Snow White/Surround Sound/Star Wars

I finally got a surround Sound System. Just got it yesterday, YEAY! Anyway, I saw Snow White, my first movie with the surround sound, and the back speakers did not work. Is this because of the DVD just not being made for the back speakers, or the system. The system, I believe, is Dts and not 5.1, does this make the difference?

Oh... and Luke noticed the internation DVD forum as I was coming into General Discussion...

Well Prince Phillip, I think you chose the wrong film to test you surround system. Yes, the surround speakers do work, but since "Snow White" is such an old movie, the sound still is largely mono. Just watch "Atlantis' or "Treasure Planet" on your surround system and you'l see (or hear...) the difference!

Or any of the Pixar movies. Gary Rydstrom's sound design on them is just awesome. Lots of bass and will give the surrounds a fantastic workout. Or Dinosaur, too.

Yeah... after I posted this, I watched Attack of the Clones, my favorite Star Wars, thus far, and was blown a way... I wouldv'e picked a different Disney movie to test it, but of the few I have, Snow White is the one I had seen the least amount of times (1 1/2, I think) and it was like when the DVD first came out... Any way, I'm happy to hear that the DVD and sound are fine

for the longest time, i couldn't get my bose 5.1 surround to work. well i talked to a guy from the "bose" outlet store and on the remote control for the system, if you hold the surround speaker setup for like 7 seconds or something you'll hear a beep and THAT actually is what puts the surround sound on. ever since i've found this out, all my dvds that i thought cheated on the sound seem so much better INCLUDING Snow White. i'm not sure what system type and all you have, but if your remote can switch between 5 speaker, 3 speaker, and 2 speaker, hold the five speaker button down until you hear a beeping sound. hope this helps and let me know if it works.

WHAT?!?! I did really like it, but A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and even Return of the Jedi blow it out of the water!

Sorry, I know this is off-topic, but Phil brought it up in this thread, so I had to give my 2 cents as a current Star Wars buff who use to eat, sleep, breath SW before I rediscovered my passion for Disney.

^^^Sorry Sulley, I think the original ones are great and everything, but this one just has so much more... It has the love story between Anikan and Padme, it has the cool, IMO, scene at the factory, lots of Obi-Wan, the scenes on the clone planet were cool, and lots of Jedi... the landscapes, cotumes, music were all great, and frankly before I saw this, I was tired of the whole Star Wars thing, I mean it was kinda cool and all, but this really sparked up my interest in it, and I can't wait for #3! It is all building up to the next three, which are also great, and classics. Before this one, I think my fav was Jedi, but now it is this one...

I have a cheap $260 Phillips 5 disc, P-scan DVD/Reciever, 500w power... don't know what alot of the tech talk means except P-scan and 5 disc... It was purchased at Sam's Club, if you know what I'm talking about... It's not a $1,000 - $2,000 system, but it was all my mom and I could afford, but I think it is good.

From what I can tell, it doesn't have a 2, 3, or 5 speaker option, I think it just automatically activates all the speakers that are needed...

Whenever there is the THX thing at the begging of a movie, one of my favorite parts, all the speakers are audible, crisp and clear, but at times during the movie, I can barely hear some of the speakers, even though the sound is maxed out... this could be do to 500w power? Well, I guess I still have to do some more surfing through the manual.

It's kinda hard to understand some of the tech terms and also hard to describe some of the problems, but it seems like a worthy set, so I'm not complaining.

MAN! I thought I'd never convince my mom to get a SSS! But yesterday was the day!

You're absolutely right... I would recomend the traffic jam sequence from "Toy Story 2". Awsome use of all the speakers and great subwoofer punch!
But the DTS track from "Atlantis" is for sure the best Disney track you can use to demonstrate the capabilities of your surround system. Even if you don't like the film very much, just skip to the action sequences... Pretty impressive!

You make good points, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I do very much look forward to Star Wars III; I know that Chewbacca is in it, and maybe the entire Wookie planet, which has some weird name like Kashyyyk. I'm excited about seeing all the key plot points play out that we know are inevitable. I know that for the longest time the date has been 5/25/05, but I heard what I think was a major mistake on the news when they said it was coming out next summer. Can anyone confirm this?

Of course I love all the SW films equally, as I consider them sacred and a way of life. BUT... Episode II rules, Yoda is the coolest lil person ever! I have to say person as we don't know what species he is. But anyway, Yoda rules so much in that movie, from his first lines to his glorious and spectacular fight at the end. Plus we finally got a look at the Clone Wars, even though it was only the first battle, what a battle it was! Plus Yoda kicks major butt!

SW rocks! i have Epidose 1 and 2 on DVD and the originals on VHS

i hope we dont have to wait alot more for the originals to come to DVD

Well, though I haven't bought any, there are some Japanese All-Region Discs going on eBay all the time, and I heard they're very good, but I'm gonna wait for the US version. I'm sure they're waiting until after E3, and that they're going to put out a "Star Wars Saga" 6-Pack, and beingas how I'm a sucker for movie sets, I'll probably just sell my other prequel DVDs when this happens.

The May 2005 date is correct; starwars.com lists the date as Summer 2005. Principal photography just began this month.

I hope when all 6 Star Wars movies are released they include the original versions of IV, V, & VI--I don't bet on it though. The Special Editions are excellent, but the movies were great before. Right?! George Lucas has said on numerous occasions that the Special Editions are his final and complete versions of those movies and all future releases will be the Special Editions. I hope he changes his mind. I think he has been paying too much attention to Disney and all the "Special Editions" they've released. Disney's Special Editions are fine also, but the original editions are excellent without adding extra songs,etc. The option should be available to watch the movie as we remember seeing it the first time.

Just my two cents.

Wow, this thread's gone off topic...and I'm gonna do nothing to stop it.

I, for one, love Attack of the Clones despite its slow moments in the middle. I rank it either tied with or SLIGHTLY under Empire Strikes Back, with Jedi and Menace behind it. Although I like the SE's of the original trilogy (with the exception of the Greedo thing...), I agree that George should release the originals, as well. At least Spielberg got it right with giving us both versions of E.T. on the same release, even if some bonus material had to be sacrificed. I have a feeling despite Lucas' claims of not releasing the originals on DVD, he'll eventually cave in because the public demand for this is too great to ignore. If he had any market sense at all (which we ALL knowv the answer to that...) he'd release the originals because he'd make a ton of money off the releases.

I think 2006, is pretty much set in stone as the release date of the original trilogy...

Don't know if this is comforting or not... For me it really doesn't matter, I have the original SE trilogy released a few years back on VHS so if I get the erge to see it, I can always watch that.

Oh and Spacedog, disney got their idea for SE from Star Wars...

George Lucas told me that he was only planning on releasing his Special Edition Star Wars to DVDs WITHOUT the option of viewing them in the original cut. NOT like the disney ones where you can watch the original theatrical version. The only dvd version of the original trilogy that will be available will be the SE.

Seriously, I do find it quite silly to withhold the films this long in any form - they're like the most beloved films of all-time, there is NO reason they couldn't do anamorphic widescreen, 5.1, with a 10-minute retrospective on each, even take the supplements from the videos if necessary...and then in 2006, do a real killer Trilogy boxset. Include BOTH cuts of the films, and a whole bunch of supplements. Why would you NOT want to do that and profit accordingly? Instead, bootleggers profit.

And then, he's just going to shove the "Special Edition" "Greedo shoots first" nonsense down our throats and not let us watch the original cuts? What's up with that?
