I just think it wasn't a very enjoyable movie then really ? That's the only explanation. It wasn't received very well, the reviews were pretty awful ( or just branded it dull ), and it had no buzz about it. There was not one person who I knew who was upset that the release date was pushed back and back, then onto Disney+. I'm sure it will be watched when it's on Disney+ as part of their catalogue, but to pay the additional cost, it was a firm no from me.

And I love the animated Classic Mulan too, this one just wasn't my vibe I don't think.

I haven’t watched it yet, I will buy the 4K this week (which, speaking of, I have to say I was getting worried a physical release would not be coming! They really waited until last minute to announce it). I think obviously the extra price turned a lot of people off and that’s why Soul is not going to “Premiere Access” or whatever they called it. They probably made more money from people paying for a month of Disney+ just to see Hamilton (like I did) than the people who paid $30 for Mulan.

The movie was mired in controversy and received such a tepid response from audiences. When it came out, a co-worker of mine asked the children we worked with if they’d seen the new Mulan and if they liked it. I was surprised so many of them said they didn’t like it. :/

I think the idea of "Premier Acess" is not a terrible one (for the company), but I think that testing it with Mulan was a mistake. Black Widow would have had better results in my opinion.

I don't plan to buy the 4K or Blu-ray of the remake, but I do plan to get the original whenever Amazon lists it (or eBay if it'll be there first). I really hate the process of buying Disney's releases, so frustrating.

Thank you :) but since I'm not from the US my options are very limited and I want the standard slipcover which doesn't seem to be available on Amazon yet and I haven't seen a listing on eBay. I did see the steelbook there but I really just want the standard. The same thing happened to me with The Little Mermaid and I eventually gave in and bought the steelbook. I'm giving it a few more days in hope that it eventually appear somewhere.

I didn't know the original was getting re-released (although it makes sense to time it with the re-make). I love that cover!

Really? I`m sorry to hear about it, DisneyFan97. Do you want to talk about it? Is it because of the pandemic?

I liked the backgrounds and the costumes. I like seeing actors who are new to me— the new love interest was cute, but as a character was pitifully weak compared to Shang. I think the weirdest part of the movie was that it didn’t really feel like a Disney movie. It bears very little resemblance to its predecessor (even Mulan’s name is changed from Fa to Hua) but it’s also darker and has a harder edge. There is a lot of violence. There is a moment when Mulan asks to be executed.

I think I will stick with the 1998 classic.

Then i guess it won't get a Swedish dubb because it isn't really a kids movie ! :(

To give Disney some credit, this film was the first to debut on a streaming service instead of the theater, right? Onward debuted in theaters, then digital, then Disney+, and Trolls: World Tour debuted on digital. Soul isn't costing extra... This is still new territory for Disney and the other companies.

I quite liked it. As a huge musical theatre fan, I never thought Mulan's songs were needed and always felt they were more forced in to keep it in line with other WDAS movies of the same time than to actually serve the story (with the exception of the perfect Reflection - although I'll Make A Man Out of You will make for a amazing ensemble number someday). I missed some moments (I understand why it's probably cheaper to do the finale in daylight and without the whole imperial city watching, but it would look so nice AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DIDN'T HAVE EVERYONE BOWING FOR MULAN. Also missed the transformation scene) but I actually cried, especially when she shed her father's uniform to an epic rendition of Reflection. I was also quite surprised with Xianniang's arc. Could probably be done better with a little bit more screentime, but it was different enough. And Ming-Na :thumb:

Overall, still sad that I didn't get to watch this on a theater. Also interesting how Disney+ and the blu-rays have a version in English of Reflection by Liu Yifei, but they didn't even upload it on Youtube nor released it in any version of the soundtrack rotfl

I really liked it, too. The first fifteen minutes were oddly paced, but the movie eventually found a groove. I was emotionally invested in Mulan's journey, I really enjoyed the action and I liked seeing the ways in which Mulan started becoming a part of the camp. Each soldier she befriended were distinct in personality and even if the villains were fairly standard, Jason Scott Lee and Gong Li brought a lot to the roles and helped make them stand out. I especially loved the final battle and the production values were all excellent.

Best of all, I never found myself comparing it to the animated film, which the best remakes always succeed in doing. The film was able to work on its own terms, although even incorporating the music cues was never distracting and flowed nicely with the score. Thinking about it afterwards, I'm not even sure where the musical numbers or Mushu (the things people were most upset the film left out) could have been added to this version of the story being told. I appreciate the filmmakers for trying to do their own thing and not feeling so beholden to what was already made before.

I guess it's telling that my favourites of these recent Disney remakes are Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp and Cinderella.

Watched this yesterday. I went in with no expectations because of all the negativity surrounding this movie and I have no emotional attachments to the animated film and songs. I liked it. I don't usually watch action movies, so it was cool watching a genre that I'm not really used to choosing. I saw why there were no songs. They wouldn't have fit into this version of the story. Furthermore, I see why Disney charged $30. The movie looked expensive AF! It's a movie that should've been seen on the big screen, especially on IMAX.
