The Owl House

Post by Sotiris »

Disney Television Animation is working on a 2D-animated TV series called "The Owl House". It's set to premiere in 2020 on the Disney Channel. This one seems interesting. It has an anime vibe going on for it.
Executive-produced by Dana Terrace, "The Owl House" is a horror-comedy series that follows Luz, a self-assured teenage human girl who accidentally stumbles upon a portal to the Demon Realm where she befriends a rebellious witch, Eda, and an adorably tiny warrior, King. Despite not having magical abilities, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch by serving as Eda's apprentice at the Owl House and ultimately finds a new family in an unlikely setting.

From “Gravity Falls” and “Duck Tales” veteran Dana Terrace, “The Owl House” is a 2D animated, horror-comedy following a teenage girl who discovers a portal to another realm where humans are not well-liked, and she must disguise herself in order to fit in at witch school. Luz partners with a witch named Eda and her diminutive side-kick, King, who was indeed once a king, and is searching for a way to restore his titles and glory.

“We loved the combination of magic and mystery in this other world,” Kanter told Variety, “But it also had a heart to it that can sometimes be missing in shows that go to other worlds of monsters and goblins. We really fell in love with the main character Luz.”

A “Next time on…” clip was screened which showed Luz and her magical friends struggling to help the novice witch learn the ways of magic. Some friends are more helpful than others. The series is in pre-production, looking to launch in 2020.

Disney's Animated Series The Owl House Now Has a Confirmed Bisexual Character

Dana Terrace wrote:In dev I was very open about my intention to put queer kids in the main cast. I'm a horrible liar so sneaking it in would've been hard haha. When we were greenlit I was told by certain Disney leadership that I could NOT represent any form of bi or gay relationship on the Channel. I'm bi! I want to write a bi character, dammit! Luckily my stubbornness paid off and now I am VERY supported by current Disney leadership. (Thank you Doug Bensimon and team!) Not to mention the amazingness of this crew.

I've been watching this for the first time the past few days. I like it... The only part I can't get over is the setting. I know they don't say this, but with demons and acid rain and all that, this "fantasy" world sure sounds a whole lot like Hell. Eda even casts magic with some evil growth on her heart... It reminds me of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina that way, where it's just hard to root for the character when everything sort of feels evil about the story... On that show, I could sort of still enjoy it until Sabrina signed her soul over; I thought she was going to triumph over Satan and free everyone's souls somehow. Instead she turned out to be the Antichrist.

Still, I'll give it a little more time. I'm trying to think of the "demons" as more similar to the kind of "demon" mythology you see in anime / Japanese mythology than the Christian type. It's a cute show with a story that sort of builds slowly. King is really adorable, but I must be an easy touch with these kinds of plush-in-the-making characters lately. I'd heard lots of praise about the protagonist being bisexual. I've only seen around 7-10 episodes so far (often out-of-order), but I did notice in the episode where Luz is dealing with Amity's troublemaker brother and sister that both the brother and the sister flirt with her at different points and she blushes in response to both of them.

I couldn't help thinking as I watched this that Wendie Malick would've made a great replacement for Petrea Burchard, voice actor for Ryoko, back when she was absent from the final episodes of the Tenchi Muyo! series that were released years later. At least, better than the voice actress they had got (Mona Marshall).

I've come to like this show more and more as I watch it in re-runs. The show just makes me laugh. "Peek-a-hoot! *headbutt*" The Emperor-Edalyn-Lilith definitely have a Wizard of Oz-Elphaba-Glinda dynamic. Something about the animation or the designs rather vaguely reminds me of Daria at moments. Anyway, I think they might be setting up another LGBT relationship with Luz's male friend (I always forget his name, whereas Willow's name is said pretty often). It almost felt as I was watching the episode that gave me that feeling that it was a bit too much like re-creating Luz and Amity, but even so I hope they go through with it. I honestly feel like this show is going to be full of LGBT relationships by the end of this and I'm fine with it. :P

I just wish this show wasn't on Disney Channel. If it was on Cartoon Network, it would get release on DVD in future like most of those shows do. Once they stop re-running this, I won't be able to see it anymore. I'd like to re-watch the Tangled series, but having to load hundreds of YouTube videos is way too much of a pain. I really don't get it when it comes to Disney and not releasing their TV series, it's so insane.

^ I've thought about buying one episode of a show on Amazon, just to see if I can download it somehow and then burn it to a disc. Still, I hate Disney for not putting their shows on DVD at least. Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, etc. don't even have something like Disney Movie Club where they could risk less by making a product that way and they aren't owned by billion-dollar companies, and yet things like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Steven Universe, The Wild Thornberrys, etc. all have DVD releases. It's just sad.

The Owl House definitely gives me a SU vibe, partly because of how it humanizes all of its characters as well* as the LGBT characters. Luz has a similar vibe to Steven, although thankfully her voice isn't as annoying. I like its animation, too, and its story seems to be becoming more interesting as it goes along. Since it seems to be getting re-runned pretty often, I assume it's doing well in the ratings. I could tell the Rapunzel series was struggling when they only ever showed it once a week and never re-ran it. I hope this one stays this good and keeps going, just to have something else to watch.

* A quality I associate with studios like Ghibli and Laika, too.

The new episode had a line of images in a sort of art noveau style, similar to the wall paintings for the Diamonds in Steven Universe. I Googled for the image, and someone screencapped it on deviantart here. They were supposed to be for the Emperor’s Bard Coven (I believe each representing a different spell-path). I think those images may end up representing those who will become Luz’s “team,” too, or it might indicate which friend may encounter / fight which enemy. The mirror one with the two doubles is like Gus, the green one like Willow, the purple one (not the one with the Emperor’s eye, but the other one) like Amity, the yellow one with the creature is like King, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the Emperor's nephew that Luz met becomes one of Luz's allies; King's father (?) that was previewed at the end of this past episode looks sort of like the red banner. With Luz being the one who would deal with the Emperor because she’s the only one who can perform all different kinds of magic the way he does. Or perhaps Luz will become leader at the end of the series with the others being her “bard coven” in a way? I know one episode mentioned that the Emperor could hear Titan’s voice and that’s how he became leader. And then there was the episode where Eda tries to get Luz to listen to the world itself and that’s how she learned the ice spell. I wouldn’t be surprised if Luz eventually hears or speaks to Titan herself.

To the above, I was looking at the Tangled show on Amazon, and buying the whole show would come out to $85 because they split each season into two ‘volumes’… That’s insane.

Sorry for multi-posting. Usually with these kinds of shows, nobody else posts anyway. I read on the Wikipedia page that the show is already confirmed to end with its third season (which will be made up of three 44 minute "movies"). Well, that sucks, I was just starting to get more into it. I'm not surprised that quality shows like this one always seem to go out with a whimper that way, but I thought the show was doing well with how often Disney re-runs it? What a shame. :(

Old article, but I only just read it. So ratings were not a problem. Something about this gives me the same vibe as Blue Sky Studios being shutdown. I think the LGBT characters are the reason for this just like it was there.
