Honestly, I kind of think Frozen 2 getting snubbed is... well...
That’s not really fair, in my opinion.

I'm fine with it. While I liked the film (mostly because I like the characters, the music and animation), I didn't think it was a good film. The plot was all over the place.

Due to the Fox acquisition, Disney is getting more Oscar love than usual.

I'm really shocked Frozen II didn't get a nomination.

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2019
wow I'm really shocked!
I wonder if its due to the criticism that's been going around for a while that they have won the award too many times and that it was all fixed. Which they seem to try to rectify last year with Spider-man winning the award.
I worry though b/c despite its flaws it was a real attempt by them to make a more mature animated film. I worry that Disney will see this and feel that making the movie too serious and dark is what lost them the nom. And they will see to it that future animated films never stray too risky or mature territory, which would be a shame.
Or maybe they just didn't want to nominate 2 Disney sequels and decided to give it to Toy Story 4. I haven't seen TS4 yet(I know, I need to get around to it) so I cant judge whether it was better than F2.
OTOH, I am THRILLED that Klaus got a nom!

Frozen II has made over $1.3 billiion and counting. Disney's going to be fine.
I don't think Frozen II not getting nominated is necessarily a slight against the movie. It was just a really competitive year for the category. Klaus is extremely popular with animators, I Lost My Body has the prestige factor (it already won an award at the Cannes Film Festival) and Laika is always nominated whenever they come out with a new movie. With three sequels in serious contention for spots, one of them was bound to miss out. It just happened to be Frozen II.
I think it's neat that that we have two CG nominees, two hand-drawn nominees (both distributed by Netflix, interesting enough) and a stop-motion film. It's a good slate of contenders.

Which is hilarious when you think of films like WIR, WIR2, BH6, Tangled.... No way Frozen II is worse than those films. Awards shows are such a joke.farerb wrote:Also this is the first time a WDAS film wasn't nominated since Winnie the Pooh.
Anyway, I do hope Missing Link wins out of these 5.
Yes, it creates a nice illusion of diversity.estefan wrote:

I don't think Frozen II was all that, but it was a good bit better than Toy Story 4 and deserved the nomination more, IMO.
Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2019
I'm really glad Klaus was nominated! Regarding Frozen 2, I actually thought there were too many sequels among the favorites this year and that one of them could end up not getting the nomination, but I imagined the How to Train Your Dragon sequel was more likely to be left out than Frozen 2. Honestly, I'm glad it wasn't nominated. I haven't seen I Lost my Body yet, but in my opinion all the other nominees are better than Frozen 2.Sotiris wrote:The Oscar nominations are out. Frozen 2 was snubbed!I'm glad Klaus made the cut! This makes HTTYD the only trilogy to have been nominated for an Oscar in this category. We'll see if the inevitable Incredibles 3 will be able to repeat this feat.
I hope Disney doesn't arrive to that conclusion, but to the right one, that they shouldn't make sequels unless they really have a good and coherent story to tell. However, their main goal is to make money and Frozen 2 has been so successful, that I doubt they'll learn any lesson from this.unprincess wrote:I worry though b/c despite its flaws it was a real attempt by them to make a more mature animated film. Tangled wasn't nominated for Best Animated Film. I actually think Frozen 2 is worse than those films, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, some years there are better films than others, so sometimes films that wouldn't make the cut in a very competitive year can do it if it's not a very strong one. But you're right, awards shows are many times unfair.Disney's Divinity wrote:Which is hilarious when you think of films like WIR, WIR2, BH6, Tangled.... No way Frozen II is worse than those films. It's not just the Academy Awards. Frozen II has the lowest rated score on both RT and MC since Meet the Robinsons. Critics have the same view on the film.

Wow even WIR2 was rated higher than Frozen II? That's surprising.farerb wrote:It's not just the Academy Awards. Frozen II has the lowest rated score on both RT and MC since Meet the Robinsons. Critics have the same view on the film.
I really hope Klaus wins but if that doesn't take it, then hopefully Toy Story 4. I still need to watch Missing Link although the trailer didn't really blow me away.

I highly suggest giving it a chance! I wasn't blown away by the trailer, and didn't see it at the theater. But my husband's aunt bought it and we watched it and loved it- and bought it ourselves- it's an extremely charming, feel-good, exciting (at times!) movie!!JeanGreyForever wrote: I still need to watch Missing Link although the trailer didn't really blow me away.

The moment the team behind Klaus finds out they are now Oscar nominees

That's quite impressive. They were the second studio with most nominations, only surpassed by Netflix, which got just one more than Disney.Sotiris wrote:Due to the Fox acquisition, Disney is getting more Oscar love than usual.

I wonder if Toy Story 4 has a shot then for the Annie or the Oscar.

Toy Story 4 also won the Best Sound Editing for a Best Animated Feature award from the Motion Picture Sound Editors this weekend.
I think Frozen 2 not getting nominated for the Oscar is the best thing to happen to Toy Story 4, because it lessened the the risk of it splitting its vote with another Disney sequel. I think Toy Story 4 will win the Oscar. It's the most popular of the nominees and while Klaus, How to Train Your Dragon 3 and Missing Link definitely have their fans and will probably get plenty of votes, too, there isn't a movie a lot of people are passionate about and rallying behind like Into the Spider-Verse last year.

^What I'm thinking!
You know, TS4 might be winning all of these big awards. But honest to God, I can easily imagine an upset a la Golden Globes. It's true Academy voters only choose what their kids like (
), but what if some decency pulled through and the Academy just want an original to win? I mean, freaking FROZEN didn't get in, so that's a sign that the Academy wants some originality back.

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2019
Yes, disneyprincess11, my take on Frozen 2 getting shafted is the same one as for why the Aladdin re-make received such drastically different critical reviews as opposed to audience reactions on RottenTomatoes. The industry as a whole is turning on Disney for the money-grubbing on display with so many sequels, re-makes, studio buy-outs, etc. Hopefully something original does win in that case, and not TS4--or HtTYD3 either for that matter.
