What makes Fantasia 2000 a sequel and not a remake or a film which was inspired by the original Fantasia?

Though I didn't like Frozen 2 much myself, I know you're a big Frozen fan, Disney's Divinity, so I'm glad the sequel didn't disappoint you.

Thanks! I know I was probably more acclimated to the sequel than others would be. I didn’t love it as much as the first, I’ll admit, but I never expected they could match it; I don't think fairy tales lend themselves so easily to sequels as, say, something like Zootopia would. I tried to go into it and enjoy it for what it was. Unsurprisingly, I thought the scene from the trailer where Elsa is trying to conquer the waves was the peak. That scene all the way through the end of “Show Yourself” was the best part for sure.

My only thought was that the film should’ve been a little longer actually—anywhere from ten minutes to half an hour. That would’ve gave the story points more breathing room. It’s a shame animated films are more restrictive about run time than live-action films. As far as the original characters, I liked the spirits, Ryder, and Mattias. It's funny that this forum talked so much about Honeymaren, and she ended up being a non-entity even compared to the other original characters. Elsa definitely got the spotlight this time, which makes sense with Anna having got the majority of screentime in the first film. And Anna becoming queen didn't feel as weird as I thought it would going into it knowing that's what would happen. I actually thought what happened with both sisters felt right. Elsa was happiest in the first film when she was off on the mountain and away from the confines of her position; Anna wanted so much just to be around people and doing something at the beginning of the first film, and now she's the center of everything.

When the memo parodying the titles for their library of Disney films came out because of The Great Mouse Detective's title change, the package films and Pooh were all not included.

Not to change the subject, but it always bothers me that they couldn't have come up with something for The Aristocats on that memo!

For The Fox and the Hound poster which showed their previous Disney films, only three package films were featured while Pooh was not. The Fox and the Hound was referred to as the 20th Disney film, and going by the poster, that means that Saludos Amigos, The Three Cabelleros, Melody Time, and Pooh were all excluded.


Grolier's "Magic Memories" line of Disney figurines also skipped Pooh (and the package films).

It's crazy that only 4 years later The Black Cauldron was advertised as the 25th! And I could have SWORN I've seen either a Magic Memories or Musical Memories figurine of Pooh & friends.

It's not a remake...that'd be completely re-doing the original shorts, in my opinion.

I agree that fairy tales don't tend to lend themselves to sequels as well as other genres. I didn't expect it to be at the level of the first film either. And by the time of the release, after knowing more about the story and hearing about the lukewarm reviews, my expectations were quite low. However, I was still left disappointed. I thought at least the story would make a bit more sense and things would be explained better. That was my biggest issue with the movie. Maybe that could've been solved if, as you said, the runtime was longer, or if they've had more time to work on the story. Anyway, I think there were many good things in it too and I liked to spend more time with the characters. I still need to rewatch it and give it a second chance, but I haven't felt like watching it again yet. I've even doubted whether to purchase it on Blu-ray or not, which is something that hadn't happened to me since Chicken Little. I guess I'll do it, but when there's some special offer and I can get it at a better price.

Well, it's true that it's not a conventional sequel. It's not a continuation of the stories in the first film and the only character that appears in both films is Mickey. But, as blackcauldron85 said, it's not a remake either because, though it clearly follows the same idea and structure of the original; the stories, the characters, and even the musical pieces are new. Personally, I see it more like a second chapter in a series of films. Speaking of that, I think the title is a clever way for having the "2" of the sequel in the title and at the same time saying it's the Fantasia for a new generation.

I do that with a lot of the films since hand-drawn animation ended the first time with Home On the Range. I still need to pick up Meet the Robinsons, Zootopia, and Winnie the Pooh when I find them at a low price. The only reason I already have Moana is because I got it free from my DMC membership. Frozen, Frozen II, and The Princess and the Frog were the only films I bought as soon as I could (although admittedly TP&TF was the only one I paid full price for... ). And some I'm not sure I'll ever buy (Chicken Little, Wreck-It Ralph and sequel, Bolt, Big Hero 6, etc.).

Funny, but I'm usually in more of a hurry to buy soundtracks than the films themselves, probably because a CD's cheaper than a Blu-ray. I got TP&TF's, Tangled's, Frozen's, Frozen II's, Moana's, and Ralph Breaks the Internet's soundtracks immediately. Even with the re-makes, I picked up B&tB-LA's and Aladdin-LA's soundtracks much earlier than the films themselves.

Yes. You can listen to music while doing other things simultaneously. Something that can't be done with films. Like at work, we can just put headphones and listen to the soundtracks. I also buy soundtracks of films I like.

That's right. Plus, I use music as part of my atmosphere and mood. If I was trapped on an island and only had the choice of either having a TV or having a music player, I'd choose music because I don't think I could live without it. It helps me relieve my emotions and get them out of me a lot of times.

Well, me too. In the 90's and early 2000's, whenever I could, I used to buy the new movies the first day they were released on home video. Now, though, I usually wait until there's a 2x1 offer, and I can get two movies for the price of one. Especially because I always want the edition with more extras, and here in Spain lately they usually come in a steelbook and are quite expensive.

Regarding soundtracks, I usually only buy the ones from the Disney films that are musicals. As for the rest, I just listen to them on Youtube or Spotify and download some of the songs from them I like. And I know this is weird, but I've never gotten used to listen to music while doing other things. When I listen to music, I like to focus all my attention on it. Even when I'm listening to just score. Maybe it's partly because I'm not good at doing two things at the same time. I've never even listened to music while driving, for instance.

^I think Skippy is a good guess. Thumper doesn't cry, so probably not him. Although it's weirdly specific to rabbits, maybe the forest animals in Snow White as well, but I think you're right with Skippy!
