https://twitter.com/patrickadougall/sta ... 64161?s=21MULAN UPDATE:
I’ve been told the $29.99 price point is NOT a timed rental.
Once you pay for it... it’ll remain in your Disney+ account for as long as you’re subscribed to the service w/ unlimited viewings.
https://twitter.com/aliciastella/status ... 27744?s=21To be clear though, those that join Disney+ just to see Mulan and cancel after their first month would then lose it then, right?
https://twitter.com/patrickadougall/sta ... 38592?s=21Idk if “lose” is the right term, but you won’t be able to watch it without an active subscription.
For example: if you buy Mulan and Disney+ for a month and then cancel. You’ll still have Mulan available to you whenever you resubscribe for another month.
Does this also mean Mulan would never join Disney+ as a non-premium title?
Long live physical media. Smh.
Re: Mulan (Live-Action)
What will probably happen is Mulan will cost $30 for the first few months. Then the rental might drop a few months later when it becomes available on physical media (this happened with Scoob and Trolls World Tour) and then around six months later, they will drop the price tier and it becomes just another title on Disney+.UmbrellaFish wrote:Does this also mean Mulan would never join Disney+ as a non-premium title?
This is just complete guesswork on my part, though.

Re: Mulan (Live-Action)
You'd be surprised. The release is already being challenged in Brazil by Claro. Brazilian cable channels need to have a percentage of its programming composed by Brazilian produced shows to promote national production, and so Claro is claiming that streaming services would need to abide to the same law or it would be unfair competition. It wouldn't surprise me if it's released in Latin America*Sotiris wrote:^You will soon. Disney+ will be launching in Latin America this November.

I'd assume so. No theater is gonna boycott Disney when the next 3 Marvel movies comes in and risk losing their share in the next 1bi hitblackcauldron85 wrote:Is Disney too big for movie theaters to boycott them like Universal?

The video went viral and then it was picked up by the mainstream press. Will the controversies for this film ever end?

Re: Mulan (Live-Action)
I'm saddened by this news. All other major titles were pushed back, why not wait another 6 month/a year and let this roll out normally? What a mess. This should have been a $1-1.5B juggernaut. Losers.

It will become part of the free-trier Disney+ after some time. How long after though, we don't know yet.UmbrellaFish wrote:Does this also mean Mulan would never join Disney+ as a non-premium title?

Re: Mulan (Live-Action)
Sad, sad. Mulan is supposed to be a big, event movie. This is one of few times that the US gets to truly represent Asia/ China as a country as well as an important female superhero empowerment movie.
I mean, at least we have Black Widow released in cinemas, but still, very sad.

If only that was enough to encourage Disney to rethink this horrible commercial strategy.. Whether you have interest in this movie or not, that’s an ambiguous way to promote pVOD. Too bad they set their mind this waySotiris wrote:Mulan: Poll Shows Majority Won’t Pay $30 to Rent on Disney+

Re: Mulan (Live-Action)
Now I can so easily imagine Disney making customers pay additional fees to watch “The Mandalorian - Season 2” and the Marvel series.. If they’re in needs for money and that’s what people want to watch, I see no reason for them not to do so.
Re: Mulan (Live-Action)
I think Mulan is a special case since they invested so much in it that they want some of the money back.Clindor wrote:Now I can so easily imagine Disney making customers pay additional fees to watch “The Mandalorian - Season 2” and the Marvel series.. I don't think that will happen with productions that were always intended for D+, but I can see them doing it for their major theatrical films that won't have a chance to be in theaters anymore like Black Widow and Soul. They've lost $5 billion and I don't think they're going to postpone movies anymore cause apparently they have more to lose than to gain.
From what I've read online they only need 15% of subscribers to do that in order to gain their money back and I don't think that's impossible, I'm pretty sure Disney has done the proper research for such a move.

Re: Mulan (Live-Action)
Clearly an overreaction. Mulan, Black Widow, The Eternals... are all huge blockbusters, done with a budget that considered direct and individual gain via movie tickets (just for an idea, the whole season of The Mandalorian cost about half of what it took Mulan - and that's the flagship show for Disney+, where they spend probably more than it was capable of getting back as a way to turn it into an ad for the service). Disney is not a charity, they can't just go around giving access to these expensive movies that haven't paid for themselves yet for like $7 a month along with their whole library. And yet, they're raking in on completed movies and will have even more just sitting in storage between production is allowed to restart and cinemas are able to reopen. Can you just imagine the damage if one of these films leak? How do you even prepare a release schedule in the probably most competitive period in history for screens? Every studio will be putting the movies they have most faith in against each other and finding other ways to sell the movies that probably wouldn't do as good with a heavy competition like the one we're about to see.

The appreciation for “The Mandalorian” is huge, and so it is for Marvel. If they need money to keep investors interested, I do think they could easily change their initial plan, regardless of what was the original concept for Disney+. And what is happening with ‘Mulan’ is imo a huge step to this.

Couldn’t agree more. That summarizes my thoughts.Sotiris wrote:It would be one thing for Disney to release Mulan on PVOD first and after a while put it on Disney+ but having a PVOD section on the service is ridiculous and confusing. Isn't the point of paying for an SVOD service like Netflix or HBO Max that you don't have to pay for titles separately like VOD? So someone who wants to watch Mulan will have to first pay for a Disney+ subscription which costs $7 since they no longer offer a free trial and then pay another $30 to rent the particular title. I think this is unprecedented. I hope this experiment blows up in their faces because it's incredibly greedy and anti-consumer.
pVOD is pVOD, sVOD is sVOD. Two totally different services. Better keep them seperated.
Here, it really feels like Disney trying to make monopolization around Disney+, which still belongs to their old “Empire” approach. At a time of health and economical crisis, I don’t see the point anymore.

Re: Mulan (Live-Action)
I do think $29.99 is a steep price on top of the streaming fee. $19.99 would've felt less greedy, but I understand that this is a risky step for them and they want to make their money back. At the same time, I do feel sorry for theaters who can't simply boycott Disney the way they would other companies that bypass them because Disney has become such an enormous company and the consequences of doing so would probably put them out of business.

Re: Mulan (Live-Action)
Seems to me this would’ve worked better if Disney had just said they were allowing it to be rented or purchased on Movies Anywhere and called it quits. I agree, having a paid section within the app is confusing. I buy all my digital copies through Vudu and Movies Anywhere and now I’m paying $30 to basically add a movie to my Disney+ account but don’t get the digital copy myself? It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.Clindor wrote:Couldn’t agree more.
