The Lion King has been nominated along with Green Book and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for Best Foreign Feature at the Golden Eagle Awards, the Russian equivalent of the Oscars.

The Lion King has received 5 nominations for the VES (Visual Effects Society) Awards. It's tied with Alita: Battle Angel for most nominations in the photorreal feature categories. I guess Disney is happy that the film has been considered for these categories and not for the animated feature ones.

Toy Story 4 also got 5 nominations and is the most nominated film in the animated feature categories.

Early tests were done with the animals showing some emotion, but they were instructed that the film shouldn't look like a cartoon
That is... literally the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

Rocket Raccoon shows more emotion in whatever scenes he’s in in the MCU films, but does he look like a “cartoon”? No, he just looks like he’s actually alive.

Rocket Raccoon is a caricatured, anthropomorphic animal. Not at all comparable to the naturalistic look the remake was going for.

Hm. You know DisneyJedi, I wonder if they could have pulled off something like Rocket Raccoon. I never even realized he was more caricatured than The Lion King remake animals.

The Lion King has been nominated for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars 2019. No song nomination for Beyoncé. Elton John must be laughing right now!

"Never Too Late" wasn't nominated either, was it?

But his song from the Rocketman was. Had Elton written Nala's song, it would have stood a higher chance of getting nominated or even win, in my opinion. The problem wasn't that Beyonce wanted to get an Oscar; she could have pursued that by writing the lyrics and have Elton write the music like Taylor Swift did with Andrew Lloyd Webber for Cats. Instead she was completely dismissive and disrespectful of him by bringing her own songwriting team and enforcing them on the project.

The official social media accounts for Disney Japan are erroneously claiming The Lion King was nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars. Someone from Disney HQ must have sent them the wrong materials. They must have thought they had the second nomination in the bag.

I don't think it was really Beyoncé's fault, but probably Disney being dismissive of Elton (not allowing him to have any say in the way the songs would be used and performed and not allowing him to write any new songs for the film save for Never Too Late) and I'm actually glad it burned up in their faces. Rather amusing.

I'm sure someone knows the answer so I won't attempt searching: Have any of the songs from the remakes won Best Song at the Academy Awards?

No, and none of them have been nominated either (unless you count Mary Poppins Returns). The next in line with the potential to do so is Cruella which will probably have an original end credits song and The Little Mermaid remake.

^Thank you for the quick reply! That's interesting... (and I personally don't count MPR as a remake) I get that they have to be prepared (no pun intended), in case they are nominated, no matter the odds, but it's super sloppy to release the wrong awards promotion material.

Lol, Disney has done a really shoddy job of releasing material for Oscar nominations between the mess-up here and with Frozen II.

I'm glad we have someone in Disney criticizing the film.
