Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 6
Now that audio has leaked of Amber Heard admitting to hitting Johnny Depp, do you think Disney will take him back? It's not that another sequel can't work without him in terms of storytelling, but Disney will have trouble selling it without Jack Sparrow, particularly in foreign markets where Depp remains fairly popular.

Social media is aggressively trending this story. It's gone viral.
If Disney doesn't rehire Depp and WB subsequently drop Heard, then there truly is no justice in the world.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 6
First off, let me start by saying that domestic abuse is a serious thing and it is deeply unfortunate that Johnny Depp appears to not only have been the victim of violence, but also a PR campaign by his abuser to paint him as a monster or the only monster in the relationship. What follows is my take on where his career can realistically go next.
Johnny Depp’s career has been on a downward spiral since at least 2012’s Dark Shadows. The Amber Heard allegations provided a “woke” context for Disney to drop him from the next POTC entry, but with Depp’s star waning and now failing to provide the vaunted box office boost it did in his heyday, not just in the POTC movies but in other Disney movies like Into the Woods and The Lone Ranger, Captain Jack’s days were always numbered. This trend predates the Heard allegations and is unlikely to turn around now.
Assuming that public sympathies are now firmly on Depp’s side, it may earn him enough good will to return to the Hollywood fold in a big way. His status as a major box office draw is probably forever lost (it usually is once it’s gone) and his parts in major blockbusters were always criticized for being too derivative of one another (“He just plays the eccentric”). In the immediate future, he’d probably fare best by focusing on Oscar bait, highlighting his overdue status— and if not winning the big prize, at least scoring a nom or two. Let one or two Pirates movies pass him by and then return to the franchise cashing in on newfound industry goodwill and nostalgic audiences clamoring for his return to a beloved role in a popular movie series with a fat pay cheque as his reward.
However it plays out, I wish him the best.

Yes, I hope Depp is returned and PotC6 recommences. Even if it's the last in the series, that's already what I expected anyway and it would be better than a reboot.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 6
Love her, love the idea but I’m not sure it’s what I hoped for. To me the only good pirates movies is Curse of the Black Pearl. And that’s because it is a ghost story and a romance. The latter movies lose all of that. High romance, swashbuckling, and less Jack Sparrow made for a more balanced story. And to me, Pirates was always about ghosts. Not sea monsters. Not mermaids. Not anything else. Karen could easily lead a franchise, and I don’t mind the idea of her leading this one. I just don’t need a female Jack Sparrow being the lead.blackcauldron85 wrote:I still am unsure of how legit this site is but:

I only know her as her character from Guardians of the Galaxy. I've seen Oculus, too, but I don't remember her in that. I guess she'd be fine? I don't have that much of an impression of her.
Yeah, Black Pearl is still the best one, but I like Dead Man's Chest and Dead Men Tell No Tales, too.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 6
Source: https://thedisinsider.com/2020/05/05/pi ... male-lead/According to insider Daniel Richtman, studio is in fact going the reboot route, and are currently looking for a female lead, and one name at the top of Disney’s list to lead the reboot is Avengers: Endgame and Jumanji: The Next Level star Karen Gillan. This is something I can also confirm as I’ve heard rumblings of Gillan as early as last fall. As of now, it is unknown if the actress has had any formal talks with the studio, but the studio is definitely interested.
Another tidbit I hear is that the studio is also considering women of color for the role. Character and story details are being kept under wraps. Though fan speculation will go wild now that Gillan’s name has been mentioned, there could be a possibility that the film will look to be centered on Redd, the popular female pirate featured in the Disney Parks attraction and is a meet-and-greet character.
Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 6
Karen Gillan has a charisma of a log, IMO. She's wooden and robotic in everything I've seen her in, and while that works for Nebula, it's not something you want from someone who's supposed to carry a whole franchise.
The whole reboot idea is terrible anyway, because the 5th movie ended teasing the return of Davy Jones. I wish studios would stop doing crap like that if there are no concrete plans of continuing the franchise, just tell a self-contained story and be done with it. Even the 4th movie had the same issue with the post-credits scene featuring Penelope Cruz's character.
But if Disney is so adamant on rebooting the series and/or bringing new faces in, then why not reintroduce Gillan's MCU sister Zoe Saldana as Anamaria? At least we know she can act.

Yeah, I didn't want to say anything bad about the woman. She was serviceable in GotG, GotG Vol. II, and Avengers: Infinity War (still haven't seen Endgame sadly), but definitely no standout...? Them being set on her of all actors out there seems really random unless she's related to or dating someone at Disney?

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 6
Gillan has a major role in the Jumanji movies, which have been enormously successful. Admittedly, she wasn't the principal reason those films did so well, but having a starring role in a series of successful blockbuster movies does often lead to job offers in other big tentpoles.
My knowledge of Doctor Who is extremely minimal, but isn't her run on that show widely liked? Besides the Doctor, Amy Pond is the only other character I can name on the show.

If they want a redhead actress to play Redd, I'd rather see Bryce Dallas Howard or Jessica Chastain, both far superior actresses. And they really should reconsider rebooting/remaking the series without Johnny Depp now that it's widely known that he was innocent and already there's talks of Amber Heard being fired from Aquaman 2 and even going to jail.

Personally I would prefer Eleanor Tomlinson.. excellent actress that could carry the rol...Jessica Chastain would also be great but perhaps a bit old?

Source: https://collider.com/pirates-of-the-car ... uckheimer/“We’re working on a draft right now and hopefully we’ll get it shortly and give it to Disney and hopefully they’ll like it,” Bruckheimer said. “We don’t know. We’ve been working on it for a little bit.” When asked about Depp’s role, Bruckheimer was cagey. “The one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be,” Bruckheimer said. “So, we’re going to have to see.”

If this is a reboot, why would Depp be in it? I wish they'd scrap this and make PotC6 like originally planned now the allegations against Depp have been debunked.

I think that Deep has to be in this new movie. They can incorporate new characters and include Deep with a small role. Is it going to be a soft reboot at last?

Margot Robbie, Christina Hodson Re-Team for New 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Movie for Disney (Exclusive)
I think Margot Robbie is a great choice to reboot the franchise with! I wonder if she will be playing “Redd” or an original character?
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat- ... ie-1298722Margot Robbie is setting sail with help from her Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson.
Hodson has been tapped to write a new, female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean for Disney, with Robbie attached to star.
While plot details are being kept in Davey Jones’ locker, the project, in early development, is not intended to be a spinoff of the long-running franchise that had pirate Jack Sparrow at its center but rather a wholly original story with new characters under the Pirates moniker, itself inspired by the long-running attraction at Disneyland.
The new project is said to be separate from the already announced reboot of the popular franchise that has Pirates scribe Ted Elliott and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin developing the story.
Longtime Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer is attached to produce both the Elliot/Mazin project and this new Robbie/Hodson project.
Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most lucrative film franchises of all time, grossing over $4.5 billion on five feature films. But the Pirates franchise, fronted by Johnny Depp, has shown diminishing returns as of late, with the fifth installment, 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales, coming in with the second lowest box office of the series ($795 million, unadjusted worldwide) only ahead of original film Curse of the Black Pearl. The studio has been plotting ways to revive the brand, with stories from new talent.
Hodson is one of Hollywood's go-to blockbuster writers, with credits that include Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, as well as DC superhero projects The Flash, which now has Michael Keaton reprising his famous role of Batman, and Batgirl.
Robbie's recent features include Bombshell and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and she will next be seen in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad sequel.
In addition to collaborating on Birds of Prey, Robbie and Hodson together in 2019 launched the Lucky Exports Pitch Program, a new initiative aimed at getting more female-identifying writers hired by studios to write action-centric movies.
Robbie is repped by CAA, Management 360, AMM, and attorney Jeff Bernstein of Jackoway Austen. Hodson is repped by Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 6
The report says that this project is separate from the reboot and both of them are moving forward. My understanding is that this female-led Pirates will be an entirely new adaptation of the ride with no ties to the existing film series whereas the soft reboot, aka Pirates 6, will probably be male-led and will preserve continuity with the previous entries.UmbrellaFish wrote:I think Margot Robbie is a great choice to reboot the franchise with! You’re right, I did not read the report carefully. In a way, it reminds me of the standalone “A Star Wars Story” movies.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 6
Hasn't Margot Robbie been labeled box office poison? Not too many of her films become successful and Birds of Prey especially was a flop.
