Me too! It’s been more than 10 years! It’s staggering to think that somebody can work that long and that hard to make something that beautiful. I cannot imagine the work–it's mind blowing.

I agree it looks beautiful. I don't think I'll watch it though, I got strong 'Goodbye may seem forever' vibes from the trailer and that hits too close to home. I don't think I can deal with that. It's a real shame, since I love Andreas and his work. I hope the short does great.

I also thought of The Fox and the Hound, only with Rajah. :P There was one moment early in the trailer when the main character (the girl)'s face looked so much like Anastasia.

I'm shocked with all that time being put in, it doesn't have cleaned up linework like I was expecting. I get that some may prefer that look, and sometimes I like it too, but I see cleaned up linework so rarely now when these Disney turned independent animators go solo I start to miss it.

Interesting that he grew up loving the look of TSitS, TJB, Dalmatians. I assumed the look of this was simply a cost-saving measure, but it was deliberate because he prefers the lines to be undiluted as in those films.

I'm not surprised he thinks the animation turned out better for being on paper. I always wondered, back when reading about Disney artists moving to some kind of screen thing they would draw on, how drawing on something like a Kindle could turn out very good? It would make the utensil feel almost like a marker or even a piece of chalk rather than a pencil as you're doing it, I would think.

I draw digitally, used a variety of tablets. Usually they have some kind of texture, when they don't you can always add them if need be, but it will wear down your pen tips faster. And in the end its really just a superficial quality, the texture is just something you get used to. You cant truely mimic the texture of paper, but I don't think its needed. drawing is drawing, an animator can animate on anything.

You don't need paper to get paper quality. look at Aaron Blaise' animations he does in tv paint. It looks just as good as his paper animation.

Disney animation legend Andreas Deja (“The Lion King,” “Aladdin”), who presented the Spanish premiere of his 2D animation short, “Mushka,” presided over the international jury. He also held a Master Class on his 30 years at Disney, delivered a keynote address on the making of “Mushka” and led a three-hour drawing class on animated villains. “The students made me feel like a rock star,” he told Variety. “What better thing to hear than that the films I worked on still impact many people to this day,” he mused. From the scores of animation shorts he watched as a juror, he observed a surprising trend away from computer generated projects and a return to 2D and stop-motion techniques.

Looks like Disney Legend Andreas Deja's Featurette Film Mushka is releasing this year on streaming service.
Last weekend I was at the @comicfestival_muenchen and the @animation_festival_munich in Munich, and it was a real highlight! One of the most special moments: I was able to interview my childhood hero and idol, Disney legend @officialandreasdeja! We talked about his impressive career at Disney, from iconic characters like Scar and Hercules to his passion project "Mushka," a hand-drawn animated film that he produced himself. The film will be released via streaming later this year, so stay tuned! 🎬

would be ironic if released on Disney+!!!

this short if I recall right is based on Disney's 1960s movies.

looks like we have another update,

panel at SDCC for July 27, 2025 that will have Deja, Jim Cummings and Chris Sanders and others too.
1:00PM-2:00PM: Andreas Deja: 30 Years of Disney Villains – Disney Legend Andreas Deja‘s 30-year career ranges from his work on the groundbreaking animated/live-action hybrid Who Framed Roger Rabbit? to becoming one of Disney’s go-to lead animators, creating some of the most memorable and awe-inspiring Disney villains like Jafar (Aladdin), Scar (The Lion King), and Gaston (Beauty and the Beast). He will cover most major aspects of the animation process, including hand-drawn/2D character development, and show development art, pencil tests, and finished animation, highlighting many of the most acclaimed characters in the second golden age of Disney animated classic films. Joining Deja will be legendary voice actors Jim Cummings (Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Darkwing Duck, Hondo Ohnaka), Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, The Wild Robot), and other top names from the world of animation. Deja’s latest creation—the 2D animated short Mushka, which screened at Comic-Con in 2023—is scheduled for release on major VOD platforms in Fall 2025.

Sounds like a fun panel, hopefully the whole panel ends up on Youtube.

no updates on Mushka but Deja did mention some things, all Disney related.
-working with Bruce Reitherman on a documentary on Wollie Reitherman called Woolie
-working on a book on The Art of Milt Kahn.........this was like announced like July 1 on his blog.
-working with the team developing the new Villains Land at Disney World

hmmm, a 2D Master involved in Disney Parks, what shall this produce? Or is it just to help out since he's had a hand with Scar, Jafar, Gaston and even Horned King.
