But I also agree to say this is probably TOO SOON. Disney shouldn’t encourage people to go out if the pandemic is still making new victims whether the worst of it is globally passed or not.

Well she looks cool indeed, that doesn't mean she is well written.. I really hope she is though!! That would make a nice switch compared to other Disney remakes standards.

It's so weird to imagine a film being delayed so long with it already being finished (although it's definitely happened before and I read that's what happening with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in its thread). Personally, I hope that doesn't happen with Mulan. I'm ready to get this over with already.

If it was delayed a whole year, I wonder if Disney would start working on a sequel in that year while they wait on the first to be released? Maybe that's part of the reason they want to get it out this year, so they can see whether they can make a franchise of it or not. I don't know, is Shang-Chi expected to be a franchise-starter itself or simply a one-off film?

I've seen some theorise that Disney wants to release "Mulan" in July, because that's when they think China will return to normal and they want to release in most major markets at around the same time.

The problem is that doesn't take into account the backlog of Chinese movies still waiting to release and which will be given top priority over the Hollywood titles. There were a bunch of movies that were supposed to be released for the Chinese New Year (the busiest time for moviegoing), which ended up not opening, because of the coronavirus outbreak. A few decided to go straight-to-streaming, but there are still others left unreleased. That's not even mentioning the Chinese films originally scheduled from February until now.

Any movie begins with a vision. It’s the director’s job a) to have that vision and b) to communicate it clearly and effectively. My first task on this movie was to articulate my vision for Mulan in a presentation for the studio. I was given a couple of months and some truly exceptional people to help me, not the least of them the extraordinary Jane Wu. Storyboard artist, martial artist, all around badass, and a true modern Mulan, Jane was invaluable in helping me design and articulate some of the most stunning action sequences in the movie. When I look at these boards I see passion and determination - Mulan’s, Jane’s, and my own. FYI these shots are virtually unchanged in the final movie.

So a number of you have asked for more detail, so I’m going all the way back to the beginning. I met with Disney in December 2016. It was a nail-biting few months before I was told I had the job. That day was March 12 2017. I was in San Francisco, en route to Warsaw, Poland for the premiere of The Zookeeper’s Wife. The hotel I was staying in had a bar. In the bar was a pool. In the pool was a boat. In the boat was a band. Every half hour or so there is a tropical storm, courtesy of special fx thunder and lighting and a light, tropical rain... proving it is indeed a strange and beautiful world, even if all these things feel like from another time.

So yesterday I went all the way back to my original notes from my very first meeting with Disney. They are dated 12/14/16... And although building any movie requires real flexibility, creativity, and openness to new and better ideas, it’s amazing to me how often the earliest instincts make it all the way to the final film.

The director hinted at it in January while doing press for the film.

Honestly, I haven't thought about it. I can't tell you how much of my brain and my soul and my spirit is invested in Mulan. And I've been working on it every moment of the day for almost three years. I got the job on the 12th of March three years ago and I've given everything to that. I haven't thought any further ahead to other Disney properties than that... Except maybe another Mulan.
