, that's a shame. But still, his prior involvement on the project would make him the perfect choice if Newman decides he doesn't want to come back (and God-willing he won't  ).

I don't know the woman and I don't believe this is genuine speculation, just fans of her putting it out there, but this makes me believe the rumors of a TP&TF Live-action film must have a little truth to them.

I had wrote this in the Moana remake thread on the subject of remake changes where they "fix" criticisms of the original, I ended up on a tangent about what they might do to TP&TF when it's remade, but then it became long, so I thought it would be better to move it here:

If they find a way for Tiana and Naveen to become human sooner though--or perhaps have them changing forms back and forth several times*--that is one improvement they could make. Well, and a better soundtrack if they involved Pasek & Paul, Menken, Beyonce, someone like that, but I wouldn't be surprised if they cut the songs from that one altogether if even Mulan's music wasn't iconic enough for them to keep.

* Perhaps the power being extended from Naveen to Tiana through the kiss at the beginning could be worked in a way where the magic only works at half strength because it's been stretched out to two people so to speak. What I mean, for example, is Tiana is human while Naveen is a frog and Naveen is human while TIana is a frog, etc. until the ending when they're finally both human at the same time from the magic being broken at the end via their marriage. They could even have them switch out forms by kissing one another again when it's necessary. Now I think of it, that would be really cute actually!

She's a great actress, although seems like she'd be way out of league for a Disney remake.

Grace Randolph said the following about the recent rumored castings for this film and the Hercules and Tangled remakes:
VHS: Live-action Princess and the Frog. I've seen some headlines. Is it true?

Grace Randolph: Great question! I asked about that because there've been a lot of Disney live-action headlines lately and I found out that because there's no new headlines because of the strikes a lot of scoopers to keep having content to put out are mining old casting wish lists. So these are in a lot of cases very old casting wish lists that have not been updated, so take them with a huge grain of salt.

I had thought something like that was going on. Low-level journalists trying to pass off wishlists as "rumors" that we're all just going to forget in a couple of days anyways.

Probably just a rumor, I guess? That said, I think a TP&TF remake will definitely happen down the road, regardless of whether Snow White fails or not.

They would only remake TP&tF if the original was a successful film, right?

So does that mean if Disney makes this they are basically admitting hand drawn animation was killed off for no reason?

Honestly, I would love it if this was true!! I think The Princess and the Frog would be great as a live-action film. That being said, I definitely do not want traditional animation to end.
