The film already has a tough female Asian character who is an explorer and also the President, a Black female character who is an experienced pilot and the leader of the family, a Black male character who's gay, a soft, sensitive father who goes against notions of "toxic masculinity"
I think these identities merely exist, they aren't political creations. Anyway, is the mother the leader of the family? The father seems like he's the one with all the screentime, not her. "Soft" is not a word I would use to describe what I've seen of the father character. To me, he comes across more put together and controlled opposite the grandfather who is more easygoing and unrestrained.
Disney always had liberal messaging and themes in their films, but they were integrated in an organic, natural way and they were executed with nuance. And as you've said, those themes stemmed from the plot and the characters. Now, it feels like they first select a message or a cause they wish to promote and then construct the plot and characters to support it. This results in their output feeling more like advocacy than entertainment.
I don't feel this is true at all. What liberal message is Encanto built around from the ground up? That movie's simply about a family with the usual broken dynamics... And how is an Atlantis-looking film set inside a body "built around" a liberal message either? Pocahontas and Hunchback are much more preachy than any of their more recent films to me.
Anyway, I would've liked to see this film the day of, but I probably won't since it's release date is on a weekend (I never see animated films when the families are out to be there *shudder*), so probably somewhere around the 28th-30th area for me.No, wait, it's coming out the 23rd, I was thinking it was the 26th. I might see it the first day then. I don't expect this one to be a big hit because of the boring colors, the similarities to other flops (Atlantis, Treasure Planet), but it looks worth seeing once in theaters. I have more interest for this than I did Zootopia, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Big Hero 6. I didn't see any of those three in theaters, though I ended up liking Zootopia once I finally did see it via a DVD rental.
