Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpGo2_d3oYE
It appears to be largely the same as the one that leaked some weeks back, but in much better quality and with some more blanks filled in.
So I'm going off of almost pure visceral response right now, but ...
-That "Kiss the Girl" shot with Eric tearing up before he leans in closer to Ariel was deeply moving. Was not prepared to be so affected. Looks like they might actually have fantastic chemistry.
-The underwater acting and moving is looking very promising so far. Our first shot of Triton talking to Ariel is what really sold me for some reason.
-The talking animals look better than I'd expected, but I still don't think I'll count it as a strength of the movie.
-Holy goodness, did they just ask Halle to hold that climactic note for as long as she wanted and they'd just try to fit it all in?
-Loved that final shot of Ariel swimming to the surface with a pod of dolphins. Not sure what it's narrative placement is yet, but I'm here for it.
I mean, I've been let down by these remakes before, but it would be dishonest for me not to acknowledge now that the trailer got a very strong reaction from me.

Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
Well, to give my thoughts: I actually liked it, despite how I had some issues with it. The parts with the sea storm were captivating, as were the parts of Ariel being on land with Eric, her reprise of Part of Your World, Kiss the Girl and the scenes underwater (which is most likely going to be Under the Sea). The parts with the humans on land seemed a little Pirates of the Caribbean-esque. Melissa McCarthy seemed perfectly suitable as Ursula and Awkwafina as Scuttle was instantly recognizable (and made Scuttle sound femenine). My issues with it were how Jonah Hauer-King isn`t particlarly handsome enough as Prince Eric. Both Flounder and Sebastian looked awful and frankly didn`t seem to mesh with the tone of the trailer. Apparently it seems like King Triton is going to be in the grotto when he discovers Ariel`s secret. But otherwise it was a good trailer and it gives my hopes up that it`s going to be a great remake.

Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
It was okay. Eh. I just don't like most of it, the prince especially. TBH, I didn't think the song was very good either, the main POYW (from what I heard) is better. I actually thought Naomi Scott was a better singer, or rather she just had a more theatrical voice. I wonder why all the rooms (Ariel's grotto where Triton confronts her and Ursula's lair) are so small.... But it was difficult to tell because everything was so dark.
I don't mind the tentacles glowing as much as I thought I would. The shipwreck scene looked good. I liked the beginning of the trailer with the sort of haunted vocalizing (that I believe Vanessa does) of POYW. "Kiss the Girl" still looks awful. From what was shown, McCarthy is really the only sign of life in this movie to me (even though she's not a perfect pick either). I suppose the giant trident falling was from her death scene. It looks like it's falling on the shore. I only looked that closely because I was kind of hopeful they used that ending I had thought of in the past of how Ariel could defeat Ursula, of Ursula throwing the trident down at Ariel, missing, the trident shrinks to normal size and then Ariel uses it to shoot Ursula in the face. Oh well.

The soundtrack is already available to pre-order. It'll be released on May 19, one week before the film opens.
Five new official stills have also been released, and here are some hi-res screencaps from the trailer: part 1, part 2.
I didn't expect the trailer would air in the actual ceremony; I thought it would be released during the commercials. I think it was a good trailer, even though some elements are disappointing like some of the sets (like Disney's Divinity said, everything looks smaller) or Sebastian (I didn't like his voice). Halle looks beautiful and her acting seems good based on what we've seen so far. One thing I also liked regarding the costumes is Triton's armor, which seems to be made of multicolor shells.
As for the poster, it seems this time they're referencing both the one for the original with Ariel and Eric on the rock and the wave crashing behind them and the ending of "Under the Sea", but I don't like it too much. I think it's too crowded and disorganized.
By the way, on it we can see Ursula's collar and sleeves are indeed similar to what they looked like in that illustration:

Flotsam and Jetsam are also on the poster. They actually benefit from looking more realistic, in my opinion, as real eels are terrifying (Flounder also looks terrifying, by the way
).

We also got our first look at Eric's castle, Ursula's lair and what I guess is Eric's statue:

And are these King Triton's palace and throne room? I hope not, but I have a feeling they probably are.

Yes, it's possible it's not meant to be a particular scene.Disney Duster wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 10:24 pm Thanks D82, I feel that "after the storm" scene even more from the side by side. But like Divinity says, maybe it's not meant to be a particular scene. I say the sky is a mix of hopeful and somber. Like day's light surrounded by sorrowful clouds.
Yes, that was a nice shot. I also wonder when it takes place.PatchofBlue wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2023 7:15 pm -Loved that final shot of Ariel swimming to the surface with a pod of dolphins. Not sure what it's narrative placement is yet, but I'm here for it.

My only issue with this trailer was King Triton’s thick Spanish accent. It’s hilarious and ridiculous.
Wish they’d shown more things that aren’t shots lifted from the original film but I guess the trailer is just meant to go for nostalgia.

Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
I was blown away, this looks so good. I love Ursula's lair, it kinda looks like the Mososaur from Jurassic World
Halle's beautiful, Melissa's Ursula is gorgeous, and I kinda like Sebastian and Scuttle. Still having mixed feelings about Flounder though. The Part of your world (reprise) is gorgeous, I really like the iconic shot of her with the wave behind her. The shots from Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl look so good. I think I saw a shot of the trident making the whirpool n the sea....does this mean they'll keep the final battle with giant Ursula?
About the poster, it looks awesome, kinda like Aquaman.

Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
I LOVED the trailer!
Good catch PatchofBlue! I didn't notice Eric crying! Awwww! I like Eric in this trailer.
I love Ariel's blue dress, and don't mind her pink headband now!
I like Triton's armor now!
I like Ursula's costume now, now I see it has the collar! I thought Ursula went to Ariel's grotto, glad I was wrong and that Ariel goes to her lair instead.
"Part of Your World (Reprise)" is great!
Good thinking, D82, the new poster is those two things tied together! I really like the poster! I love busy posters. I like stuff with lots to look at.

And many people with no accents have parents who have them. For example my boyfriend, whose first language is Spanish, speaks English fluently with no accent (except a touch of New England where he was reared). His mother, on the other hand, sounds like Charo.

Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
@D82: It took me a while to even register what I was looking at with the picture of...Ursula's lair??? About the palace--That wouldn't surprise me. I think if the golden palace was in this, it would've been in the trailer last night. I'm pretty sure we'd already seen other pictures to know Eric's castle was already a dud, they went 0 out of 3. In comparison, the palace in Aladdin and castle in B&tB ended up being gorgeous (the latter was probably one of the best things about that film), and even Pride Rock looked like it's supposed to in TLK as well as Geppetto's shop in Pinocchio. If only this film hadn't been stuck with awful people like Marshall and Miranda in charge. Everything about this film is ugly as hell, they should be embarrassed. Most of the costumes have topped the Power Rangers witch from Mulan.
I had been planning to get the soundtrack for sure, but I'm debating just buying the first "POYW" track--possibly the original song for Ariel since it's being written for her so she'll actually sound good on it at least--and passing on the soundtrack as a whole, since the reprise sucked and you know the rest will be even worse (not a fan of Miranda's friend who's playing Sebastian, and of course PUS probably won't be much better than "Be Prepared" was). About as bad as Cravalho. Boggess' was a little better than theirs, listening to her version again as I'm writing this. At least she had a little emotion.
I must've missed Sebastian speaking. I still think Flotsam and Jetsam were only CGIed in there after online complaints. It'll be pretty easy to tell in the final film if they simply float around in the background with no dialogue or relevance to anything that happens onscreen. The poster is fine. It looks like a lot of individual character posters that have been cobbled together. It's better than the trailer was.

Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
New still and info about Ariel's new song "For The First Time" from Empire UK:

Source: https://www.empireonline.com/movies/new ... exclusive/One of those songs is a brand new Ariel number for star Halle Bailey, arriving at a pivotal point in the story – and as Marshall tells Empire, it’s titled ‘For The First Time’. “It’s about her experiences the moment she hits land,” he reveals. “We needed to create a number that could almost work as a montage, so we could take her through that experience – coming onto the land, what it’s like to put on shoes, have legs.” And given that that’s both everything Ariel’s dreamed of, but also something daunting and new, the song hopes to capture all of those emotions. “Anybody who has a different experience, it’s wondrous and scary at the same time,” says Marshall.
From the beginning, it was clear to the director that Bailey was the perfect choice to embody this version of Ariel. “There was an innocence and a purity to [Halle] as well as having fire,” he says. “It was this strange combination. And, of course, this magnificent voice.” Get ready to hear ‘For The First Time’ when it becomes part of our world this summer.
Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
No offense to anyone who likes it, but I pretty much thought the whole thing looked terrible, drab and lifeless, especially the animals. I hope that Snow White might turn out better looking cause they don't have to rely too much on CGI like this film does. Pretty much the only thing I'm looking forward to is the score.

Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
I know someone had joked about it having the same title as a Frozen song a few pages back, but it is interesting. You'd think people further up would've discouraged a song with a similar title, but then again I wouldn't be surprised if it was intentional, just like they gave Ariel (and Mulan) powers to make the character more like Frozen, so....
At least Bailey should sound good on a song that's tailor-made for her. The only thing good about the reprise was the very end. The last note started off very shrill, but at least the very end of that long note was good. My guess is the reason the rest of it wasn't great is because she was trying to control her breathing throughout the early lines in order to be able to hold out the note at the end.
Singing is more than just who can shout the loudest and longest, it's also about building up to something and having emotion in your voice.
On a theatrical song anyway, this might've been okay as an End Credits version on the radio, I guess. The iconic splash was a miss for me, too. There was something odd about her movement there. You know when you're on a really old park ride and the contraptions are jerky because they don't move well anymore--that's sort of how it was to me, like she was stuck in the costume and had to use a lot of force to jerk herself upwards.
I actually think Zegler will have better vocals in that film now that I've heard the reprise. I had been rooting for Bailey to give the better performance of the two since Zegler's personality is so...nails on chalkboard. Oh, well. Still, I don't expect Snow White to be very good either other than Gal Gadot. Like McCarthy, they're really the only sign of life to both films--although she's a better pick than McCarthy because she's the right age for that part. The ridiculous hair color trends in this film extends to Ursula, too, trying to imagine a wrinkle-less 40 year-old with white hair.

Both scenes look better in this trailer, but still less impressive than the ones from the original, in my opinion.Vlad Sicoe wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 2:36 am The shots from Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl look so good.
It's true, it looks a bit like Aquaman's poster. Also like Finding Nemo's.
I got the impression he was crying at first, but I thought it was probably just his expression. However, you can actually see a tear on his cheek. I wonder what makes him cry here. They can't be having a conversation since Ariel can't talk in this scene, but perhaps it's something he tells her that makes him get emotional.Disney Duster wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 4:48 am Good catch PatchofBlue! I don't mind the headband either and I agree about Ursula's collar. The fringe detail, or whatever it is, is cool and makes the sleeves feel like part of her body and not like a jacket.
Well, yes, the good thing is that there's lots of stuff to look at. I don't think it's totally bad, but I wish the different elements had been arranged better.Disney Duster wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 4:48 am Good thinking, D82, the new poster is those two things tied together! I don't think Thumper_93 was criticising the sisters being of different races; just saying that if you don't have a problem with one thing, you shouldn't have a problem with the other. And I agree. Yes, it doesn't make sense some characters have accents and some don't when they are all from the same place, but Triton having sisters of different ethnicities or Eric's mother being Black doesn't make sense either. It's just how this kind of casting works. It's like musical numbers; it doesn't make sense everyone dances to the same choreography and knows the same song, but we accept it because it's an established way of telling a story.
Yes, we had seen Eric's castle before in illustration form. As for the underwater palace, maybe they wanted something that blends in with the sorroundings, to explain why the people above haven't discovered it yet. But, we'll see, perhaps they still haven't shown us the real palace.Disney's Divinity wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 9:28 am @D82: It took me a while to even register what I was looking at with the picture of...Ursula's lair??? The online version of the trailer is longer than the one that aired during the Oscars; that's why you didn't see him speak. There are a couple of shots from the moment where Ariel has just become a human in the middle and I think some new footage at the end.
She's actually 52, but I guess the original character was still older, right? Do we know how old was she supposed to be? Perhaps in her 60s?Disney's Divinity wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 1:05 pm The ridiculous hair color trends in this film extends to Ursula, too, trying to imagine a wrinkle-less 40 year-old with white hair.![]()

For what it’s worth: Pat Carroll was 62 in 1989.
