Aladdin Preview on Simba's Pride

I'm really really really excited about getting Alladin this fall but was somewhat disapointed by the trailer on Simba's pride. It looks like it isn't being restored at all. If anything the quality in the preview looked a little worse than my VHS

Disney has never used the restored version of their films on DVD previews, so you have nothing to fear. To be honest, I rather like this approach because then when I see the restored image on DVD, it'll impact me more. For an idea of what the DVD's picture will look like, take a look at the screencaps from this site: http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=12647 As you can see, the image on the DVD is much sharper and has less film prints than the VHS or trailers show.

I'll check out the trailer for Aladdin once my copy of Simba's Pride has arrive. I remember the trailer for The Lion King on Miyazaki's Sprited Away was grainy.

I agree. Disney never releases the movies with the full restored version. But there are many web pages that have screencaps inwhich you can see the "transformation" of sound, picture, etc..

Of course, the best news in that review was:

"Mercifully, Disney have not treated Aladdin to the inane vandalism inflicted on last year's appalling release of The Lion King. As far as I can tell, none of the animation this time round has been modified, and the colours have been transferred faithfully (The Lion King's colour timing was completely knocked out). Furthermore, the original Walt Disney Pictures logo and scrolling end credits have been maintained (although some additional credits have been added for the DVD restoration and remix)."

So a big "Yay!"

The extras sound fairly solid too.

haha, yeah Disney for some reason puts crappy quality trailers on their dvd's. Watch the trailer for The Lion King on the 2-disc set of that, the quality SUCKS!

I don't think Alladin is in need of a restoration - any move that was made with CAPS (Rescuers Down Under, on) was colored and composited digitally, meaning it should all be as perfect and clean today as it was when it was first made... the "restoration" on Lion King and B&TB was for IMAX release, they added details to the backgrounds, fixed little things that would look HUGE on a giant screen... Alladin was supposedly restored for IMAX as well, so there could be changes... (I always thought when the carpet was flying out of the cave of wonders that it kind of looked like the old 3D maze screen saver that came with Windows 95!) but I am not really for changing the movies - restoring yes, re animating, no... what will they do next? Put faces on the characters in Peter Pan as they fly by Big Ben!?

But, like I said, there should be no need to "restore" the picture for DVD in the purest sense of the word... they obviously will remix the sound to give it some nice 5.1 oomph, and what not... as far as picture quality on the trailer, keep in mind the trailer is recorded at a much lower data rate than a feature is... to save disc space for movie quality, so don't worry about that!
