Re: Make Mine Music Discussion
This would have been disappointing on its own, but it's made all the more infuriating when we have multiple reports of Disney Movie Club representatives strongly implying (and others outright confirming) that all ten segments of the film would be present. With that in mind, the optimistic approach is to hope that this release was intended to be uncut, an edited master was used by mistake, and a replacement program can be launched. (There's precedent for this, thankfully.) Of course, it's just as likely the release was always intended to be cut and edited, and the customer service reps at DMC stating otherwise was just a case of one branch of the company not properly communicating with another. (There's precedent for this as well, unfortunately.)
Until it's resolved, I won't be buying Make Mine Music, which joins Sword in the Stone on my list of titles I refuse to purchase until we get new blu-rays with proper restorations.
In other news, Melody Time's blu-ray seems to be uncut and unedited, right? That's a win!

I didn't know Disney Movie Club representatives had said that. There's still hope then if what happened is the first thing you mentioned. Let's hope it's that.

Re: Make Mine Music Discussion
I just received both discs in the mail. Yes, Pecos Bill is unedited!!! The back of the Melody Time case says, "Content Advisory-- Stories Matter-- http://www.disney.com/storiesmatter-- This program includes negative depictions or mistreatment of people or cultures. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future.-- Contains tobacco depictions"
Make Mine Music's case says, "Content Advisory--Contains tobacco depictions"

Will do!Farerb wrote:Jules - if you find that Australian rip please let me know.
Though, as I'm sure you already know, somebody has posted the entire film uncut on The Internet Archive.

Due the low file size there appears to be some artifacting, but not so much that it destroys the image. Certainly it looks stronger and healthier than the DVD - so it is most certainly an improvement over that!
I've already downloaded it and plan to try it out on my home theatre setup later. (I won't be watching the movie - just testing it.)
For the rest of you: https://archive.org/details/make-mine-m ... 46-720p-hd
Make sure to download the MKV file for the best quality!
Re Melody Time, it has been revealed that the Dolby Digital mono track on the disc is of an abysmal bit rate. I suspect it is the same source used for the Once Upon a Wintertime segment in the Olaf's Frozen Adventure Blu-ray release, which sounded awful.

Re: Make Mine Music Discussion
Thank you, Jules.
Yes I was aware of that earlier this day. I guess I won't have to buy the Blu-ray to get a superior version.
Regarding Once Upon a Wintertime - as far as I know Disney doesn't restore shorts twice just because they appear in different places so it makes sense it's the same as in the Olaf Blu-ray. As far as I know it's the same case with The Sorcerer's Apprentice in both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000.

Oh, dear. I hate to hear about the low bitrate on Melody Time's audio. Has anyone listened to the disc itself and confirmed the audio sounds as bad as feared? Bad enough to not purchase?
I haven't ordered the blu-ray yet but I'll happily save my money if that disc is problematic as well.

Re: Make Mine Music Discussion
However, this is not a case of an audio restoration error. It seems more like carelessness. I am certain Disney have a perfectly adequate audio master they can use - they may have just grabbed the first thing that was available.Farerb wrote:Regarding Once Upon a Wintertime - as far as I know Disney doesn't restore shorts twice just because they appear in different places so it makes sense it's the same as in the Olaf Blu-ray. Seriously, if they had simply recycled the Dolby track from 20-year-old DVD, that would have been ok. I think in Region 1 territory, discs were Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono, and Region 2 discs had a Dolby Digital 5.1 remix. I have the latter. I expect it is repurposed from the same audio source as the USA disc, and it sounds just fine!
Apparently the bit rate is 96 kbps!Pasta67 wrote:Oh, dear. I hate to hear about the low bitrate on Melody Time's audio. Has anyone listened to the disc itself and confirmed the audio sounds as bad as feared? Bad enough to not purchase?
I've asked people on their opinion on the disc's audio on that site, but nobody has replied yet.
Honestly, this deserves as much complaints as Make Mine Music! What use is the high definition image if the audio hurts your ears? (And yes, at that bit rate, it will sound like garbage and I will only be tolerable at low volume, or muted!)

I've watched only the Pecos Bill section so far, and while it sounded fine to me, I'm not an audiophile and we just have a plain sound bar... So I don't know how it would hold up for someone knowledgeable about audio...

Re: Make Mine Music Discussion
I know what it would sound like, but it is rather difficult to explain in words. Have you ever listened to a low quality MP3? We're talking an MP3 file with a similarly low bit rate here. The Melody Time Blu-ray should exhibit similar problems.blackcauldron85 wrote:I've watched only the Pecos Bill section so far, and while it sounded fine to me, I'm not an audiophile and we just have a plain sound bar... Outrageous that the original and only DVD release of the film that came out 21 years ago (!!) has Dolby Digital 2.0 audio (dual mono) at 192 kbps, but the new and long-overdue Blu-ray has an unheard-of 96 kbps Dolby Digital 1.0 track ...
I mean, one would actually expect lossless sound on Blu-ray either as PCM, DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD. Simply including a lossy Dolby track is bad enough, but to include an atrociously bad lossy Dolby track!!??
I am aghast at the level of carelessness and outright apathy that plagues Disney releases. Honestly, in some ways this is angering me more than Make Mine Music's censorship, because in the latter's case quite a few signs are pointing to the fact that the censorship on the new Blu-ray was intentional and not an error.
However, in Melody Time's case, this is most certainly an error and completely and utterly inexcusable. More so since Melody Time is a musical film and will be hurt even more by the quality loss than a non-musically oriented film of the same era.
Unfortunately, I think most people aren't realising the travesty here and are content with their Melody Time Blu-rays. I really hope this story picks up steam so that Disney may issue disc replacements, and start selling a corrected release of the film.

I really wish I didn't like these films so I wouldn't care so much about their presentation on home video.
Unfortunately I love them.

Re: Make Mine Music Discussion
Well, darn. I would have loved to support the release of Melody Time at least, but if the audio on the blu-ray is lower quality than the audio I'd get if I simply played the movie on Disney Plus, then there's no reason to buy it. It's a shame. I was so looking forward to these.
My Animated Classics collection on home video remains incomplete.

Re: Make Mine Music Discussion
NEWS!
It's not good.
Make Mine Music's censorship was deliberate, and for this reason Disney has no intention of correcting the problem.

Not much being said about Melody Time's audio issue, but I think we can push for that to be fixed. That is most certainly an error.

Now they're making it explicit in their marketing there are only 9 segments in the Make Mine Music Blu-ray.

Re: Make Mine Music Discussion
I only just noticed that the Fun and Fancy Free / Adventures of Ichabod Blu-ray from some years ago is no longer available on Disney Movie Club... Thankfully, Ichabod is still available--I just don't get why it would go out, especially since F&FF wasn't available any other way. They should just release it solo like Melody Time and Make Mine Music then.
I know this would never happen, but they should just release the five films together in one package as The Package Films. If Disney ever brought the Disney Treasures sets back, they could make it one of those.
