I'm so happy you loved it!unprincess wrote:OMG guys guys I LOVED THIS MOVIE!
just curious what were all your favorite characters? Mine were:
Camilo-so cute, fun and I love his power... he's such a theater kid, lol!
Bruno- OMG this was such an unexpected surprise, just loved the guy, he was heartbreaking!
Pepa- I LOVED her, she's so fun and expressive!
Dolores-just cute!(everyone's so cute in this movie gaaaah)
Isabela-I loved that they let her be slightly antagonistic and bitchy, I figured theyd just make her nice b/c of reluctance to show any female characters in a negative light.
Antonio- just adorable with all those lovely animals...
young Alma and Pedro- heartbreaking, also really loved their design
and then everybody else!
Mirabel is my most favorite. Love, love her. I really like Delores, and Luisa, and Antonio, and Mirabel's parents, and Isabela later on, and I like Bruno, and Pepa...I don't dislike any character, really.

Re: Encanto
Lots of YouTube vlogs on how Encanto is underperforming at the box office. Many are calling it a flop, but not quite as bad a bomb as is West Side Story. So sad...
Re: Encanto
Yep, as we can see here, Encanto is the biggest animated flop of 2021
I haven't seen it yet, waiting til X-Mas Eve.

Re: Encanto
Noooo! I was hoping it was at least doing better than Raya. Also wouldn't it still be affected by Covid especially with Omicrom now? And also the fact a lot of people now know they can just wait a month and watch it on Disney+ ? I just think Box Office these days cant be measured by old metrics, things are just too different now.
EDIT: Disneyera, you posted right before I was about to post, oh I hope that chart is accurate!
I spent a week looking for Camilo fan art on tumblr right before I saw the film and kept stumbling onto a lot of Bruno fan art and fans saying he was their favorite character and thinking, wow he must have a heck of a story line. Then I watched the film and I got it, he's just so sad(that FREAKIN PLATE!) you just want to hug him and give him some soup.
Camilo had a lot of fan art too but I already had a feeling he would be popular. I hate how the more I think Im going to really love a movie the harder it is for me to keep away from spoilers. The only reason I looked for Cam fan art before I watched the film was b/c I didn't think there was gonna be so much of it that first week of release(and there really wasn't.) And yet at one point I stumbled onto a blog post on my dash who had loaded a very dark camrip of Cam's scenes. Since they were at first scenes already shown in the trailers and promos I kept watching but it ended up being almost every scene he had in the film including his whole sequence from WDTAB. By the time I realized it, it was too late I just sat there like a dope taking it all in.

Re: Encanto
It's actually at $152-153, according to The Numbers/BoxOffice Mojo. So international numbers must be adjusting. It needs just $28 million more domestic to hit the Centry Mark!

Re: Encanto
How do we know if it's flopping? I feel like the only way is to compare it to other animated films being released at the same time (since March for Raya was a much different time than now even)--and fellow original animated films, not sequels. What other animated films are out right now or about to be released in the November-December area? That list is curious. I thought Raya was the lowest animated film in the U.S., how did it end up #3 worldwide?

Re: Encanto
According to BoxOffice Mojo, Raya's domestic run was $54.7million. Other animated releases were about the same: Boss Baby 2 did $57.3, Addams Family 2 did $56.4, Paw Patrol did $40.1, Demon Slayer MT, $47.7, Ron's Gon Wrong did $22.6 & Spirit Untamed did $17.6. 2020's Thanksgiving release of The Croods 2 the highest domestic grosser post Covid at $58.5million.
Both BoxOffice Mojo & The Numbers has Raya at $54.7 Domestic, but The Numbers has Raya's International gross at $62millon, while BoxOffice Mojo has it at $75millon.
If your going by The Numbers: Raya did just under $117million total.
If your going by BoxOffice Mojo: Raya did $130million total.

I also think it doesn't make sense to use the old metrics when discussing box-office gross. And family films are absolutely still being affected.unprincess wrote:Noooo! In 2019, I count eleven family films that made more than $200 million worldwide. Since March 2020, only two (Cruella and The Croods: A New Age) have crossed that mark. That Encanto is the highest-grossing animated film at the domestic box-office during the pandemic should be something Disney will be proud of. I don't know if it will reach $100 million, but even if it doesn't reach that number, it will be close. It's still $75 million away from passing The Croods: A New Age as the highest-grossing animated family film worldwide during the pandemic, so I'm curiously watching to see if it will get there. There is a chance. Sing 2 will be opening next week, so it will be interesting to see what grosses that one gets to.

I always wish for an audio commentary, but actually those extras don't sound bad. As for the cover, I thought it was exactly the same as one of the posters, but now I've noticed it's not, although the background and all the poses are recycled.Farerb wrote:Press release

Here's the Spanish steelbook and the runtime of the bonus features. I'm surprised the featurette about the song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is so long. I wonder if there's a typo there.

I wonder if the standard cover will be hideous for this one the way it was for Raya? The 4K cover looks really nice--a much better arrangement than the poster it imitated, I think. Of course, even if the standard cover does turn out to be horrid, I won't be getting this in person at a store for me to be able to put one of the 4K covers on top of it.
I'll be getting this one via DMC whenever I do, so I won't have that option.

Re: Encanto
The soundtrack came yesterday. "Waiting on a Miracle" has grown a little on me despite the voice actress detracting from it; I almost laugh thinking about all the complaints about the "rawness" of Cravalho in Moana now. Who knew someone worse would come along in the next film Miranda would be involved with. I'm looking forward to covers of "WoaM"--that song could be elevated so easily. Quite different from the days of Jodi Benson or Judy Kuhn, where no other version can ever really compare to the original vocals. "What Else Can I Do?" just doesn't work for me at all. I swear, it sounds like a track on a Vanessa Hudgens album or something.
Oh, and the Target version came with a poster and it's the image being used for the 4K release farerb posted above. So even if the standard cover ends up being hideous like with Raya, at least I have the 4K's image in one form.

Re: Encanto
^I liked her voice but I know what you mean about it sounding raw and unprofessional, I kinda cringe during that part in Family Madrigal at the end when she's doing that fast rap recap of her family members, poor girl must have needed an oxygen tank after that.
Although at the same time it does help make them(Mirabel and Moana) sound more their age, like its a regular teenage girl singing and not some classically trained Broadway singer.
I think the problem is that with them now insisting that the voices they cast match the ethnicity/race of the characters they are forced to pick from a smaller pool of vocal talent. Its not just that the voice actors must be Hispanic they have to specifically be Colombian as well. Speaking of the voices John Leguizamo isn't Colombian is he? Isn't he Puerto Rican?
so saw the film a 2nd time (SPOILERS BELOW)
Liked the songs more the 2nd time around , as I figured I would. I still think Luisa's song goes on too long and Isa's song, its not that its too long but that it feels.... poorly structured? Poorly thought out? Like, I wish there had been more time spent on the Isa/Mira rivalry. Considering how important that particular relationship ends up being to getting towards the film's resolution, it felt like a barely there "C" plot. Like maybe Isa's number should have happened earlier in the film, I dunno, I feel like it comes on too late in the story...Isa sings about how she always has to be perfect, the sisters have their big blow up and then their make up hug, all in the same number. Felt rushed. Bruno's reintroduction to the rest of the family at the end felt rushed too. What happened to Pepa's utter rage at the mere sound of his name? She especially should have been more hesitant about him coming back.
okay, can we talk about....Hercules? This bugged the HELL out of me. We knew about the familiar looking cerberus from the trailers but whoa Herc shows up too! And yet its not the 2d DISNEY Herc? WTF? Wouldn't this have been the perfect chance to give the 1997's 2d Herc a cameo easter egg? You know, those things Disney loves to do A LOT? I cant help but feel that this may have been originally planned, considering they could have just used other examples of strong legendary Greek heroes, but they must have balked at the last minute for some reason and I would love to know why???
I like all the kooky quirks Bruno has like the wood knocking and some fans already headcanon him as having OCD.
Tumblr/Twitter has gone insane with this film. Apparently to a lot of fans there ALL the characters are some form of gay, lesbian or something in between. Even the obviously straight married characters.
I am so looking forward to that blu-ray bonus on WDTAB. I usually dont have time to watch bonuses these days due to lack of time but that's one I really want to make some time to watch b/c I thought that whole sequence was a-may-zing, and I want to see how they pulled off all that live action dance choreography into the sequence. Also hope it includes some storyboards. I haven't had a chance to get the art book yet(I'm waiting for the price to go down on Amazon) but I'm hoping there are storyboards for it there too.

I pre-ordered the art book months ago and still have not received it. (Not from Amazon though.)(edit- I just checked my email and I got a shipping notification 2 days ago! Woohoo!)

According to The Numbers, Encanto needs $15.6 million domestic to hit the Century Mark. And $22 million more Worldwide to hit $200 million. Even with the Disney+ release Thursday, I still believe it will hit those marks through New Year's.

Random thought: Near the end of "We Don't Talk About Bruno," when Camilo says, "Isabela, your boyfriend's here" and everyone shouts "Time for dinner!" something about that part of the song reminds me of The Proud Family, I don't know why.
