Jim Hill talked about the canceled Rose Red movie on his podcast.
Jim Hill wrote:A Rose Red script that Disney optioned back in March 2016 basically abandons all the elements of the original Brothers Grimm story except for the fact Snow White had a sister named Rose Red. The new take on this tale starts literally after Snow Whites has bitten the poisoned apple and fallen into a death-like sleep. Grumpy is the one who realizes it's a powerful curse that the dwarfs will need help to break. So, Grumpy leaves the other six dwarfs behind to guard the princess in her glass coffin as he goes off to find Rose Red, Snow White's sister. Together, Rose Red and Grumpy go off on this epic quest in an effort to find a cure for the curse.

I got to see coverage for this script back in 2016. For those of you who down't know what coverage is, it's typically a one- or two-page synopsis. The idea is you take a 120-, 150-page script and you break it down to a description of the story. What's also usually included is suggested casting, so the studio knows how to pursue. The person who put together the coverage for the studio suggested Emilia Clarke for Rose Red and Peter Dinklage for the role of Grumpy. The original script for Rose Red was written by Justin Merz. Evan Daugherty then reworked that script. Disney liked this version.

I figured that's what they had planned (to leave any details about Rose Red from the fairy tales behind). It sounds more like something that would suit a sequel to their live-action film--that's if it (miraculously) doesn't bomb the way Mulan did because they're changing beyond recognizing.

They could even repeat the Frozen-esque sisters / Glinda and Elphaba dynamic, considering they've repeated it several times now, with Snow White and Rose Red. Perhaps even connect Rose Red to Alice in Wonderland (I'm thinking of the Queen's red roses) or Sleeping Beauty (I'm thinking of Maleficent describing Aurora as having "lips the color the rose" and her hidden identity being Briar Rose). This would all be unrelated to the Disney film; sort of similar to the Snow White and the Hunstman sequel that made the Evil Queen and the Snow Queen sisters. I always did feel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil imitated that film's sequel to a degree with the showdown between Jolie and Pfeiffer being the conceit of the film. They could do a similar thing, except with the protagonists here rather than the villains.

I could see Emilia Clarke in a fellow princess-type character beside Snow White. Of course, it's hard to envision her and Rachel Zegler playing off one another. Perhaps this script may be the reason for Dinklage's comments. They may have reached out to him about such a project in the past and his reaction was, "They want me to play Grumpy the dwarf?" and was vaguely offended? I'm thinking of how Bea Arthur's people were reached out about playing Ursula and they thought she would be offended Disney were thinking of her to play a witch. He might've been holding it in for a while, only to then be asked about the new SW film Disney is making in passing bringing it out. I remember once saying I think he would be a good pick for The Little Mermaid to fill Grimsby's role as advisor to Eric since they were already going outside the box with Awkwafina as Scuttle. They could've given the character a little more prominence, so that Dinklage would be to Eric what Nonso Anozie is to Kit Harrington's Prince in the live-action Cinderella remake. Those minor roles in the original films aren't ones I mind them playing around with.

Where did you get Harrington for Cinderella's Prince Kit?
