Rumors about wave 5 of the disney treasures?

Post by Prince Phillip »

It seems to me that about this time last year there were already rumors about the wave 4 treasures, and for the most part they were right, as we are getting Mickey in Black and White, Pluto, and MMC, so my questiuon is, are there any rumours or "leaked" info as to what the wave 5 treasures will be?

I suppose the 2 that are the most obvious are True Life Adventures since that was cut from wave 4, to fit their new pattern of 4, 3, 4, 3... and Donald Duck vol. II I hypothesis that these will be released everyother year, similar to how the mickey in color volumes were 2 years apart and the black and white volumes were 2 years apart...

As for the other 2, I would like to see the second Silly Symphonies set, and would wager that that 4th tin will be Disneyland TV related, something like "Fantasyland", or Disneyland vol. II, though I tend to lean more over to Fantasyland, a set with several vintage episodes of the Disneyland tv series that were fantasyland themed...

Anyway this is not another "what do you think will be in wave 5" but rather a question to those in the know, as to what the rumored releases might be... :) [/u]

Wasn't Song of the South rumoured to be part of the Treasures at some point? Could it be in wave 5?

I don't think SOTS is rumored, but Internet wishful thinking. Though it would make sense that 2006 is the year it'll come out (60th anniversary).

If it is released, I doubt it will be as part of a limited treasures series. The chance to finally make money off it will be too great for Disney.

And steady on! We only had Wave 3 four months ago, and I'm still trying to catch up with all of them before Wave 4 in 3 months! I don't want to even THINK about Wave 5 yet (nearly a year and a half away!).

I don't think there's anything intentional about the pattern of 4, 3, 4, 3.

I have never seen "Song of the South" rumored to be an upcoming Treasure release, only a lot of WISHING for it to be released as a Treasure. IMO SOTS does not "fit" the format so far reserved for Treasure releases, so I would never expect it to be released as a Treasure; rather if they do release it I'd like to see it as a Special Edition, not necessarily 2 disc unless they have a lot of supporting and relevant material to go with it.

Other than that, I'm actually kind of getting sick of reading about SOTS in these forum threads!! I wish Disney/Buena Vista would just make up their minds as to whether they will going to release it or not, and if so, give us a date. Jeez.

I would too, but it's only been through Treasures that we've gotten the release of other '40s films like The Reluctant Dragon and Victory Through Air Power. Admittedly, Song of the South doesn't specifically fit into a topic like "Behind the Scenes" or "Walt Disney on the Front Lines", but it would be a way to release the movie without it being clearly on store shelves, thus avoiding whatever hypothetical controversy there would otherwise be.

It could be done as an "Animation and Live Action" combined set, along with So Dear to My Heart. Bonus features could include excerpts from things like Three Caballeros, Mary Poppins, Pete's Dragon, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and examine how techniques have changed and improved over time. Of course by this point, the focus begins to leave Disney the man and land with Disney the studio, which hasn't been the primary focus of the Treasures, for the most part.

But seeing as how we don't seem to be getting Song of the South or So Dear to My Heart otherwise, I wouldn't be opposed to stretching the Treasures idea to encompass them. Of course, you could even have Maltin introducing, as he has expressed desire to, with messages about the dangers of stereotyping slaves and sheep.

Speaking of So Dear to My Heart, we never have received a definite answer as to why the DVD has been delayed, when it appears to have been finished being produced. I know some people have optimistically thought it might be considered to be packed with an upcoming SOTS release. What other possible reason could Disney have for witholding this disc?

I wouldn't care one way or the other if SOTS got a Treasures release or a non-Treasures release, but it is true that releasing it as a Treasures thingy is something that has only been brought up by fans on message boards. Acting like there's something to hide might only fan the flames of controversy (if there really is any controversy). Leonard Maltin can be on whatever version they decide to release of it. One thing they could also do is have some famous black person (James Earl Jones? Bill Cosby? Eddie Murphy? Raven? MC Hammer? a CGI Martin Luther King, Jr.?) discuss it in its historical context and/or have some black-oriented organization (NAACP?) write a letter that can be included with each copy saying something along the lines of "Walt Disney's The Song of the South is a delightful film that blends live action with animation to depict a fanciful tale that occurs after the events of the Civil War and after all of the slaves in the South had been freed. While we decry racism where it does exist, we also feel it is pointless to be making baseless accusations of racism and any accusation of racism leveled against The Song of the South is baseless. etc. etc. etc."

If that's the case I'll stick with my LD transfer or get a pirated copy of the DVD

So it might be a stupid idea. Personally I don't think it needs anything like what I suggested but if it helps to actually get the movie released then a lot of people would welcome it. I already have my own copy of the movie anyways. If an official thing came out I'd buy it though.

Personally I think it was a smart idea and probably the only way it is going to fly. I can't imagine why that would stop anyone from buying it.
Although, Raven doing it would be a pretty stupid idea. What's she going to say? Exslaves had to wear really yucky clothes. You would need somebody with some credibility, not some fourth rate skank.
