Sotiris wrote:While I do think Raya will be connected to the Kumandra flower in some way, she is shown to be holding it in the doll set after all, I highly doubt she'll be wearing it as necklace or a bracelet.
I was actually thinking of her wearing the flower as a motif, not the Kumandra flower itself. I agree she probably won't be wearing the actual flower in the movie.
Sotiris wrote:However, if the Druun having been ruling since Raya was little then why has it suddenly become important to locate the dragon gem and the last dragon? What event in present day has caused this urgency?
That's a good point. That part is still confusing. The synopses make it seem the second Druun invasion happens right before Raya decides to go on a journey to find the last dragon. But then, how was her father killed if there was only one previous Druun attack which happened 500 years before?
Sotiris wrote:Maybe the fragments of the dragon gem will reside inside five special Kumandra flowers. I think that would be cool.

I think you could be right about that because finding both the flowers and the fragments of the gem seems like too much.
Sotiris wrote:I can't think of any at the top of my head. But I don't think Disney will require a Southeast Asian performer. They didn't seem to limit themselves before in this regard. They got Alessia Cara for Moana and she isn't Polynesian. They'll probably get a singer of color though to avoid any potential scrutiny.
You're right, if they didn't choose a Polynesian singer for Moana, they probably won't pick a Southeast Asian one for Raya either. Though, most likely it'll be a singer of color, as you say.
Sotiris wrote:So which color represents Raya's clan? It can't be green like the color of the outfits she and her father wore when addressing the rest of the clans since that's already taken. Is it blue like the color of the clothing she wore during training as a kid? It's got to be something otherwise it would be inconsistent.
I don't know, but some of the clans seem to have more than one color on their clothes, so maybe Raya's clan colors are both green (a different shade from the green clan) and blue.
Sotiris wrote:It seems that the representatives of the five clans (and possibly their Kumandra flowers) will be needed to activate the full powers of the dragon gem.
Yes, it seems so. Though, maybe in the film the representatives just need to place the flowers around the dragon gem, for example, and not stand there themselves.
Sotiris wrote:I think it's just the angle and the quality of the photos that makes it look a bit different.
I guess you're right. After all, the outfits and everything else look exactly the same.

Oh, I didn't realize that. Having a flower pattern on her clothing is nice too, but I would have preferred an accessory.

Exactly. Hopefully, the timeline and the sequence of events is clear in the film.
D82 wrote:I think you could be right about that because finding both the flowers and the fragments of the gem seems like too much.
Unless, of course, there's only one flower in the film; the one Raya finds as a child.
D82 wrote:Though, maybe in the film the representatives just need to place the flowers around the dragon gem, for example, and not stand there themselves.
That's a good guess. Maybe there will be a specific tablet or relic of some kind, like there was in the toys, where the dragon gem and the flowers need to be placed.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I did mean an accessory. One featuring the flower, but not the actual magical one; just a representation of it.
Sotiris wrote:Exactly. Hopefully, the timeline and the sequence of events is clear in the film.
I guess it will. We just don't have enough info right now to be able to guess it.
Sotiris wrote:Unless, of course, there's only one flower in the film; the one Raya finds as a child.
That's also possible.
unprincess wrote:Seems weird that Raya's clan is represented by a dragon and the others are colors. Though the symbols do vaguely look like animals: a snake, a beetle, a bat? a spider? :?
Judging by the trailer version of the symbols, the pink one is more likely to be a claw than a spider. But a claw is a part of the animal, so maybe you're right that they represent animals. I wonder which are the final designs, the ones in the trailer or the ones used in merchandise.

By the way, here are more figures. Like with the symbols, the top of young Raya's outfit is different in merchandise. I wonder if this is an indication that the footage with her training with her father from the trailer won't be in the actual movie. And is Raya wearing her hair in a bun in one of the figures?

The pink one is clearly a claw, the yellow one looks like it could be a snake (especially its merch equivalent), the green one looks to me like two skulls of horned animals next to each other, but I don't get an animal vibe with the white one. Given that merchandise uses the old design of Raya, I think it's more likely theirs are the outdated clan designs than the trailer's.

Yes, the yellow one could be a snake and I also thought the green one looked like horns, but it's true; the white one is not easy to guess.

Maybe she has an alternate top that she wears beneath her formal attire. If you notice, the color of her pants doesn't match her top. It seems like the turquoise pants are a set with the fancy top of the same color.

To me, that looks like the braids she always has as an adult. It's weird she doesn't have long hair. Could it be a manufacturing error?

You're right, I hadn't noticed that.

It's true, it's just her braids. Maybe she's wearing her hair in a ponytail then.

Raya's hand looks oddly proportioned and rubbery in that still.

Raya looks quite live-action-y in that shot. The baby looks weird too. Is her head supposed to be square-shaped?

It reminds me the realistic design that Dreamworks tried to do with How to Train Your Dragon.

Thanks to the name of the clans revealed in the new EW article (the land of Heart, Talon, Fang, Spine, and Tail), I guess we can finally know what their symbols represent. The land of Heart was revealed long ago as the name of Raya's clan and the green one is confirmed to be Spine in the article, so that's probably what its symbol is. The pink one is clearly from Talon, and I suppose Fang is the white one and Tail the yellow one. They must be named after the different parts of a dragon's body. I guess it's a metaphor for the need of the five clans to be united to form a full body in order to be able to defeat the invaders.

Judging by other images of her, I think it is. She looks a bit too photorealistic for my taste in that still, but I like the little buns she has. I wonder how she can "run a little con game in town" at such a young age.

Yes, the characters look more photorealistic than usual.

So cute!

@D82: I agree, tail and talons are obvious. I would think the green one would be fangs and the white one on the end would be the spine? The white one has a long red pole--symbolizing the spine? The little lines hanging out and down from the red pole remind me of shoulders & arms (held up by the spine) and the little symbol below the white box reminds me of an exoskeleton.

I thought the same at first too, but the article says Tong is from Spine and we know from his toy figure that his clan symbol is the green one. So, unless the article is mistaken, I guess it's like I said.

I know, right? She looks awkwardly strange with that pose.

The symbols make more sense now. I like the theme of unity and how different parts (clans) make a whole (nation). We still haven't learned though what the symbol of Raya's clan is (something heart-shaped maybe?) and its signature color. With such emphasis on dragons everywhere in Kumandra, it's hard to believe that its people at one point stopped believing they actually existed.

Raya's clan symbol is the one with the dragon and the gem (the one below). I guess the gem maybe symbolizes the heart of a dragon. But yes, we still don't know its signature color. I think it'll be blue, since as you pointed out, the green is already taken, even though they also wear green sometimes.

Yeah, that's something I've been thinking about too. It doesn't make much sense. Especially, given that in tribes such as these and in past times people usually believed in magic of some kind.

Oh, my bad. I thought you were speculating which picture must belong to which.

Don't worry. Yes, I was speculating about the other symbols, so it's normal you thought I was doing it about all of them. :)
