Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
I’m surprised there’s been no outcry from the grievance hucksters that this black little mermaid is pining over a white boy. Prince Eric is definitely still melanin challenged in the live action reboot.
I remember the complaints when the Princess and the Frog came out that Prince Naveen wasn’t “black enough”. “Another slap in the face to black men”, I believe I read at the time.

Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
Well, while there is naturally racism mixed among the backlash aimed at the casting, I'd argue a white person with black or brown hair playing redheaded Ariel would've also got backlash from fans of the original film, so...
Just sayin'. The gall that they might cast skinny young thing Lady Gaga to play Ursula (and Sherie Rene Scott playing her in the musical) was just as bad. Even McCarthy isn't a perfect cast, being younger than the role called for, but she's better than it could've been at least.
Of course, Disney wouldn't have been able to spin the latter into this whole race-mongering discourse to misdirect from how awful the film looks, the exact same way they did when they mutilated Mulan and pretended they were making it more like the original tale (while in reality making it even less like the tale). Every other remake has been raked over the coals for looking varying levels of amateur-ish to straight up garbage, and I'd say a lot of the changes here are worse than many of the others (FastFins, superpowers, humans knowing merfolk exist and having a "feud" with them West Side Story-style --> gag), but because Disney diverted to race as a shield, everyone's supposed to pretend this one's unique and looks like a Best Picture nominee.
It's all very "The Emperor Has No Clothes."

I guess if you outcry your beloved character doesn't look the same in live-action that makes you racist and others like you are to be called racists and not simply "people".
This film is going to be very faithful to the original. Even Beauty and the Beast changed some with Belle inventing a washing machine, Gaston fake-believing Maurice, and Belle knowing about the curse. Yes, I know you don't agree with that Divinity, but I can state my opinion about the remake of my third favorite Disney film as well.

It sounds like the song "For the First Time" has the exact same function, purpose, and placement as "Beyond My Wildest Dreams" written for the Broadway musical. If so, then what's the point of writing a new song instead of reusing that one?

Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
That and it might also be because of its genre and style. Maybe the new song better fits the overall soundtrack than a Broadway tune. Part of Your World is altered to fit a new sound, maybe Beyond My Wildest Dreams wouldn't work with some retooling?
Although some people might overuse the term racism, I think the idea is why you might dislike the changes. If it boils down to your complaint being just about race, then racism might be correct.

Don't forget about the plague, the magical book of teleportation, the bonding over dead mothers and the abusive father.... There is probably more crap they have added and I don't remember now.Disney Duster wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2023 10:34 pm This film is going to be very faithful to the original. Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
ugh... you're reminding me how much I was disappointed from that film. I think I was firs lost the moment I heard the auto-tune in Emma's singing, then my eyes hurt from rolling by the time we got to the magical teleporting book they practically rolled out of their sockets.
I still have faith for this, but reminiscing about what I hated in BatB combined with thoughts about Mulan and most recently with Pinocchio I'm not sure if Disney can help themselves...

Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
That book really reminded me how in Once Upon a Time every episode they pulled convenient magical objects out of their asses that somehow managed to solve their contrived problems all the time.

I thought B&tB was fine. I would've hated B&tB if they cast Kristen Stewart as Belle. That was one of the early rumors, but she turned it down (thank God...). She's not a brunette--or a good actress. I remember thinking they shouldn't even bother making it if they were going to cast her, that would've ruined it coming out the gate.

In the same interview, Halle also talked a bit about how the new version is going to be more modern than the original, why her character has locs and the pressure of working on a remake of a beloved classic:
“What’s beautiful about this version of The Little Mermaid is that it’s a lot more modern,” says Halle. Although the original film featured Part of Your World, a quietly defiant ballad about “Bright young women sick of swimmin’ /Ready to stand”, the overarching message wasn’t exactly what you’d call feminist. Ariel literally relinquishes her voice and drastically changes her body for the man of her dreams.
“When we saw it, when we were younger, she gave up everything for the guy. But I don’t think [that] reflects modern women today. So [now] it’s more about Ariel finding freedom for herself because of this world that she’s obsessed with.” Prince Eric, the handsome shipwrecked human for whom she gives it all up, “is a cherry on top. But it’s not all about him.”
The majority of Halle’s time spent in the tank was for hair tests, as the production team analysed how her locs moved in the water – no wonky wigs, just natural Black hair. Marshall had been keen to incorporate parts of Halle’s identity into the reimagined Ariel throughout the entire production process. Using the locs that she’s worn since she was three was a no-brainer. “As a Black woman, hair is spiritual, especially locs. It was really cool for them to make Ariel a version of me with my locs. I feel like that’s what mermaid hair would be anyway.”
“It’s a little bit of pressure,” Halle admits, although it’s not the fame that fazes her. After all, having spent her formative years in the orbit of the world’s biggest pop star, she’s used to all that. It is, she acknowledges, more the fact that her first two major roles are in adaptations.
“When you’re doing a remake of anything, everyone’s gonna be like: ‘Well, this isn’t how I liked it in the original.’” Despite a heavyweight cast that includes Fantasia, Colman Domingo, H.E.R. and Ciara, she’s particularly anxious about The Color Purple. “That movie has meant so much to us in our community for so long. It was Whoopi Goldberg’s first big thing,” she says of Steven Spielberg’s multi-Oscar-nominated 1985 adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. “I hope people like my versions [of the characters in The Color Purple and The Little Mermaid]. But at the same time, I’ll respect it if they don’t.”

Well, that’s certainly nice of her to “respect” me if I don’t like this unnecessary woke remake of one of my favorite films. What an ego this chick has!
Almost as big an ego as that person playing the legendary Snow White who has nothing but contempt for Walt’s original classic.

Re: The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)
That's one change I expected and I'm happy with. It doesn't seriously alter the story to put a little more emphasis on her own dreams when Ursula is convincing her to sign the contract or for her to be the one to defeat Ursula rather than Eric. Now, the way they do it... Who knows. So far, I have very little confidence in them based on everything else.Prince Eric, the handsome shipwrecked human for whom she gives it all up, “is a cherry on top. But it’s not all about him.”

I don't think Bailey has ego at all, her words don't sound mean-spirited. She feels very different from Zegler to me, Zegler comes across like a drama queen in many of her statements.
