Disney's Divinity wrote:All those "Best since Zootopia" comments are encouraging.
Yes, they are. I'm trying not to have too high expectations, as these reactions are usually more positive than the actual reviews, but this time they're even more favorable than usual, and that's a good sign.
Disney's Divinity wrote:It's a shame vaccines haven't been more widely available sooner. I'm not sure what it's reasonable to expect in the best case scenario for this film. I don't think Frozen or Zootopia could have hit a billion during the pandemic either. The top 2020 movie made only 200 million domestically (the highest internationally made 400 million). So far Wonder Woman (released on Christmas) has only 42.6 mil. domestically and the Croods (released Nov. 25th) has made 50.8 million. So I guess the most to hope for is around 45-60 million range?
Yeah, it's a shame the current situation is not better. However, if the film is really as good as they say, I think it'll end up being profitable for them in the long run one way or another.

oh so Namari's animal companion is much more like a cat than a wolf. Neat!

Looks like from the reviews so far, hopefully this film won't have the plotting/world building issues that Frozen 2 had.

Happy to report that #RayaAndTheLastDragon is a beautiful film stuffed w/ humor, cool fight scenes, delicious food & a great duo (Kelly Marie Tran & Awkwafina) at its heart. Also loved its positive themes about trust & believing in people even when you're at odds w/ one another

#RayaAndTheLastDragon is absolutely dazzling. Wonderfully designed with action, comedy (Awkwafina is sensational) and a heartfelt, touching message of the importance of trusting your fellow person, breaking down prejudices and finding selflessness is a selfish time. Stunning.

Raya and the Last Dragon is a stunningly beautiful film. The animation is exquisite, the score, the voice acting, the mythology, it all works. You MAY want to put a box of Kleenex on retainer. Review coming March 1.

We’ve seen #DisneyRaya: “It's a breathtaking journey — the visuals are crisp, and the storyline is action-packed and brimming with girl power. @DisneyRaya is gorgeous, funny, & heartwarming. And for a Disney princess, Raya is pretty bad-ass.” – Katy Kroll, http://Looper.com

Everything about RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON is beautiful - the animation, the story, the Southeast Asian representation, the martial arts, the music - then add in a lot of buttkickery. Awkwafina and Kelly Marie Tran are excellent! Here’s to the fierce ones with heart.

Took a few days to get my head around my feelings about #DisneyRaya. It’s beautiful.

It’s artistically beautiful. Yes. But more importantly, it’s a beautiful depiction of unity through forgiveness.

Timely, but hopefully motivating for all of us to take the first step.

New clip from an interview with Awkwafina, another interview with Kelly Marie Tran, and new promo from Taiwan.

And here are the first two negative (or at least not so positive) reactions followed by more positive ones:
Raya and The Last Dragon: Serviceable albeit underwhelming. It looks pretty and the score is cool but it’s fairly minor. Full review coming Monday.
Source: https://twitter.com/mattrorabeck/status ... 9902954496
RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON is very ambitious, even for a Disney pic. Though it doesn't reach its full potential and slips into familiarity. Not the homerun I was expecting, nonetheless, it truly does find moments to shine and Kelly Marie Tran can do no wrong.

More conversations are to be had so I won't go into the gripes for now. I would have definitely seen it in a theater. Just wish they stuck to more of the new ideas with this one. I'm interested to see how this does on premiere access.

#DisneyRaya features a feel-good message set within Kumandra, a world you'll hope becomes a land in a Disney theme park someday. It give you Pandora-like feelings of longing as soon as the credits start to roll. See it March 5th in theaters and on #DisneyPlus Premier Access.

I was lucky to preview this movie over the weekend and I can't stop thinking about it. Really happy young girls will have Raya and her team as Disney animated heroes, especially because representation matters.

Finished my screening for #RayaAndTheLastDragon and I was a crying mess by the end. Full review to come soon but I will say it's the most beautiful, action packed, & moving film from Disney Animation yet.

Yo. Just watched #RayaAndTheLastDragon...I am wrecked. Seriously... I am Viola Davis Oscar caliber crying. So many emotions I need to process but I will say this: It’s a movie that the Asian community needs right now on so many levels. We need to be Kumandra. So yes, I liked it.

Well, that's a bit lazy... They just took a close-up from one of the posters and slapped it on there (cutting off Sisu's shadow in the process). Idk if I'll buy the soundtrack for a while. Since it's just score, I'll probably wait until I can get it for almost nothing.

• "Lead the Way" lyric video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbYPUUshKaM

• New promos:

• Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina talk about the movie and about diversity and representation in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7lj2oPb1Yw

• New promotional images from China: https://weibo.com/1642553272/K3y2PAWvd

• And a new wave of reactions. This time it seems they're mainly from critics. Most of them are positive, but there are several that aren't so glowing. Judging by the comments, it seems the weakest aspect is the story, which for some is a bit formulaic and simple, while the strongest point is apparently the film's message.
Raya and The Last Dragon is the best Disney animated film since Moana. A joyous experience celebrating believing in oneself & learning how to trust in others. The gorgeous animation paired with the perfect voice cast make #RayaAndTheLastDragon a film that shouldn’t be missed.

Finally finished watching #RayaAndTheLastDragon. A lot of emotions to unpack, but overall - if any film can restore faith in humanity again, this is it. Hope, forgiveness, trust, love - messages the WORLD needs to heal right now.

So much visually stunning ASIAN-ness!

Just finished #RayaAndTheLastDragon and all I can say is WOW. Vibrant, emotional and very funny. It has the structure of Moana but with a more expanded world and some really great action

If #Mulan and #HowToTrainYourDragon had a baby, it would probably be #RayaAndTheLastDragon.
That said, it's an enjoyable, great-looking film that sets a pretty high bar for 2021 animated features.
Try and see it on as BIG a screen as possible.
But definitely see it.

#RayaAndTheLastDragon is beautiful, hilarious, touching & visually gorgeous. I love its message of trust & the importance of teamwork. This action filled journey with great side characters is a must watch! Oh yeah, it wouldn't hurt to have some kleenex nearby.

So I watched #RayaAndTheLastDragon last weekend! I'm enjoying Disney's pivot from traditional princess narratives to action-based protagonists, and Raya is no exception. It reminded me of Moana, which I also loved; not because they were alike, but from the way they made me feel.

As with any Disney production, #Raya is gorgeous to behold. Each character is fun and memorable, although obviously Kelly Marie Tran's Raya and Awkwafina's Sisu were the standout performances. I've heard Sisu compared to Genie from Aladdin and I definitely got that vibe.

Additionally, #RayaAndTheLastDragon's message and themes about trust really resonated with me. They didn't plan for these times we've found ourselves in, but it feels more timely than ever. Cue the waterworks!

I pretty much enjoyed #RayaAndTheLastDragon I do feel its story is a bit rushed, but it serves an uplifting message of community in a time when we need it most. It's also animated quite well, though I do wish the hand-drawn segments were the entire film.

I just watched #RayaAndTheLastDragon again to review and I cried again. It really pulls at your heart strings in believing in people. I was also able to focus on the aesthetics more and you're in for a treat.

#RayaAndTheLastDragon is one of the really good ones. The scenery is beautiful, the animation is lovely, all of the characters are so well done, the music is stunning, and the third act made me ugly cry. This one isn't pulling any punches.
Source: https://twitter.com/katiesmovies/status ... 5713526784
#RayaAndTheLastDragon looks fantastic, and features a great vocal cast (including Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Sandra Oh, and Benedict Wong), but sadly it's rather ho-hum in the story department, making it one of Disney's more forgettable efforts.

#RayaAndTheLastDragon is a fun, action-packed adventure with a beautiful message of trust and community. Oh, and it’s VISUALLY STUNNING! Literally one of the most gorgeous animated films I’ve seen recently. Cannot confirm nor deny that I shed a few tears at the end
Source: https://twitter.com/kaymaldo/status/1365132611383939075
#RayaAndTheLastDragon is action packed and full of heart. Classic Disney at it’s best. It has a great message about trust and loving your friends and family. The best I’ve seen from Disney animation since Moana. Plus the short film before the actual film was very sweet as well.
Source: https://twitter.com/RyanOTooleMR/status ... 8759054340
just rewatched RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, somehow even better the second round. it's so hopeful and full of heart; funny but never too cheesy. the references to SEA cultures –from muay thai to rumah gadang to silat to the foods– are rich and detailed. i love, love, love it.

RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON is a lot of fun. An action-packed and epic adventure on a massive scale that still manages to feel intimate — in both its characters and its beautiful animation. The story itself is fairly standard, but still executed well. Kelly Marie Tran crushes it.
Source: https://twitter.com/zach_goins/status/1 ... 9524029452
RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON is like no other Disney film before it, a bracingly grim epic fantasy with bruising action, a broken heart, and stuffed to bursting with wonder.
Source: https://twitter.com/TheTrueBrendanF/sta ... 2482291712
While #RayaAndTheLastDragon suffers from formulaic structuring and plots, it excels in its characters and beautiful animation, including some of the best animated action scenes I’ve seen from Disney. A fun and cute film that leans, thankfully, more Moana than Frozen.

#RayaAndTheLastDragon does not reach the heights of the top echelon of Disney animation but nevertheless is a compelling, colorful, and timely adventure. I also can't wait for the inevitable short featuring [redacted]. Stay tuned for my review this Monday at noon EST.

#RayaAndTheLastDragon was a beautiful film and honestly, the world is dark and awful right now, and this pushes the audience, which is targeted to children to think beyond our pain, even when its hard.

I have some small issues with the film which I'll explain in my review but I think the overall message is a good one. Granted it'll be hit or miss for some people based on the state of the world.

Listen I’ll have more complex feelings in a full review next week but seriously #RayaAndTheLastDragon is incredible. So moving and well done. Kelly Marie Tran is my hero. Gemma Chan is my heart. Awkwafina is perfect. I loved this movie so much.

I've already watched "RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON" twice now.

As a South East Asian, I never thought I'd live to see the day that Disney would make a movie featuring characters that look like me.

They got it down pat.

It was wonderful.

RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON (Hall, Estrada, '21) | Mix of animation styles offers a glimpse into what this could have been, but convoluted mythology and over-expository script bog down the momentum.

Fluctuates between engaging high fantasy and awkward storytelling. The themes of togetherness resonate, but the idea that we must trust those who have repeatedly proven themselves untrustworthy in order to overcome adversity seems ill-conceived.

Loved the hand-drawn segments but they're too brief and infrequent to make any really impact. Tran and Awkwafina are both strong and provide a few emotional grace notes, but the film overall feels too busy to really land any solid punches.

Raya calls Namaari a Venturi? Google says that's a tube and some scientific jargon...I am clearly missing something, unless that's like what they call people from her tribe? It looks so good, though!!!

DisneyFan97, that is awesome! (Stay safe!!)

I'm happy for you, DisneyFan97! :) I wish I could see it on the big screen too, but theaters are still closed where I live and it seems they won't open again until at least the end of March. I'm very glad Disney decided to release the film on Disney+ as well, otherwise I wouldn't be able to see it until much later.

I wondered what that word meant too. Maybe it means something different in one of the languages from Southeast Asia and it'll be explained in the movie.

Same here! I think I haven't been so excited for a movie since Moana.

It's not bad, but I also wish they had chosen a more interesting artwork for the cover. The ones for Japan and Korea are different, but also recycled from posters:

Image Image

I haven't listened to the entire score yet. What I've heard so far sounds a bit more modern than I expected, but not bad. I like the end credits song too. It's better than I expected from the snippet. By the way, the Korean version has also been released.
unprincess wrote:oh so Namari's animal companion is much more like a cat than a wolf. Neat!
On WDAS's website, it says their design is inspired by the serval and the caracal, two wild cats. But, judging by their fangs and tongues (and maybe also their tails) in this concept art, I think they might be part snake as well, just like the Ongis are part fish and Tuk Tuk part insect.

Image

Speaking of that website, there are a couple of things on it I wanted to comment. First, are the images in the intro (first two images below) from the film's animated prologue? Some of them are featured in one of the latest promos, so I guess they are. That means there'll be more than one style of 2D animation in the film.

Image Image

Image Image

And are scars what Raya has on her face in these pieces of concept art? Apparently, she had at least one on her eyebrow until quite late in development. They said in an interview that she has physical scars as well as emotional ones, so though not on the face, maybe she still has one or two in the final film.

Image Image Image

Lastly, in some of the early concepts Sisu looked more like the traditional Southeast Asian depictions of dragons, and in the last one she has a different color scheme:

• Disney has shared a new clip featuring young Raya and her father on Instagram. In the same post they also confirm Kelly Marie Tran voices the young version of the character. She and Daniel Dae Kim, the voice of Benja, talk a bit about the movie in this video.

• One of the books about the movie, reveals one of the Ongis (Dyan, the one who wears a big hat) is female. Since one of them is quite younger than the other two, could they be a family of father, mother and son?

• According to one critic, the film is 114 minutes long, so maybe it's longer than we thought.

• New TV spots and promos:

• And more reactions:
I really liked #RayaAndTheLastDragon. Action-packed, vibrant and funny, a cute roly poly sidekick, fighting babies and monkeys, great choreography. It's slim and simple on theme but voice work by Kelly Marie Tran, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Patti Harrison, Sandra Oh makes up for it.

#RayaAndTheLastDragon follows a partially disappointing formulaic story but compensates it with stunning animation, a chill-inducing score, and quite a nice ending.

Great voice work too but I wish some of the visuals’ creativity went to the narrative.

Beautiful message, though.

#RayaAndTheLastDragon is beautiful and another hit from Disney Animation. It’s the studio’s best film since Moana. VISUALLY STUNNING and hilarious and heartwarming. Awkwafina and Kelly Marie Tran do great voice work. A truly enjoyable film.

#RayaAndTheLastDragon es hermosa, preciosa e increíble. The film is full of so much heart. It’s perfect for fans of Moana, Mulan, Indiana Jones, & a bit of Lord of the Rings. The film falls into a formulaic pattern, but I didn’t mind. IN LOVE WITH THE SCORE & FIGHTS!

I just finished watching #RayaAndTheLastDragon! Phenomenal movie, Kelly Marie Tran kills it as Raya. The side characters are also all great, my personal favorite is Captain Boun. Great family movie, should be a great indicator of how well Premiere Access can perform.

#RayaAndTheLastDragon was an absolute Blast! Another Great Film from Disney that is one of their best in recent years, with excellent characters and plot, and great mythology of the world and exposition, and a badass main character, this is definitely another win for Disney.

Finally watched a screener of #RayaAndTheLastDragon and SO MANY kickass Southeast Asian women characters. I also kinda crushed on Raya's dad, Chief Benja (voiced by Daniel Dae Kim).

I just finished #RayaAndTheLastDragon and really enjoyed it. It's super creative, the animation is amazing and it all just works really well. Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina are both excellent and I really loved Benedict Wong's role.

Though it's certainly unintentional, there's a pretty obvious parallel to be drawn to the pandemic in this movie and it's just a very emotionally pleasing film to watch right now.

An amazing adventure of charming well developed characters, action, excitement, fantasy and a strong message about thrust that comes organically.

Watched #RayaAndTheLastDragon and... it is a captivating adventure. The visuals, inspired by the beauty of Southeast Asia, made me gasp nearly every scene. As for its warrior heroine and charming dragon, what an important and essential message they delivered for us all.

#RayaAndTheLastDragon features awesome action and style to spare, along with phenomenal hand-to-hand combat. It’s a familiar story, but charming characters (especially Awkwafina) help this fit nicely into the Disney canon.

It’s also surprisingly funny, but with lots of heart.

#RayaAndTheLastDragon is awesome! In 114 minutes, it effortlessly establishes a rich, vibrant fantasy world with great characters, and one of my all-time favourite movie dragons. @awkwafina steals the show, but #KellyMarieTran is also great. Review on Monday!

RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON is a gorgeous Kung Fu fantasy epic all about the nearly impossible work of bridge building, & the world ending peril we face if we refuse to do that work. Moving, charming, vividly animated, great martial arts.

Loved Raya and The Last Dragon. Great voice-work, stunning visuals, exciting fight sequences, and a strong emotional core. Left Soul in the dust imo. Also, I'm going to need a Tuk-Tuk...

Not entirely sure what I think about the dragon's personality. It seems a bit too human for me. But I will give the movie a chance before I say anything else in that regard.
D82 wrote:Disney has shared a new clip featuring young Raya and her father on Instagram. In the same post they also confirm Kelly Marie Tran voices the young version of the character. She and Daniel Dae Kim, the voice of Benja, talk a bit about the movie in this video.
You sure put a lot of hard work and effort into the posts. It makes it a lot easier to keep ourselves updated.

I heard that as well, but I wasn't sure it that was true, I also saw 117 minutes but I have no idea what the source is. Anyway it seems that 90 minutes is just a placeholder, the same happened with Soul.

You know what? After having listened to soundtrack, I must say that it was just "meh". It`s clearly that the composer has been inspired by action movies as Tomb Raider and such, since the score had similar a vibe to it. All in all, it felt similar to Moana`s soundtrack. And while it had some fine cues, it was far from the leagues of James Newton Howards`s previous scores from Disney.

I'm going to watch it tomorrow! (at the press premiere)

My invitation says that the movie plus the short are 114 minutes total.

I'm going to confirm it tomorrow. Can't wait!
