Hilariously Awful "Disney" Art in Public (shield your kids!)

Post by Jules »

I really could have sworn we already had a thread for this sort of detritus. :P Alas, the trusty Search Function came up empty-handed. Hence, I must now pollute DVDizzy with questionable content, but hopefully it will serve some purpose. :frog:

Long story short ... I was in the national hospital a few days ago, and entered a ward that must have been a children's ward in the past, though it no longer is. Nevertheless, the walls are covered in paintings of popular cartoon characters.

I am certain kids appreciate this stuff in an otherwise clinical hospital setting, but allow me to be a little mean. They tend to be godawful, and a regular source of amusement for me, lol.

Anyway, in this particular ward there was this lovely fresco of the Tangled characters - a reproduction of the USA theatrical poster.

It made me giggle.

Badly.

I find such pieces oddly fascinating. I wonder why. Then again, I recall that when Cartoon Brew was still fun, Jerry Beck had a regular feature in which he'd showcase really funny, poor renditions of famous animated characters on unofficial murals (like this), shop windows, signage, etc. I guess they work on two levels, fulfilling their intended objective and beyond. :) They may be bad, but I am certain whoever makes these (probably voluntarily) puts a lot of love into them, and I guess that is what counts.

And yes! Some unscrupulous vandal gave Rapunzel a friggin' moustache!!

Anyway, I hope this made somebody smile. I've been practically extinct from this forum for the last four months or so. I don't expect to post regularly any time soon, but I guess this'll have to do for now. :P I have a few more images I can share, which I think are quite a bit funnier than this.

Disney has been known to make daycare centers and I think hospitals get rid of their homemade Disney murals, so I wonder if this will be on Disney's radar now. Maximus looks pretty good! Punzie doesn't look like herself, but her face isn't bad (that mustache, though).

I heard of that case in the USA!! It was quite some time ago, though.

Honestly, it would be incredibly bad press for Disney to target a hospital on a tiny island country on the other side of the world just because I posted two pics on the internet revealing the (gasp!) blatant copyright infringement. The internet would slow roast the Walt Disney Co. on a spit. (And I would become persona non grata in my own country for unwittingly inviting in the wrath of the Evil Empire. :P )

I actually think the brush work on this mural is passable. What bothers me is the underlying drawing, which is poorly structured. That is why the faces look wonky. Admittedly it is not easy to draw at a large scale, and I suspect whoever made this did not have the luxury of time on his/her side to ensure the piece could be as good as it needed to be.

I personally know a man who does these projects, and he's awesome. He's an older guy, and he is so skilled that when big budget Hollywood productions come to my country he is regularly hired as part of the crew, constructing and painting sets, as well as other things.

Pssst! On the opposite wall there was a Frozen mural, but both Elsa and Anna were distinctly lacking any form of facial hair. Boring. :P

Ooh, did you take a photo of the Frozen wall?! Did they look wonky?

 No, I didn't. But yes, they looked wonky too - maybe even wonkier. I guess it was Punzie's moustache that motivated me to take that earlier snap.

I do have these, however. :mischief:

No idea who Kevin might be, but - God bless his soul - these absolutely made my day when I saw them. These pics are a lot older than the ones above, though, dating back to 2013. This is the first time I have shared them with anyone.

And, those beauties were located in ... an old people's home! Of all places! rotfl I can just imagine any intellectual or highly educated old people living there muttering angrily to themselves, "Do the directors of this place think we are retarded just because we're old!? Wankers!"

I think my favourite aspect of these two is absolute disregard for the rules of perspective. In fact, there are multiple perspectives at the same time, sometimes on a single object.

What I find interesting here is that unlike most other pieces, wherein the artists simply copy existing character promotional clipart, Kevin decided to draw the characters his way. These are essentially original drawings of existing characters.

And that mouse artist character certainly seems to be wholly original. He's just painting a Mrs Potts who seems to have a thing for big-booty Lumiere, judging by her increased blood pressure and sultry look. Actually, I'm gonna assume she had a fling with Lumiere and that those two ugly teacups are none other than Chip's illegitimate step brothers. ("Maman! Où est mon père?") :P

No idea if these are still hanging in 2021.

EDIT: To me Goofy's tools look like they belong to a carpenter rather than a cobbler.

 Oh boy. The mouse does kind of resemble Bernard's cousin. Lumiere isn't awful, but Mrs. Potts and Chip 1 & 2 are scary.
