Re: Strange World
I agree that the Lasseter Era (2007-whenever he was ousted was a mixed bag). Really the only great things there were TP&TF and Frozen, and Zootopia somewhere behind that. I suppose Raya (another one I love) unfortunately has some of Lasseter's fingerprints on it, although I think the only reason it turned out as good as it was is because he only greenlighted it at most. Overall, aside from the sequel to WIR which Lasseter greenlighted, most things since Lasseter was thrown out has improved. Strange World is probably the weakest, but I didn't think it was a bad film, I just prefer musicals as a genre so Wish will be much more up my alley.
Even PIXAR is more likely to deliver something worth seeing than before, imo, I thought Turning Red was one of the best things they've ever made and Luca was good. They were the first two PIXAR films I've bought before. Elemental looks paint-by-numbers just like Onward, Soul, and the 20 other buddy roadtrips before them, but Elio could be interesting.

Perhaps I missed it but didn't they say that one of the people in the crew was non binary?!

^ The Art of book says Captain Pulk is non -binary (the Venture crew member with pigtails).
And thanks so much for posting the bloopers/deleted scenes, D82! I'm still going through them.

Re: Strange World
Finally saw it. It was meh. Not awful. But meh. I thought the worst offense of it was not letting the kid kiss his boyfriend in the end. And that dancing while making food. Wtf was that? Searcher was pretty darn adorable though.
You could have made the Prince in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs a princess instead and it wouldn't have changed the story, either. You could have made Belle a young man instead of a young woman in Beauty and the Beast and it wouldn't have changed the story either. Don't be heterosexist.

It shows that they're a happy family who can have fun together! My husband and I used to/now just rarely dance in the kitchen (not like full on how the Clades do it) so I really enjoy that scene. And I just love Meridian and Searcher's relationship!Disney Duster wrote:And that dancing while making food. Wtf was that?

At least it did better than the AOC climate change flop. That stinkeroo earned 81 bucks plus change per screen.

Re: Strange World
This one isn't true, imo. Belle's story in regards to Gaston and the village is entirely built around the idea that she's a woman and their misogyny in response to her--that she should get married, her only purpose is to be a breeding machine, she shouldn't read, she shouldn't think, etc. because she's a woman. She is hated in large part for not conforming to gender expectations. I don’t think you could change the gender of quite a few characters without harming the story, much like a character such as Pocahontas' and John Smith's characters are tied up in their race because its the reason for the way other characters react to them. You could have made Belle a young man instead of a young woman in Beauty and the Beast and it wouldn't have changed the story either.

Remember when A Goofy Movie came out and it was about the relationship between a father and his son and no one called it "generational trauma"?

Amy, I disagree that that scene was good in any way except seeing the cutest character shake his butt lol.blackcauldron85 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 27, 2022 5:37 amIt shows that they're a happy family who can have fun together! ^ See, so you got a little enjoyment from it!
Yesterday I was at Target. They still had a few (50% off) Raya toys, + a few Encanto, but 0 Strange World toys.

Re: Strange World
Well, the term has only been popularized recently. While it was originally about the effects the Holocaust had on survivors' children, it was later adopted by Black Studies who made it about the effects slavery and segregation still had on the Black community. Then during the Great Awokening of 2014, it was coopted by the broader liberal movement who applied it to every instance of familial discord or dysfunction. Hollywood followed suit and started introducing it in their films thinking it was being smart, and thoughtful, and profound. Now due to overexposure it has become another tired cliché.
