Pixar's Soul
Re: Pixar's Soul
To me it's not a matter of theatrical release or not, but rather a matter of which studio made the film, if it's made by WDAS it's part of the canon. If it's made by Pixar it's part of their films. Even Disneytoons released some of their films theatrically and we don't consider them part of the canon.

Well, speaking of:
https://twitter.com/mrRuimy/status/1286427356459139073I was told, via a solid source, that Disney is in the closing stages of totally scrapping the theatrical release for Pixar's SOUL and sending it straight to Disney+ this coming November. The film would still be eligible to contend for Oscars, as per new AMPAS rules.

Re: Pixar's Soul
Soul would still have a Blu release, right, if straight to streaming?!
And farerb, that's true.

You can only imagine what Soul would do on Disney+.

You can also imagine how the theaters will react, if "Trolls World Tour" is any indication: AMC has (or at least had) banned Universal movies from its theaters (which is not a wise move given their financial straits) and has threatened to do likewise to other studios if they bypassed theaters like this.DisneyEra wrote:You can only imagine what Soul would do on Disney+.

All these Pixar fans in the comments I can't... No Pixar is not more important than other studios...

Re: Pixar's Soul
They're not going to debut Soul on Disney+. If they didn't do it for Mulan, they aren't doing it for Soul. They aren't going to sacrifice $200 million movies on the possibility of getting more subscribers. Premiering it on PVOD makes much more sense, but I doubt they'd be willing to do even that. They had high expectations for Soul. It may not have been a billion, but they were definitely anticipating it reaching the $800 million range like Inside Out and Coco. They're not willing to give that up. They will probably delay it. The industry is still clinging to the fantasy that next year things are going to return to normal and they can expect the same profits as before.
Re: Pixar's Soul
I think the same profits as before are not going to happen anymore. People took a financial hit and we are facing worldwide recession that might last for years. People will be less likely to spend money on luxuries like they used to. I won't be surprised if ticket prices drop or worst case scenario no more theaters.
Re: Pixar's Soul
History has shown that plenty of people still go to the theatres during recessions. It's a form of escape for many. The question right now isn't will people go back to theatres, but rather when will they go back? From the way things are going in the United States compared to other places, I expect Asian, European and even Canadian theatres to open up a lot sooner than in the US, which is why Warner Bros is planning an international roll-out for "Tenet" rather than a traditional day-and-date release.
When Disney moved "Artemis Fowl" and "Hamilton" to Disney+, neither were labeled as Disney+ originals like "Noelle" and "Lady and the Tramp" were. Then again, they've also been inconsistent in that regard as "The Longest Daycare" premiered in front of theatrical showings of "Onward" and yet it opens with the Disney+ logo when you watch it on the service. And "Dolphin Reef" opened in France two years ago, but is considered a Disney+ original.blackcauldron85 wrote:^ I would imagine that a movie like Soul, that was always 100% created with the intention of going to theaters, would be in the canon. It brings up the question, though, if studios decide to premiere their films via streaming: How to differentiate something like The Lion King vs. The Lion King 1 1/2, for example. Or does Disney even care to differentiate things like that, since DisneyToons and Pixar Canada are no more...

That's a super good point, about Artemis & Hamilton. I'd definitely imagine that Soul would not be considered a D+ Original.estefan wrote: When Disney moved "Artemis Fowl" and "Hamilton" to Disney+, neither were labeled as Disney+ originals like "Noelle" and "Lady and the Tramp" were. Re: Pixar's Soul
Wasn't the problem with Universal that they said they're looking into releasing movies into home video and cinemas at the same time, given the profit of Trolls? And to be fair, what huge hits does Universal have? Any theatre owner can live on happily without Universal money, but no one risk not being able to show the next Marvel movie by getting in a fight with Disney, for example.Big Disney Fan wrote:You can also imagine how the theaters will react, if "Trolls World Tour" is any indication: AMC has (or at least had) banned Universal movies from its theaters (which is not a wise move given their financial straits) and has threatened to do likewise to other studios if they bypassed theaters like this.DisneyEra wrote:You can only imagine what Soul would do on Disney+.
Re: Pixar's Soul
Disney is gonna have to come up with some kind of release plan, because waiting for Theaters to reopen, there's no timetable for that. The Marvel films I can see, they will hold those out til Theaters reopen because that's their money machine. Star Wars is on hiatus at the moment, but they already competed the Rey trilogy, that actually gives them more time to plan the next phase.rodrigo_ca wrote:Wasn't the problem with Universal that they said they're looking into releasing movies into home video and cinemas at the same time, given the profit of Trolls? So what is Disney going to do with Mulan/Soul? There's no guarantee Theaters are going to be operating this November, even so, are people gonna be comfortable with returning so soon? They can either release one or both on on demand/Disney+, or just cancel ALL 2020 releases all together, & plan a release strategy for 2021, which still isn't a guarantee.
Re: Pixar's Soul
There's no way either of these open in theaters this year. I dont even think they will be released on Disney plus personally. I'm thinking next march seems like the next logical place to put a release date.

Well, they do have Fast and Furious, Jurassic World, and Despicable Me/Minions. Those are all billion dollar franchises.rodrigo_ca wrote:And to be fair, what huge hits does Universal have? Re: Pixar's Soul
^ Minor spoilers in that trailer, beware! Thanks for posting it- it looks really good. I didn't understand a word of it, but I felt it deep in the feels. Watching it, I even wondered, Will Joe just be a soul forever/be dead in the human world, but then we see him in the hospital bed, so probably not. Not that that's a bad thing, of course! Definitely looking forward to it. The poster says 12.11, so that's either December 11th or November 12th, I assume.
