Manjari Makijany will direct the film. Manjari Makijany is an Indian director, she recently wrapped her directorial debut, ‘Desert Dolphin’ which is a sports drama that is a coming-of-age story of a rural skater girl inspired by true events. Carley Steiner, Céline Geiger and Josh A. Cagan will write the screenplay for the film. Zanne Devine will executive produce the film, who recently executive produced another upcoming Disney+ original film ‘Secret Society of Second Born Royals’.
The plot will follow a teenager who, following the death of her mother, finds her life revolving around helping at her family’s restaurant, but when she falls for an aspiring DJ, he re-awakens her passion for music, and she begins to realize that may be where her priorities lie. It is currently unknown when production will begin.

Oof, just found out this is the lowest rated Disney Channel Original Movie in history. I really hope they don't blame that on any of the actors in it, or the fact that it centers on Indian-Americans. It was a pretty fun movie and the lead did a good job imo.
I love that there is more South Asian representation in media nowadays. The last Disney Channel movie I can think of that had a main Indian-American character was Lemonade Mouth from 2011 (the character was Mo, played by Naomi Scott). Mo was more of a supporting character though. I believe this is the first Disney Channel movie to have an actual Indian-American main character. That's pretty cool. I would hate if the bad reception led to them deciding to stop producing more movies highlighting different cultures and communities.
