Re: Star Wars: The Mandalorian
Hi everyone. As we’re 1 week out from Season 3 of Star Wars: #TheMandalorian on Disney+, my latest blog post for this week’s up on why #StarWars shouldn’t just abandon #TheSkywalkerSaga to appease cinephiles, as there’s room for stories set in & out of the Saga: https://alsaysall.wordpress.com/2023/02 ... f-stories/.

I have not watched any of The Mandalorian but I find Pedro Pascal very attractive and root for his success in all things.
Yes, I know he wears a mask in this lol. And apparently it’s usually a totally different actor and just his voice lol

Re: Star Wars: The Mandalorian
https://scottmendelson.substack.com/p/s ... open=falseNo two ways about it, this is a terrible hold and suggests there’s little to entice casual Star Wars fans or casual moviegoers with the buzz. Even with decent reviews and decent buzz, this theatrical continuation of a Disney+ episodic is not the proverbial Batman Begins that gets the brand back in good graces with general audiences. Blame the unexpectedly robust competition from youth-skewing horror movies, blame the lack of gotta-see-it-now buzz or just blame audiences doing what Disney trained them to do for much of the 2020s, namely, waiting for it to arrive “for free” on Disney+. Per usual, it’s likely a mix of all three.
A $137.4 million ten-day total now suggests a domestic finish closer to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($172 million in 2017) than Solo ($213 million in 2018). And with $246 million, including a continued 56% domestic/44% overseas split, the odds are not in Mando or Grogu’s favor. If it plays like this going forward, in terms of splits and weekend-to-weekend drops on par with The Last Stand (-67% from a $102 million Fri-Sun/$122 million Fri-Mon debut in 2006), expect around $185 million in North America and $330 million worldwide (or closer to $355 million if it continues not quite to collapse overseas).
That might even be “okay, I guess” for a $165 million movie that should presumably have a healthy post-theatrical lifespan while (ideally) helping to sell Grogu toys. However, neither of those “Well, actually” variables is remotely guaranteed. Besides, Star Wars is supposed to be a franchise that sells toys because it’s super-duper popular in theaters, not one that — like Smurfs or TMNT — can theoretically treat the box office as a glorified loss leader to keep the toy-friendly IP in the public eye. Yes, Shawn Levy’s Starfighter opens next Memorial Day, and ironically, it’s now up to the Ryan Gosling-led adventure to pull a, well, Hail Mary.
I'm not really a Star Wars fan by most metrics, though I did enjoy this movie and was rooting for its success. But this is just depressing.
And I think this summation is mostly on the mark. Disney trying to make their streaming service the lifeblood of their entire company is bleeding them dry.
That, and the fandom has really embraced this idea that Disney has gutted the Star Wars mythology has become a very self-generating, self-fulfilling prophecy.
