It's very likely she is magical too in the remake, just like her sisters are. And we've seen from set photos that there are mermaids who have unnatural hair colors, so this couldn't have been the reason for this change.
Disney's Divinity wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 7:08 pmAnd, anyway, forcing the actress to change her hairstyle to be more "White" would be racist in itself, tbh.
I'm sure that's what Disney believes too and that's why Ariel and the Blue Fairy retained the same hairstyles as the actresses portraying them in their respective remakes.

I know--and that's easily the worst thing about this we've heard so far. At least they didn't make her look bad to go along with that dumb story choice. Other people have the right to their opinion, I have mine and I stand by it, a mermaid is a fantasy creature much like a unicorn or whatever, that's not magical to me the way a witch or the trident are. And anyway, what does being magical have to do with having weird colored hair? Ursula isn't even going to be purple in this, I imagine, even though she is a witch, but magic = random hair colors? Mm'kay.

Wow. That trailer looked great. I'm even more excited for this. In fact, the only thing I didn't like was Halle's "wish I could be-e-e-e-e".

The hair is not brown Sotiris, it is a dull brownish red. And Divinity, unicorns have horns sticking out of their head which is not natural for horses, so a mermaid could have a hair color unnatural for Black humans. I understand - there needs to be a certain level of historical accuracy and believability in fairy tales, and that level is different for everyone. But is the color of a fantasy creature's hair really that hard to imagine being unnatural?!

Anyway, great trailer. I am so looking forward to this. This will make at least a billion.

Finally watched the teaser. (Sorry, there's so much D23 info. to go through, I saved the videos for last since they take me a while to load.) I agree with what you said, Sotiris, I didn't really like how she went high almost on the one line like this is a pop song, even though her voice is pretty. That said, I personally think she got the emotion in the first part we hear ("Out of the sea...."), along with the yearning in her expression.

Overall, that was undeniably an A+ trailer regardless of how the finished product turns out to be, the way everything looked, the score, and so on. Very well-done. I loved the shot of the waves at the beginning in particular, for some reason, but also the sunken ship that Ariel explores.

My husband and I were making fun of that artistic choice all night. Ugh, Halle has such a pretty voice and then that happened.

I love the teaser, it's beautiful, though I wish Hale's "wish I could be" was sung normally, not in that pop style. Other than that, the teaser was beautiful.

Highlights and full recording (part 1/part 2) of the The Little Mermaid presentation. The full "Part of Your World" song was also shown to the audience, but that, of course, wasn't allowed to record.

Here are also some interviews with Halle Bailey and Rob Marshall:

That was so ridiculous. Why didn't anyone correct her? Was she given any vocal direction on how to perform the song at all? Sigh. I also found the scene in question quite static. She just sits on that rock and sings. It pales in comparison to the original. I hope there's more movement during the rest of the song, at least.

Found this on twitter, it's not the full song (there's a complete video) but it's more than what was shown in the teaser, watch it before they remove it:

Thank you, Farerb! It had already been removed when I clicked on it, but I watched it thanks to a link in the comments before that one was also deleted. I've also found a recording on Youtube, which contains almost the full song, but not the visuals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0nZR44IzJg

That's true. And I don't like that, but I guess I just imagined worse things.... I thought she might end up being directed to shout the whole song at the top of her lungs like Cravalho in the live show and Boggess in the musical (although I do give Boggess is a pass since Broadway is the type of place where you want people all the way at the back of the theater to be able to hear you--Sherie Rene Scott is unbearably loud on her songs, too--although she could've dialed it back for the cast recording). Despite the inappropriate pop styling in that last note, at least it does still sound fairly intimate and vulnerable, but we'll see.
I also found the scene in question quite static. She just sits on that rock and sings. It pales in comparison to the original. I hope there's more movement during the rest of the song, at least.
Of course, that goes without question. "Part of YourThat World" is one of the greatest animated scenes there are, imo, not simply the song itself and everything--but the animation itself in that scene is otherworldly beautiful and haunting. I personally thought it looked decent as far as the remakes' standards go. The thing is we didn't see much of the grotto itself actually, so I'm still unsure if it's pretty or not. All we see is the rock she's sitting on and the hole at the top of the grotto that she sees the fireworks through. It looked a little barren, you'd have thought there might be more stuff closer to where Ariel's sitting?

The worst thing about the new logo is how you have "The" above the rest of it... It just looks odd having The and then a long line "LITTLE MERMAID" below it. It would've made more sense to stack the three words one on top of the other or, as the first (better) logo, had "The Little" on top of "Mermaid."

EDIT: Listened to the song, blurry though the audio is. I think she did a decent job, personally. The only part I would criticize is the "I want MOOORE!!" That was louder than necessary. The note's supposed to be held long and high, but not loud. After that, I was scared about the "Ready to stand!" and "Burn!" parts, but she did those well and not loud, imo. So apart from that one thing, I thought she did pretty good! I personally think this was leaked by Disney when people criticized that weird pop way she ended the song to show the whole thing isn't that bad.
Vlad Sicoe wrote: Sat Sep 10, 2022 12:52 pm Beautiful
I agree. When the couple of people clapped after she ended the note "that world aboooooveeeeeee," I felt the same way. I'm so glad she pulled it off. She had the voice, that was never in doubt, I was just scared Miranda would end steering her wrong and Menken would be more passive to whatever he wanted.

Don't get me wrong, that's not to say it matches the original in brilliance, but it's as good as I would've *ever* expected for one of the remakes, that's for sure. Probably one of the best versions of it out there besides the original, definitely. She's got Boggess' and Cravalho's versions beat, for sure. I do love Boggess and she does lot of parts of the songs great, but the very end of POYW is just so loud, I don't like that. It just sucks that this audio will be taken down and we'll have to wait a whole year before the soundtrack is available because this movie is taking forevah.

I wasn't able to watch the leaked video. All the links that were posted have been deleted, but I managed to listen to the song in low quality from the link D82 shared. Thankfully, Halle did a decent job overall. I think "decent" is as good as it can get with these remakes. I didn't like how she sang the line "the shore up above" and hated the ridiculous way she did "wish I could be", but other than that it's fine. It gives me hope this remake won't be a complete disaster.

For anyone who happened to catch the video, what did you think of the visuals?

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am BLOWN AWAY by Halle's "Part of Your World"!!! DAAAAAAMN!!! I decided to listen to the full thing only because Disney's Divinity had talked about it so, and thank you D82 for the link to the last half of the song with some visuals (only the second link with the last half of the song worked for me)! I have to say, now, hearing the whole song, I do not mind the "be-e-e-e-", it fits with the way she sang the rest, and, by God, her version is just...it's amazing! The visuals are also so wonderfully choreographed and animated, and, well...I am enchanted! I have been taken back to when I was a kid again and felt wonder and magic! And, Halle really acts the "wanderin' free, wish I could be" so damn well along with singing it well! Oh the music, the CGI animation, the singing, the acting, it is so so magical and I cannot wait for this movie. I don't think it's gonna suck guys, I think that Halle's strong acting and singing and the visuals are gonna make this a wonderful movie. I hope to God I am right. Oh, and Ariel has her hip fins, my favorite part of her mermaid tail! Yay!

:o :D

I can't find it, but I think someone here said that the "pop runs" she sings aren't so bad in context of the song...the more I hear it, I'm getting used to how her version is and it's good. I agree that it could have been so much worse. Do you think Lin or Halle or someone else chose the vocal arrangement, with the "pop runs?".
