Wow, I guess that means being gay is totally cool everywhere now. Thanks for the memo. World peace is here and I didn’t even realize. Thanks!

Patrick, you implied that every gay person everywhere was suffering. I just wanted to say I’m gay and not suffering. Or more accurately, not suffering for being gay.

No, that’s not what I implied. But the fact that a large majority of the LGBTQ community in the world is being persecuted or discriminated against is an undeniable fact.

Im gay and not suffering, but staying silent is being complicit. This law is bizar. People need to speak up.

I'm not surprised to hear the corporation is blocking attempts to create LGBT characters in their films. The world is already there, but they don't want to deal with homophobes boycotting and all that stuff. It's just hilarious when they have a so-called diversity initiative where it concerns race, to the point they wouldn't make a film if it didn't have a non-White protagonist, but at the same time deliberately blocking the possibility of LGBT characters.

@PatrickvD: I agree. Growing up in a world where you don't exist in the films you're watching as a child at all can't help but cause suffering to the LGBT community--and that's not even getting into the previous support the company was throwing Florida's way to help make LGBT children's lives harder in school as if it wouldn't be bad enough already. Being a LGBT child in the South already puts you in a vulnerable position when you're too young to have legal authority to make decisions to protect yourself from families who the vast majority of the time will not be supportive of you and who will make your daily life hell.

I'm with you guys, LGBTQ people are suffering. Not all of them, and not all to such extremes, but still, most of us are suffering a little. There's still so many people who don't accept us.

Does Disney really not allow white protagonists in their movies anymore officially? Like, is there proof they said they would not allow white protagonists in their movies anymore?

This. There are so, so many LGBTI+ people actually suffering under these new conditions (or, elsewhere in the world, existing conditions). It's a shared suffering of the community and even if you don't feel the experience yourself, saying 'gay people suffer' is, unfortunately, absolutely correct.
I'm gay and not personally suffering. I am worried, emotional and, frankly, scared for many of my community members around the world. I carry that with me where-ever I go. That's not a complaint - not thinking about these people would be a great disservice.

The time for Disney to take a stand may have come sooner than I'd thought. I hope they eventually choose the right thing.

Also, Alen Menken remains a legend.

They should've clarified, "racial diversity only." Protagonists may not be the right word, but, yes, I'd be surprised if WDAS has a White protagonist (from a movie that isn't a sequel) over the next decade. And yet somehow they'll still find a way not to make another original film with a majority-Black cast despite all that though.

Alan Menken spoke out about the Don't Say Gay bill on social media and posted the following article referencing Howard Ashman. It's nice to see prominent names in the Disney sphere coming out publicly and putting pressure on the company to change their stance. What would the Walt Disney Company be, if it weren't for the creative contributions of LGBT individuals? They should put their money where there mouth is.
I strongly oppose the #DontSayGay bill in Florida. I hope my friends and colleagues within the Disney family will join me in saying so publicly.

The company has disrespected Menken himself, Ashman's partner, for years, so I'd be surprised if that will affect them much. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that some of the disdain with which Menken was treated 2010 onwards by Lasseter and the PIXAR fratbros was tied to the fact his partnership with a gay man was what made him a Disney staple (after all, look how women like Brenda Chapman were treated then). Despite LGBT being pretty prominent in Broadway, I notice none of the other composers they've brought on since are LGBT? Come to think of it, they were pretty disrespectful to Elton John, too, from what I remember about Gnomeo & Juliet and the TLK remake.

It's a shame there's no way Disney could helicopter WDW to another state.  Florida definitely does not deserve the money tourism to WDW brings to the state.

I agree that it was the fratboy gang of Lasseter and his ‘story trust’ (aka group of straight white men giving each other compliments) that created a culture that was hostile to gays, women and people of color. So while the world was moving forward, WDAS and Pixar were moving backwards behind the scenes. All the shout outs to the community during this time were just for show.

I have no doubt Lasseter was jealous of Ashman and the enormous legacy he left behind. You see this a lot, straight people trying to erase/ gloss over the sexuality of history’s greatest. Lasseter needed a cult of personality around him to make his mark. Ashman remained fully in the background.

While post-Lasseter Disney and Pixar are a much more diverse place it’s time for the upper layer of the company to get with the times as well. What’s the ole saying, ‘no taxation without representation’?

Put your money where your mouth is, Bob. Time’s up.

1. The documentary features the Visual FX Supervisor and her wife and their babies and it also showed a kiss between them, and it also mentioned when she was a kid, she had a crush on an older young lady before she knew she was gay, and the little trinket she made (a clothespin). So even though it's not in the animated film itself, the making of film does have some representation.
I didn't mention that her crush story was told in drawings.
And the film itself has a possible bisexual character (Miriam).

There's a tiny part at a party where she and another girl kind of dance for a moment and her friends kind of cheer her on. And I meant PRIYA, not MIRIAM! Sorry.

I believe this is the first time Disney has marketed Disney Princess products expressly to the LGBT community.
