Re: Disney to bring stage “Hamilton” to cinemas 2021
We’ve known the original cast of Hamilton was filmed on Broadway for sometime now and we knew the producers were sitting on the project before distributing it.
Obviously, Disney and Miranda have a close working relationship but I thought some of the material and language of the musical would preclude it from joining the Disney brand. Expect it to join Disney+ after its cinema run.
Obviously it isn’t a movie musical adaptation, but Disney just scored the distribution rights to the filmed version of the hottest property on Broadway.
Deadline reports Disney paid $75 million for worldwide distribution rights to the finished film:

Re: Disney to bring stage “Hamilton” to cinemas 2021
Well, this came out of the blue. Hamilton isn't what you call family-friendly, so it's surprising it will be released under the Disney banner. Releasing it under 20th Century Studios would have made more sense. People expected Warners or Netflix to get the rights considering they're distributing In the Heights and Tick, Tick...Boom!, respectively. I guess they didn't take into account how much of a Disney fanboy Lin is. Disney spending $75 million for the rights is way too much. If this was a movie version, I'd understand, but I think they're overestimating the interest in a filmed version of the stage production. People who are interested in that have already watched the various bootlegs. We'll see if it was worth it when it hits theaters.
Given this news, I fully expect LMM to be named a Disney Legend at the D23 Expo next year. They've made people Disney Legends with fewer credits and it would be good cross-promotion for Hamilton and his next WDAS musical which are being released that year.
These are his Disney credits, as far as I know:
The Odd Life of Timothy Green
Moana
Mary Poppins Returns
The Little Mermaid
DuckTales
Modern Family
Fosse/Verdon
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Hamilton
New WDAS musical

I don't know about that when even Tom Hanks wasn't named a Disney Legend.

The award is really about what projects coincide with each ceremony and how they can use it to promote them. It doesn't matter who's worthy or not.

great! I will probably never be able to afford a show so Id love to see this. I enjoyed the one made for Les Miz years ago.
Im surprised they are releasing a film recording for it so soon though, I thought those weren't usually done until long after the shows have been running for years.

Re: Disney to bring stage “Hamilton” to cinemas 2021
I can see this being successful. A lot of people who have heard the buzz around the show, but haven't gotten a chance to watch it on stage, will want to check this out. That's why Lin-Manuel Miranda is doing this. He wants to give people an affordable way of seeing "Hamilton." And a professionally recorded version of the show will definitely beat any bootleg, which often have subpar sound and are filmed by somebody sitting in the cheap seats with barely a good look at the stage.
I think the $75 million is mostly Disney throwing Netflix money, as this will be a major get for their streaming service.

But if the recording was already done, why release it so late? Why not now?
Re: Disney to bring stage “Hamilton” to cinemas 2021
The reasoning I've read is that they're waiting for the current tour to finish its run. The show will also be premiering in Toronto this month and is set to come to Sydney, Australia next year.

What did Les Mis do? I thought they just released two concert versions?unprincess wrote:great! I will probably never be able to afford a show so Id love to see this. I enjoyed the one made for Les Miz years ago.

I’m surprised Disney hasn’t done a recording of their past Broadway shows like Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast or Aida. The only one I recall them doing is Newsies.

Re: Disney to bring stage “Hamilton” to cinemas 2021
oh I think it was an anniversary concert, it gets aired a lot on PBS. At the end they got a lot of the cast from the past productions together to sing some of the songs. Its an awesome show! It helps that I had read the book for my literature high school class, so I was familiar with the story.Disney Duster wrote:What did Les Mis do? Ive also seen parts of Phantom of the Opera, but have never been able to sit down and watch the whole thing. I did see a full filmed production of Cats once, also on PBS, I thought it was kinda weird.

Um, it's a recording of a live performance, so I don't understand how Lin would be re-writing, unless the author meant dubbing over the offensive words? The article writer wrote:Miranda’s idea to straight-up mute some of the words without rewriting any of his show does, indeed, feel like it might be the best version of the “Disney has to censor Hamilton” reality we’re all about to live in.

Re: Disney to bring stage “Hamilton” to cinemas 2021
I'd rather it be muted than dubbed, though I don't understand why they don't put it in Hulu in the first place. Here lies the problem with Disney Plus. They want to protect the brand but they also want to put there content they know people would want to watch in order to get more subscribers, even if that content doesn't fit.blackcauldron85 wrote:^Um, it's a recording of a live performance, so I don't understand how Lin would be re-writing, unless the author meant dubbing over the offensive words? The article writer wrote:Miranda’s idea to straight-up mute some of the words without rewriting any of his show does, indeed, feel like it might be the best version of the “Disney has to censor Hamilton” reality we’re all about to live in.

^ Oh this is going to be a Disney+ premiere? I was under the impression that it'd be theatrical.

No, you're right. I forgot. Then I don't understand why it's not released under 20th Century Studios.blackcauldron85 wrote:^ Oh this is going to be a Disney+ premiere? I was under the impression that it'd be theatrical.

Re: Disney to bring stage “Hamilton” to cinemas 2021
^ That's actually a really good point. But it sounds like, from just reading that short interview with Lin, that they're trying to reach the whole family market (to make as much $$$ as they can), so maybe it'd be good to be released under Disney, so that kids that otherwise wouldn't be able to see the show can see it...?
