Agree with the last part. It seems this one will be the same situation as the New Alice in wonderland series

Really? Just because the 1989 Little Mermaid was animated there can't be another animated, but Black, Ariel?

Everything is part of a 10 years plan to create a cinematic universe. Next year We will have the irish mermaid followed by Flounder king of the seas and Ursula:multiverse of madness
Everything looks so unnecessary.

Do not forget that the Alice in Aliceโ€™s Wonderland bakery is the Great granddaughter of the original Alice (who may possibly be appearing on the show soonโ€ฆโ€ฆ :-) And more than potentially the daughter of adventures in Wonderland Alice :-) #Itโ€™sAllConnected

I think that they are loosing their minds. It looks like they have a lack of creativity and they are not able to create new characters with new stories.

Ursula's design is cute, with the whole belt thing. I do wish it had been more like the animated film the way the Alice show was, but these Disney Junior shows are the fluffiest of fluff fare anyway, so... I can sort of imagine Amber Riley doing the voice. Whenever it ends up airing, I might record it when and just FF through to see any Ursula scenes out of curiosity.

Have no idea what Yoruba is but Frankly, get over it. There's literally nothing you can do about it. Like at all. Why does disney attract people like you since the dawn of time? Are that much of a fan of little mermaid? I bet you gave that horrible excuse for a sequel and prequel a pass.

Return to the sea is actually quite good, I actually almost like it better than the original little mermaid :-) I donโ€™t understand why everyone hates it so much (Let alone apparently liking it better than Arielโ€™s beginning, but I would agree way more with you about that) as they handled Arielโ€˜s character very naturally and not over the top. The only major flaw that I can find is Scuttle being a little dumb at the beginning of the movie having knocked his head and forgot to tell Melody about her birthday, but then again thatโ€™s the point, he supposed to be more than a bit of an idiot, and โ€œscuttle brainedโ€œ eh? :)

This has to be a joke. No way is someone actually creating and designing this. This comes off as bad fanart.

It has never been confirmed Triton is an actual god. It's not like The Little Mermaid is Hercules.

According to Green Mythology, he is an actual god.

Troll harder.

Triton may share the name with the mythological god and may have been inspired by him, but as Duster said, nowhere in the movie is implied, let alone stated that he's the actual Triton from Greek mythology. Even in the original fairytale, the Sea King is just the Sea King. Phoebus was a Roman deity; does that mean the Hunchback character is a god as well?

Also, funny how these concerns about divine representation don't extend to Hercules where, a) the main character doesn't look even remotely Greek/Mediterranean, and b) the gods themselves are humanoids of different, unnatural colors. What's more, one of you seems happy enough to use one as their avatar, but sure, let's draw the line at a Black merman.

it's funny how after trying so hard you still couldn't adress my argument of adapting some african god and making him into a blonde white man.

Hercules totally looked greek. You'll probably have a heart attack when I tell you many greeks gods were described to have blonde hair and blue eyes as well.

And your denying of how Triton is based on greek myhtology is hilarious as well, but illustrates well how disingenious and hypocrite all your arguments are. Well sure then, Disney should make a movie about a female warrior who saves her country named Mulan, but make her a white woman and deny it has anything in common with the chinese myth lmao.

I don't know who you think you're fooling.

And it's funny how suddenly every european myth and setting can be filled with everyone that isn't white in main roles (or only allowing whites as the villains like Disney did in that Wish movie despite the setting and culture they use being stolen from white people), yet draw the like at white african gods or even some background white character appearing in movies like Moana or Raya.

First, breathe. Your avatar makes a lot of sense now.

Second, I'm feeling quite well, thank you for your concern. No, Hercules does not look typically Greek. There are fair-skinned and blond people in and around the Mediterranean region, but it's not a common genetic trait, and it definitely wasn't common back when the myths first originated. Some gods were described as fair-haired and fair-skinned, yes, but that came centuries after myths first originated and once they were being written down by historians. And I hope I don't need to point out that they're myths and not actual historical accounts, meaning whoever was writing them down imbued them with social narratives (including beauty standards) present at the time. Fair hair was seen as rare and attractive (there are records of Greek women bleaching their hair), and as gods were seen as pinnacles of beauty, it stands to reason some of them were described as fair-haired, fair-skinned, light-eyed. Notice I never said white and blond because fair-skinned and golden-haired in ancient terms don't equal white and blonde as we perceive them today.

Third, I clearly acknowledged Triton may have been inspired by the myth, but no matter how hard you try to spin it, the point stands that The Little Mermaid's Triton, as written and portrayed, is not supposed to be the mythological Triton.

And finally, to answer the question that didn't need answering: Yoruba gods would be and should be depicted as unmistakably black. Nordic and Slavic gods should be depicted as unmistakably white. Mulan should be depicted as unmistakably Asian. Why? Because there's something called historical and geographical context. To ignore it would be wrong. White Mulan and Asian Yoruba gods would make as much sense to me as black Heimdall does i.e. they wouldn't. And what's funny to me is that you're pouring out your frustrations to me and this forum instead of, I don't know, whole of Hollywood, when I actually agree with some of your points, namely that overdone political correctness and tokenism are bad. Where we differ is that I don't throw fits of bigotry just because a fictional fairytale character/mythological being with no historical context has been reinterpreted to be more racially inclusive.

Also, you haven't explained why a blue-skinned Greek god is more acceptable to you than a black merman. Using your logic, surely both should be unbelievable and offensive, no?

Yay, thank you Mooky! Yes, King Triton is not the same god from Greek mythology, he is only inspired by that myth. Otherwise Ariel would be a goddess. Nowhere in Greek mythology does it say Triton had six daughters and made one named Ariem human in a Mediterranean kingdom in the 19th century.
