Wow. So you guys are ok with kids getting chopped into firewood or turned into donkeys for disobeying their parents or not going to school.

Nope...I think the lessons are more "Scared Straight" tactics. Or "step on a crack, break your mother's back:" If you don't do it, she's safe, if you do do it, there's a 50/50 chance her back will be broken, so just don't do it!

It's just the moral. Don't skip school, don't run away with strangers, or else bad things will happen. Obviously the story is over-the-top, but it's to drive home the message.

Who would? We love the cinematic value of the film; the drama, the artistry, the acting, and the music, but not the idea of an innocent child getting pummeled by the real world.

That was amazing! Maybe you guys already knew this stuff from bonus features I never watched, but it's so cool they finally figured out how to design Pinocchio by making a puppet out of a real boy! And that they took so long to make the water and other effects fit with the character animation! No wonder this is such a masterpiece!

Pinocchio was one of the last Walt Disney classics that I actually saw in the theater. I saw it for the first time during its 1978 rerelease along with The Small One. I adored it and immediately bought the soundtrack album.


I’m so glad I got to experience all the Walt era classics on the big screen. I wish today’s Disney would bring back the classics for 2 or 3 showings nationwide (not just Hollywood and Orlando) several times a year as TCM does. For example I’d love to see Anniversary screenings this year of Snow White, Bambi, Fun and Fancy Free, Old Yeller, In Search of the Castaways, The Jungle Book, The Rescuers, Aladdin and Hercules.

Maybe (it’s a point of view that needs to be confirmed) showing moral decay and hellish punishments was seen as a way to divert people from misbehavioring, typical of the Puritan Anglo-saxon mentality and of course very strange (I add, twisted and perverse) for the French (and Latin/Catholic) one. I could compare it with a (softer) scene of Dumbo, when the baby elephant becomes sick and delirious after drinking a bucket of champagne.

"Jackass" isn't explicitly mentioned, and it probably wouldn't have been considered a "profane or vulgar expression". The KJV uses "ass" freely, after all, and "jackass" is even further divorced from any suggestion of buttocks.

Growing up, this was always a favorite because I thought all children should aspire to achieve the innocence of Pinocchio. He is not crass like the youth of today, always cussing and smoking with weird hair, bodily piercings, and tattoos. This is what American youth was like and it embodied a whole generation. I wish today we could embrace these wholesome family values again so I advise all parents to show their children this classic. I also recommend reading the book because that has even more morals which could not fit in the movie.
