They never talk to each other but the way Triton nods at him at the end is very touching and also a way to confirm his approval.

My biggest issue with Eric is how he was about to propose to Ariel before Vanessa showed up. Even though he was going to marry the mute girl, he would have had the mystery girl in his mind and Ariel would have still been only a replacement. The fact that he saves everyone at the end makes up for that, at least it does for me.

Now, I love The Little Mermaid but I think one of its faults is the ending. It’s not Eric’s story— it’s Ariel’s. I think it would be a much more powerful ending to have Ariel solve her problems and prove to King Triton that she can watch out for herself and fix her own problems. That’s the heart of the story— the father/daughter relationship.
The people who made The Little Mermaid originally had Ariel defeat Ursula herself. Jeffery Katzenburg had it changed.

My thoughts on whether Ariel should defeat Ursula or not are just...whatever. Just make it work. Just make it good. Make sure Eric is more than just there along with whatever Ariel does and whatever Ariel does make it good.

I tend to think that Disney movies, or any romance for that matter, works best when the characters in the relationship save each other. I’m hoping they find a way to do that, because I do think there’s importance to Eric doing something to show Triton all humans aren’t bad and that he truly cares for Ariel. But I also think Ariel deserves a big moment too.

That's my point. Ariel saves Eric twice in the film. He could save her at least once.

I didn’t know this, or else I forgot. What was the original plan?

So then, what if Eric saves Ariel at one point in the climax but the final coup de grace is reserved for Ariel?

That works too I guess if the character of Eric gets a better writer to work on his arc prior to the climax. I still can't get over that joke of a Phillip we got in Maleficent..

I'm quite happy with the cast especially with Javier for Triton. :D

The jury's still out on most of them for me--will have to see the finished product--except for Tremblay and Awkwafina who I already know will do great. (Not that Tremblay's got a hard part or anything. ) The logo is cute. I doubt it's finished or anything, but I'll like it if it's a more polished version of that.

I’m still unhappy with Melissa McCarthy but I hope she proves me wrong and is better than I expect.

I think Halle Bailey was an inspired choice. I’ve listened to her sing more since she was announced for the role and her voice has an almost hypnotic quality. Jodi Benson has a beautiful voice and I could listen to her read a phone book but Bailey has a siren-like quality that I think will suit the character well also. I’m excited for this remake.

I forget what she was originally going to do, but I feel like it was to grab the trident and use it against Ursula.

I haven't listened to her sing very much, but that siren-quality of Halle you described sounds like it would be perfect!

I quite like the logo too. It's better than most of the ones these remakes get. It's curious; it seems more inspired by the logo for the Broadway musical than by the one for the original film.

Haha.. I just found this picture I put together of my ideal casting back when the film was first announced..
I desperately wanted Rachel Hurd Wood as Ariel and Katie Bates as Ursula.

Love Kevin Zegers, although he's probably too old for a part like this. I remember when Harry Styles was first rumored, I was just meh on him. In retrospect, I wish he'd been cast since he's really grown on me over the past year, especially considering who they ultimately went with.

It's even prettier against a black background like that. I never really understood why the Broadway show's poster / logo had such faded colors.

I like that casting! You know, as long as everyone would be the right ages. It is dream casting, we can dream of what ages they could be!

Even though I am now happy and excited to see Halle Bailey as Ariel, I can't help but still fantasize about Rachel Hurd Wood as our little mermaid as she not only looks like her but also has that enchanting quality about her that we could already witness in Peter Pan (2003).
