And it def takes away from the fun and enjoyment of watching it. It's such a non event and reading all these fantastic reviews, this could have been at least another Moana, if not Zootopia-level success.farerb wrote:It's a shame really since theaters are closed here and we don't have Disney Plus, there really wasn't any marketing for this movie and most people I know (friends, family, colleagues) don't have any idea that a Disney movie is being released this week, that has never happened.rodis wrote:This is heartbreaking to know Disney has churned out a winner but theatres are closed and audiences can't experience it in the best way possible.

Thanks! I hope you enjoy it too when you get to see it!farerb wrote:Yes, I'm really glad it's getting good reviews, mainly for Osnat Shurer, who seems to really put her heart in this film so I'm glad for her, but also Disney seems to be back on the Revival path after the not so good reactions to Frozen II. They really should just do original films only.
I'm also glad that you're excited for this film, I hope you enjoy it

Info about old Disney movies can be as interesting as breaking news, if not more, and you post many of the latter as well. Your contribution is really important!blackcauldron85 wrote:Thanks you guys- I hardly post breaking news these days-- I can't take much credit!
I knew movies had to reach a certain score and a minimum number of reviews to be certified fresh, but I didn't know they had to meet all those requirements or that they could lose that status. That's all really interesting. Thanks for the info, farerb!blackcauldron85 wrote:Ooooh...I had no idea that "Certified Fresh" had an actual meaning.
That's a good question. I think it makes more sense she would have just the power she had at the beginning, but it would be a shame if she wouldn't be able to use the rest of the powers again. Well, we'll soon find out what happens! I agree about the clip. And the music was especially beautiful. I think that's the main theme of the score.blackcauldron85 wrote:That clip is beautiful!! So if Sisu's family is able to come back to life, will Sisu be the only one with all of the powers, or will her only power left will be that she's a strong swimmer? Or do all the dragons have magical powers but they had to unleash them all somehow?
I hadn't noticed that, but you're right. I wonder what she'll be called in the actual film.blackcauldron85 wrote:And how come sometimes she's marketed as just "Noi," other times "Little Noi," and other times "Baby Noi?" (She is "Baby Noi" sometimes, right?)
It's true, maybe it's mentioned in the art book. I don't always buy the art books of the new Disney movies, but this time I think I will.blackcauldron85 wrote:It *looks* like "Kaya" because they didn't put the "hat" on the letter R...but maybe they just scribbled it and was lazy? Will we never know!!? I wish the art book came out first...maybe it will mention Dragon Empire or Kaya (if Kaya is a thing).
You know, I thought the same when I saw that poster. She looks really good there.Disney's Divinity wrote:This is my favorite clip-art image of Sisu so far (of her dragon form, I mean).
Yeah, it's a real shame.rodis wrote:This is heartbreaking to know Disney has churned out a winner but theatres are closed and audiences can't experience it in the best way possible.
There's no Disney+ in your country, then? That's too bad. I hope theaters at least reopen there soon.farerb wrote:It's a shame really since theaters are closed here and we don't have Disney Plus, there really wasn't any marketing for this movie and most people I know (friends, family, colleagues) don't have any idea that a Disney movie is being released this week, that has never happened.

I only know one theater near me that will be showing Raya so far. I don't know if I'll go see it there or not...my mom is getting her 2nd vax this weekend, so maybe Ill wait a couple weeks before I go.

^ I was curious as to why some theaters wouldn't be playing the movie after reading your post, and then this article was in my inbox, saying that Cinemark, Harkins, & Cineplex are some theater chains not playing it (Warner Bros. giving better deals to theaters than Disney is {with the day-and-date streaming thing}):

Cinemas are open in my country, however there is no sign of Raya yet. I contacted the local film distributors and they told me the film will definitely get a theatrical release but they haven't yet decided on a date due to Covid!
Even if it were released this week - as it should have been - I am doubtful I would have gone to see it as my country registered a new Covid-19 record just yesterday. (336 new daily infections in a country of just 500,000 ... that's a lot!)
I doubt I will be seeing this in cinemas, which makes me sad. I missed Frozen II in 2019, and I never miss the new WDAS in theatres. I wanted to make sure it doesn't happen again with the next film, but here we are.

Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
Raya will be the first Disney Animation movie I don't see in theatres since Meet the Robinsons.
I also realised it will only be the seventh new WDAS movie I haven't seen in theatres since I started going to movie theatres. The Lion King is the first one I saw on the big screen and since then, for varying reasons, I only missed out on The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet, Chicken Little and the aforementioned Robinsons.
Hopefully, things have improved greatly once Encanto opens.

Poster and featurette about the food in the movie.
Thanks for posting! The concept art is beautiful and I'm glad Kelly Marie Tran is getting this "resurrection" of her career, as the article says. She deserved it after all what happened to her. Plus, it seems she's very talented. I wasn't particularly impressed by her in Star Wars, but judging by what I've heard of her as Raya so far, it looks like she did a great job voicing the character.farerb wrote:Resurrection of Kelly Marie Tran: On Surviving 'Star Wars' Bullying, the Pressures of Representation, and 'Raya and the Last Dragon'

Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
Saw it today. Looks amazing and the voices are really well done. Sisu and Raya are a lot of fun. Kind of found the side characters annoying and the ending was a bit confusing with the cross bow and Sisu dying and being resurrected. I felt like they could have done a bit more with the concept, like there are freaking dragons! Do something cool with them. I don't know a whole lot about eastern dragons but they are still awesome creatures and should do more amazing things.
The dragons remind me of Barbie a little bit, could have made the designs cooler.
I'd definitely recommend the movie otherwise

Thanks! We're probably the only country in Europe that hasn't begun the vaccination process, all due to the incompetent and ineffective government(s). New cases are on the rise too, but everything stays open until 11 PM and a lot of people really don't pay much attention to safety measures. So who knows what will happen in the coming days, there are some talks about stricter enforcement.Jules wrote:Good luck!Mooky wrote:I should be seeing this in a movie theater next week. Last movie I've seen in theaters was Wonder Woman 1984, back in December. I used to be a regular moviegoer, but the pandemic kind of made me realize I don't really miss going to theaters that much other than for event, VFX-heavy movies that are meant to be seen on the big screen. I spent the last year catching up on smaller releases from previous years that I haven't seen and was perfectly content watching them on my laptop/TV. Probably saw more movies in 2020 alone than in five previous years combined.
As for Disney's theatrical releases, beginning with 1998 onwards, I've seen them all (save for Mulan, Toy Story 2, Dinosaur), all the way up to Onward, which I missed as the lockdown began. So I've had an interrupted streak of about 20 years of seeing Disney movies in theaters. I've also been lucky to catch The Little Mermaid ('97 re-release master) sometimes in 2006 and The Lion King 3D version in 2011 (I think).
I'm very much looking forward to Raya as the movie looks beautiful. I hope the story delivers too.

I get off just after noon today, so I think I will have time to catch a matinee. I hope I’m the only one in the theater but if not I’ll have my (Mickey Mouse) mask and I’ll buy popcorn on my way out. I think the last time I was in a movie theater was December 2019 for The Rise of Skywalker.
I’m very excited to see the movie! I’ve stayed pretty spoiler free so I’m looking forward to enjoying the ride.

I just watched this on Disney+!!! It was incredible. I knew I'd love it, and it did not disappoint! I want to watch it again tomorrow so I can take notes about things that caught my attention.
Just a head's up if you're watching it tonight-- I don't know who decided to put WDAS' newest film and the WandaVision finale on Disney+ the same day, but Disney+ was a little glitchy. Not too bad (watching it at 7pm-ish) but if you get to a part and you see black but hear audio, rewind it a bit because it's not supposed to be black
.
Raya & Namaari both did wrong, but together. Both at first, when Raya showed her where the gem was, and Namaari betrayed her, and then later when Sisu 'died.' So it's hard to get mad only at one of the princesses, since they both did bad. And then they both did good. I thought that that was poignant.
My husband said that he wants to know more about where the Druun originated from, and more about the dragons. I wonder if they will make a sequel or a TV show...
I was surprised to see Namaari's mom at the very end. I wonder how hard it was for Namaari to convince her that working together for Kumandra is better than just helping out Fang...
This movie gave me all the feels. Laughter, sadness, excitement, fear. So so so good. And so so so beautiful.

^I'm glad you liked it, blackcauldron85!
I've watched it too. Finally, I was able to see it in a theater! I still can't believe it! I checked the websites of the theaters near where I live once again today just in case, and to my surprise, one of them had just reopened. I went with my brother and we were the only people in the theater. I guess most people didn't know it was open. I wasn't disappointed by the movie either. I loved it. I think it's among the best from the Revival. I'd say it's more or less on par with Moana, though I think it's too early for me to know what place it would have in my ranking.
My favorite part was the climax-ending. I think it was really well made. I teared up twice during that part. But the whole movie was good. Some critics said the story was formulaic and predictable, but I don't think that's true. At least, it's less formulaic than other recent movies from the studio. There were many things I didn't see coming. I was actually surprised by that because I've seen every trailer and promo and read a lot of stuff about it, so I thought I knew more or less how a big part of the story would go. Though, it's also true that this time I've been able to avoid all the major spoilers, something I don't always achieve; especially when it's a movie I'm really excited for. I found it refreshing that (mild spoiler) Sisu isn't reluctant to help Raya at all. She's actually the opposite of most recent similar characters. Also, it doesn't really feel like a buddy road trip movie; they're more like a team, thanks to the other members of the group. And, though they visit several places, it doesn't feel episodic either.
Both Raya and Sisu are great characters, in my opinion, but I didn't dislike any character. The misfits were all likeable, especially Boun, and I also really liked Namaari. The only ones I think some people might find annoying are Noi and the Ongis, but they weren't bad either. I saw the dubbed version, which was the only one available, so I can't judge the original voice cast. The dub was really good, but I don't understand why they decided to pronounce Namaari differently than in the original version. I think James Newton Howard did a good job with the score too.
And I'm so glad I was able to see the short in front of Raya. It was so beautiful. After it finished, I thought seeing the film in theaters was already worth it just for that. I bet it'll be nominated for the Oscars next year.
I agree. I think Namaari did more wrong than Raya, though, but they explained her motivations, which were mainly to serve her clan and make her mother proud.

I was curious to know more about the dragons as well. Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
I think that Namaari's initial bad thing, with the gem, as you said, was more wrong than Raya showing her where the gem was. It makes sense why she did it, out of caring for her people...Raya was wrong to show her, and as someone with trust issues, I was very disappointed in Raya! but just showing Namaari wasn't bad in and of itself if she'd have kept the secret. But also, Raya and Benja had said that the other clans thought that the gem brought prosperity to Heart, and it makes sense that they would be jealous and want that power for their lands. So, yeah, Namaari was just looking out for her people, but both girls brought the Druun on by their selfish actions.D82 wrote:I agree. I think Namaari did more wrong than Raya, though, but they explained her motivations, which were mainly to serve her clan and make her mother proud.
It was like a split-second, so I need to pay extra attention next time, but was Namaari not going to pull the trigger...? It was Raya who didn't trust Namaari and Sisu was hit...If Raya didn't use her sword, then Namaari wouldn't have pulled the trigger, and Sisu wouldn't have died.
I really like that there's a lot of grey area; Namaari's not all bad, and Raya's not a flawless heroine. They both make mistakes, but they both learn and grow. I like both of them so much. I was upset with them a lot

Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
Why was Raya gleefully happy to tell Namaari that she has found Sisu but minutes later she tells her to transform herself and not let anyone know who she is, though she calls her Sisu a lot in front of other people?
