Great that Klaus was recognized, but it's a pretty meaningless award if they didn't nominate Missing Link.

Listening to most often lately:
Christina Aguilera ~ "Cruz"
Sombr ~ "homewrecker"
Megan Moroney ~ "Beautiful Things"

Yeah, I agree. Those films didn't seem too worthy either.JeanGreyForever wrote:I agree with you that their 2019 films don't seem as Oscar-worthy as some of their previous ones. Then again, the same could be said about Brave or Big Hero 6 or even the original Frozen which had major issues with the plot and was carried along by the characters and songs.
I hope that too. It's a really good movie and deserves at least the nomination. I'm glad it was nominated for the BAFTA Awards.JeanGreyForever wrote:I hope Klaus gets some more love and gets Oscar nominated too.

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2019
After all these years I still cannot fathom why so many people hate Big Hero 6 so much. I watched it twice and found it quite phenomenal, so much so that I think it is a standout feature among the WDAS films of the last decade. I know that many were angry that it beat Princess Kaguya at the Oscars, and while I agree that Kaguya was more worthy of the award I found it difficult to swallow that because of the Academy's shortsightedness Big Hero 6 suddenly became an 'awful', 'lazy', 'mediocre', 'bland' film that everyone would bash because it was fashionable to do so.

People just have different tastes and preferences. Don't take it personally because a film you like may not be popular or vice versa. I haven't seen hatred per se towards BH6; mainly just indifference. People calling it bland and mediocre is not that bad. I also noticed you didn't defend Brave which was mentioned alongside BH6. It's interesting that when we don't like a movie, book, etc, the criticisms hurled against it are all valid and justified but when we do suddenly people are biased and unfair towards it.

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2019
My dislike didn’t really have anything to do with the film beating Kaguya. I often forget which films won awards until I look it up online, although BH6 over Kaguya is a disgrace of epic proportions.
I wish they hadn’t killed off Tadashi, tbh, and especially not so early in the film; I wish he had been thought dead, but it turned out he had been kidnapped and imprisoned by the villain because he couldn’t go through with killing a student of his. Instead of Hiro building a Baymax 2.0 after everything, Tadashi comes back. He’s the best part of the film. That’s why a sequel couldn’t help but be worse than the first one without Tadashi. The only condition I’d be interested in a sequel is if Hiro started getting hints Tadashi might be alive somehow throughout a new mystery, and meets him again around 3/4 of the way through the film to find that Tadashi has a secret identity of his own.

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2019
Lol, Don't worry Sotty - I've never taken these things personally.
Sorry if I came off that way in my previous post.
Yes, obviously people have different tastes. I think my issue was that I noticed many individuals' opinions on Big Hero 6 change following its Oscar win. It was also exacerbated by the fact I remember the film being woefully unpopular but cannot recall any specific criticism. Perhaps that has fueled my frustration.
I totally forgot Brave. I would be far more hesitant to leap to that film's defence as I find the movie uneven and of questionable quality, even if I do not doubt Brenda Chapman's emotional investment and passion in making it. I think Big Hero 6 is vastly superior and hence am far more baffled that people turn up their nose at it similarly to Brave.
Divinity - Agreed that Tadashi was an absolutely wonderful character. He was so appealing that I too cannot help but wonder why he had such limited screentime. What a lost opportunity.
Sidenote - Writing a forum post on an Android phone is a f*****g pain!

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2019
I actually like Brave better than Big Hero 6, which TBH I barely remember or care about - not hate, not love, just indifference. While I think Brave is far from perfect, I actually think it has a lot of heart and I think it has some sort of tenderness to it that other Pixar films lack. It might have not deserved the awards, but I'm actually glad it won over Ralph, which to me represents the new WDAS that I don't like.
All of it in the end is what Sotiris said, films are subjective and each one views films differently.

^^ I hereby declare you DVDizzy's god of fortitude by the name of Fairy-Fingers!
Regrettably I find typing on an Android phone fiddly especially on forums like this which sport an older design. Applying formatting using tags as well as proofreading and editing are far more difficult than they should be. Give me a REAL computer with a REAL keyboard and a REAL mouse any day over a touch-enabled device!

I understand what you mean. I think it's something I just got used to. For me a PC is mainly for programming or when I need to do things with large files. Everything else, especially Social Media, I do with my smartphone whenever...like during TV or lunch...

Wow! You're a programmer?
Programmers have my respect. I tried my hand at programming in 2010 - 2012 as part of my degree in Interactive Media and could never understand it. I am lucky I scraped a pass in the 3 or 4 modules that involved computer programming (we were using C# and pHp.) I had to attend additional private lessons (just me and a tutor) to get by and I still didn't get it. What I learned was superficial at best.

Thank you.
Yes, it can be hard and there are areas that even I don't know or don't understand.

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2019
I quite like Big Hero 6 myself, but I understand most of the criticisms. Besides the Lasseter formula well overstaying its welcome at that point, the movies focuses way too much on Hiro for my tastes when he's the what, fifth or sixth most interesting character in the movie, tops. He's a wash of a protagonist, although I'd argue that Miguel from Coco is even flatter. Baymax's charm is undeniable, and when he and the rest of the cast get their time to shine, it's a lot more enjoyable.
Brave, I'm not so hot on, but to be fair, i've only seen it once. There are some strong elements in there, but it ultimately comes off as too compromised for its own good, to the point that little of what it aims for works, which makes sense due to the behind the scenes drama. I also feel that way about Ratatouille and the Cars franchise.

Big Hero 6 wasn't a bad film and I don't remember anyone who outright hated it. I think the film just didn't have much staying power. I bought it but realized I never had any interest in rewatching it and the only character who people still seem to remember or care about is Baymax who really is the highlight of the film. Even the TV series came out with little fanfare or promotion unlike the Tangled series which I still see heavily marketed.

The Oscar nominations are out. Frozen 2 was snubbed!
I'm glad Klaus made the cut! This makes HTTYD the only trilogy to have been nominated for an Oscar in this category. We'll see if the inevitable Incredibles 3 will be able to repeat this feat.

Absolutely thrilled that 3 out of 5 are all originals. Major congrats to them!
Really liked Klaus, but haven't seen the other two yet. Would be amazing to see them beat Pixar
Still really damn disappointed and shocked that Frozen got snubbed. Love the first one with all my heart, but I think the sequel was actually better. I think it should have gotten in over HTTYD 3, which was pretty forgettable in my book.

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2019
Maybe I am mad but I would hazard a guess Jennifer Lee is not too devastated with Frozen II being snubbed. I daresay there may be a lot of WDAS employees who are thrilled at the the diverse slate at the Oscars this year. Their film may have been ignored but I am sure they'll cheer on for the directors and animators of lower-profile films that are finally getting their chance to shine.
Disney corporate is likely another matter however.

Also this is the first time a WDAS film wasn't nominated since Winnie the Pooh.
