Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (Live-Action)

I'm sure it's not the first example of such, but I do blame The Lego Movie for this recent obsession with metaverses and IP crossing. And every time we get a new version of this, be it Ralph Breaks the Internet, Space Jam: A New Legacy, and now this, that movie's looking a little worse to me.

And you're right, the cel-shaded CG looks awful. I'd honestly much rather the characters stay in more traditional CG.

What struck me most about the trailer is that it was just really chaotic. I'm not extremely outraged, but watching the trailer honestly felt like a weird dream where all these pop culture references come crashing together in a completely surreal and incohesive way. I also find the animation a bit stiff; it's kinda ironic they reference uncanny CG animation in one scene (bad motion capture, Cats), when the 2D animated Chip looks a bit off. Maybe it'll make more sense as a complete film, but something tells me it's not exactly going to be a masterpiece.

I did like the cameo from Roger Rabbit though (and the Three Little Pigs too!).

I don't know what to think. I agree- I also liked Roger's and the Pigs' cameos and I agree that Chip looks off and their voices sound off. The original show is my favorite cartoon ever so I wish it was done more justice than this movie. They could have created an original film based on new "retro" characters, and I think it would be a better decision than this. I do like a lot of the talent they got for this but I don't know if this was the way to go. I'll probably still watch...it's like a trainwreck- you can't look away...

I grew up watching and loving (and still loving) the meta-Spielberg cartoons like "Animaniacs" and "Tiny Toon Adventures", so I've always enjoyed meta humour. Hence this movie seems right up my alley, as it's definitely going for "Animaniacs"-style humour. A commentary on the evolution of animation over the last thirty years has a lot of potential to be really funny and biting. I often enjoy those times when Disney is willing to have fun with their own image and iconography, like the "Lilo & Stitch" teasers where he invades the other movies or "Runaway Brain" or the new Paul Rudish Mickey Mouse cartoons. So I'm very interested in the direction they're going with this.

For those who think animated characters should always remain in character in the same situation, I want to point out that there would be no Rescue Rangers because the guys would be too busy driving Donald Duck crazy. (And Mickey would still be stuck on the steamboat.)

Quick reaction:

Finally an IP-driven film that seems to have something interesting to say, though at this stage there's no telling if it's actually good or crap.

Officially intrigued! And I never watched the original show, so no nostalgia factor for me.

BUT

Why did they opt for cel-shaded CG!!?? The concept of a 2D character interacting with a CGI character and acknowledging the graphic differences has tremendous potential. The cel-shaded CG completely diminishes the intended contrast and effect.

I would have felt the same even if the cel-shaded CG looked awesome, as in the (trailers) of the Tom and Jerry movie released last year.

This movie doesn't look like it was made on a zero budget, and in the absence of Disney+, I am sure this would have been a theatrical release. I am sure they could have hired Ken Duncan or Sergio Pablos to contribute.

In the end I feel frustrated. In that trailer I see a very unique and potentially interesting film that is let down due to its animation, which is difficult to brush aside because the movie actually TALKS ABOUT IT and it is an integral ingredient and not just a detail.

I am truly torn.

Well, my reaction to the trailer is just like everyone elses: It`s absolutely meh! The meta-angle doesn`t work at all, as it makes the show look like it was a huge sensation when it wasn`t (as Chip and Dale weren`t exactly unknown before the show). Even the Roger Rabbit-joke feels superfluous and unnecessary. The animation (both the CGI and Hand Drawn) is stiff and uneappeling and the CGI design on Dale is lackluster. The non-Disney cameos are also superfluous, as they have absolutely nothing to do with the premise whatsoever. It seems as it tries to emulate the meta-aspect of Space Jam A New Legacy and failing miserably.

It's actually really sad the nosedive quality has taken in all divisions of the company. Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, Disney finds a way.

I don't think WDAS or even PIXAR has seen a nosedive in quality. I think they've been better than they have in the past these last few years--or, rather, their recent 3D films are much better than their early 3D films, imo. I'd take Raya and Encanto over the vast majority of the 2010's or the 2000's, tbh. Disney's live-action films the past thirty years have always been garbage. The few that aren't (like POTC) were always an exception.

I don't think you can limit low-quality live-action Disney films to the last thirty years. I've been watching the movies on Disney+ in chronological order and that gave me a lesson in how much the studio struggled in the '70s after Walt died. I sat through some dire films from that period. I would take even the weakest Disney remake any day over the boredom I felt watching things like "The Biscuit Eater" and "The Castaway Cowboy." Although they did have a couple of worthwhile films, like "Escape to Witch Mountain" and "Treasure of Matecumbe", Disney wasn't in a great place after Walt's death and before the '80s.

Aside from maybe when Walt was in charge, the live-action movie part of Walt Disney Pictures has never been as consistent as the animation department. Even during the '90s, which I am nostalgic towards, you had movies like "Mr. Magoo" and "My Favourite Martian" alongside the occasional gem like "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey" and "The Santa Clause." I don't think Disney has produced a movie as close to as bad as "Mr. Magoo" in the last ten years.

Well, Pluto as the villain is not far out of reach. After all, he`s one of their antagonists in various of their shorts. But for some reason I have a bad feeling about how far they`ll take it.

I think the villain being Pluto is absolutely ridiculous. Donald Duck would have made more sense. But it gets worse. The execution is beyond offensive and cringeworthy.
