I like the arrangement of the characters here much better. The squirrel addition to that other cover would've been perfect if it had been on Kronk's other shoulder.
D82 wrote:1. The Ultimate Groove Edition: This is my favorite too. I think it was a great idea to make it all gold with Incan motifs, like Kuzco's palace in the movie.
Yes, I agree, it's a perfect look for this movie.

I've seen Dinosaur several times over the years (and it was one of the Blu-rays I decided to get free from the Disney Movie Club as part of my membership). I always liked Della Reese as a child, which probably made me more fond of it at a young age than it rightly deserves. :P I also became a fan of Alfre Woodard starting from Desperate Housewives and Joan Plowright is fun in everything she's ever been in, which gives the film more value. I didn't know until I was much older that Samuel Wright played the villain actually--he does a great job, too!

Marce82 wrote:2) DMC tin: I really like this one. All characters on model, well rendered, fun layout. I would buy this cover. This maybe should be my #1.... cause this is a fun, colorful film, and the secondary characters are NOT secondary at all. They should be on the cover...
That's true. Though it's Kuzco's story, the other three characters don't have much less screen time than him. I agree that they should be on the cover as well.
Marce82 wrote:5) New Groove ed: layout is ok... not great. Something about the villains' poses says "saturday morning cartoon"... and it doesn't quite fit. They also forgot to shade Izma's bottle. The background looks like a random haze... why is Kuzco looking in that direction? Characters are mostly well drawn... except: WHAT IS UP WITH IZMA'S LEFT HAND??? Did she get in trouble with the mob and they broke all her fingers???
 Yeah, the hand looks horrible. I guess it's because they used the same clipart of her from other covers, but modified the hands to create this new pose. The same happens with Kronk; his hands look different from each other.
Marce82 wrote:Pardon my ignorance... but the UK Ultimate Groove... what is the difference with the American release, other than the outline of the title card and the fact that it is placed a little lower???
Yeah, there's not a big difference between the two.

Marce82 wrote:Wait: did we skip Fantasia 2000???? I don't think we did it together with the original one...
I regret not putting Fantasia 2000 with the original one cause we already had all of its covers discussed back then except the DVD one where it's on its own. I want to do a single thread with all the films that have only one cover, which are Treasure Planet - Meet the Robinsons and I thought I'd add the single cover of Fantasia 2000 there. But what's everyone's opinion on the matter?
I thought we had discussed the two films together in Fantasia's week, but it's true; it was just the Fantasia covers and the 2-movie collections. I think you should do Fantasia 2000 next instead of Dinosaur, farerb. Apart from the covers JeanGreyForever showed, there are also a couple more I found, plus more Fantasia + Fantasia 2000 combo packs. I'll send you the links, so you can post them all together in the same post. And it's not too late for posting the two movies together; you can add the Fantasia covers again if you want.

The other movies you mentioned also have at least one or two more international covers. I'll search for them and send you the links as well soon so you can know how many there are for each film and decide whether to post more than one in the same week or not.

By the way, I'm glad to hear you plan to continue with the Pixar films and some live-action movies next. It'll be fun to discuss them! :D

Interesting that they re-drew it rather than simply moving the pieces around like all the other versions that imitated the U.S. VHS cover.

@farerb - will you ever consider doing cover arts for the Star Wars films as well? I'd love to discuss The Last Jedi since I adored the marketing campaign for that film.

Yeah, exactly. I don't understand why they can't find better artists to do some of the covers.

Thanks for sharing! I didn't know these demo tapes existed. Does anyone know if they still make them, but on DVD or Blu-ray? I guess that was the preliminary cover then, right? Like Disney's Divinity pointed out, it's interesting that they modified some of the faces/poses for the final cover. I guess that explains why Kronk isn't completely on-model there.

I've also found the "positioning guide" for the final cover and the original drawings for Kuzco's and Yzma's poses:

Also, this concept art by Michael Hobson. Though I'm not sure it was for a home video cover. Most likely it was for a poster or a book cover.

Am I crazy, or it that preliminary cover better than the original? They all have more interesting expressions and are a wee bit more on-model.

The one minus is that Kuzco is looking in that strange direction again.

It's funny: the bag under his eye looks so much more natural in the preliminary cover.

Pacha and Kronk definitely look better in the preliminary cover.

I agree that the preliminary cover looks better. It's interesting they originally had Yzma holding a potion bottle and strange that no cover ever did highlight that story point.

I'm glad to hear that. Also any chances for Anastasia since it is officially under the Disney brand now and has countless covers that rival even some of the most popular Disney titles when it comes to sheer numbers?

Well... maybe after Pixar covers we can do Disney-owned non-disney animation... so Nightmare Before Christmas, anything they acquired from the Fox purchase... even the Myazaki films they distributed.

Anastasia isn't under the Disney brand, it is just owned by the Disney company.

I personally prefer the final cover because, in my opinion, the arrangement of the characters is slightly better there, but I agree with what you said about them.
Disney's Divinity wrote:It's interesting they originally had Yzma holding a potion bottle and strange that no cover ever did highlight that story point.
In the New Groove Edition she's holding the potion bottle too, but it's the only other cover in which it appears.

Regarding future movies to discuss, personally I'm especially interested in the Pixar films and the Disney live-action/animation hybrids like Mary Poppins or Bedknobs and Broomsticks, but other selected live-action movies from Disney could be also fun to do, like for example, The Chronicles of Narnia, Pirates of the Caribbean or the remakes of animated films. However, I'm not so interested in movies from other studios acquired by Disney. Though I like Anastasia or some of the movies from Blue Sky, I'll never see them as Disney films. But if others want to discuss them, it's fine by me. :)

Oh, you're right, D82! I would love to do Mary Poppins, Bedknobs & Broomsticks, PotC, Narnia, Hocus Pocus (although I think most of those covers are the same...), and TNBC.

I only really like the original DVD/VHS, out of the ones that are strictly Fantasia 2000, and I only rank the one film, not it bundled with others. I must say, that despite not ranking the bundled ones, I love that French Anthology Edition, too.

These are all great, imo:
1. French Collector’s Edition
2. Anthology Collection
3. UK DVD/VHS
4. Original DVD/VHS
5. French Anthology Edition
6. Australian VHS

These three are okay…:
7. French Heroes Cover ~ I like that got Mickey’s dancing pose, but something about the colors feels like a coloring book.
8. UK Heroes Cover
9. French 2-Movie Collection

Hate these:
10. French Heroes Cover (Original Fantasia)
11. Japanese Blu-ray
12. UK 2-Movie Collection
13. Blu-ray
