Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
So yesterday I wanted to watch Sleeping Beauty and almost couldn´t. Once it got to the Main Menu I couldn´t press Play to watch the movie.
The first time I could access the Extras Menu and the rest of the content. Couldn´t play it either but I could navigate it. The second time I couldn´t even do that. I tried everything and nothing worked. The only thing I could was change the overall background display (from night to snowy day to night to rainy night).
...finally, don´t know how, the disc finally played the movie.
I get that this one was the first Disney animated movie to be released on BD and also was the early stages of BD. In the menus it even says that it could take up to 3 minutes to access the content. However not even that. I let it pay the full motion background time (over 6 minutes) and not even then.
I have to say that I changed BD players and with that first one didn´t happen. However, how come with a more recent BD player the Sleeping Beauty BD would give me problems now?
Has this happened to any of you before? How do I handle this situation if it happens again?
PS
When first I got Sleeping Beauty I had a small size TV where I found the video quality amazing. However, this time I was surprised to notice in my 32 inch TV that certain scenes in the forest looked blurry. Have you noticed this? Is it just me? In that case, latest releases of SB fixed this?

Re: Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
I have also notices that some shots in the forest are blurry... but I highly suspect that traces back to the original photographing of the setup under the camera, so nothing can be done about that.
And as far as I know, all SB blu rays have the exact same transfer...
Sorry, can't help with your playback problems.

Re: Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
I noticed a little difference between the Platinum and the Signature. It's the same transfer, but I think the bitrate in the Signature might be better.
Re: Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
Fareb, ok, but the same shots are soft, right?
I recall immediately after "I wonder", Aurora turns away from the tree branch and is stopped by the owl, who keeps asking "who". That shot is soft.

Re: Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
Here's one shot that always seemed pretty soft to me. The forest animals are all very sharp but Aurora herself is a blur. I'm assuming this was the case in the original film.

The lack of yellow eyes in this shot (despite having them in every other restoration and even at the end of the film when this laugh is reused) is another that's always bothered me. It's possible this was an issue with the original film but somehow I doubt it.

Re: Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
Interesting picks, JeanGrey....
So the shot with Aurora.... yes, this is one of the ones I had in mind. And if you look closely, it is only the animals in the foreground that are sharp. Both Aurora and the animals on the branch and on the log next to her are soft/blurry. Consider that characters were drawn on different cel levels for a shot like this. I suspect the lower levels look blurry, and the top one is sharp. Could be one of the cels was dirty or something... but Im pretty sure it traces back to the source film.
The shot of Maleficent really bothers me... cause like you said, her eyes have always been yellow in previous releases. And this shot makes me wonder whether the film was tampered with during the restoration. And her skin has always been greener rather than bluer... but that is a separate issue.

Re: Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
That's true, the owl and the birds are also blurred so I'm assuming this was the intention of the original film, or if not intention, it ended up like that in the final product. So the blurry shot can be excused then.
When it comes to her skin, I've heard that her skin was never the bright green that many people associate her with. Instead she was purposefully given a very pale and eerie almost grayish color to look unnatural like a cadaver. That gray color would easily look almost like a mint green or pale blue-green, especially in different lighting. Her skin color varies a lot in the animation cels though so it's hard to tell for sure like in the following two examples.

The drastic color change of the minstrel has been brought up before as well. I think Disney Duster did a good explanation once about how the gold color seems more accurate because his cup is the same color and gold makes more sense for the cup's color than the green. His hair also has a very unnatural greenish tint in the top image which further lends to the theory that green may have been incorrect all along.

Re: Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
If you notice in the first cel of Maleficent JeanGreyForever posted, Maleficent is all darker, her skin, staff, purple collar, etc., so she must be in a darker scene. In the second cel, she's all lighter, so she is in a brighter scene.
The whole previous Special Edition restoration of Sleeping Beauty had a greenish tint that was orobably wrong.
They did tamper with the film for the Platinum. They made a shot of the dress changing from blue to pink a fade in color instead of a spreading of color.
The proof is here. A frame from the Special Edition is on the top, and the tampered Platinum Edition version of the very same frame is on the bottom:

Re: Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
That's true, I noticed as well that the colors and lines are a lot darker in the first cel. I wasn't sure if that was how the cel actually looked but probably it's just the lighting of how the cel was photographed before being posted on the Internet.
I remember Aurora's hair always had a greenish tint in the 2003 DVD. Strangely, I preferred the shade of pink for her dress in that restoration especially during the end scene. It reminded me of pink lemonade for some reason lol.
I remember you've posted that before (although for some reason, Photobucket images aren't showing up for me and possibly a few other users). It's a real shame that Sleeping Beauty was altered like that. Tbh, this change bothers me a little less than some others like Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast, only because the magical color change happens so fast that unless you pause the film during the correct frame, you'd never notice that Disney altered/removed the effect. But really, it's a matter of artistic integrity and still a serious blunder whether it's noticable or not to the average viewer.

Well I know from knowing the movie so well the first cel is when she is in a darker scene, outside her dungeon (but still in her castle) at night, and the second cel is when she is at the christening, which is a brighter scene.

Re: Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
I wasn't sure about the first one but I did recognize the second one. That explains the difference in lighting.

Re: Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
Well, I know the whole color thing is a debate for this movie...
But I think we can all agree the white eyes for Maleficent are off: her eyes are yellow in all other shots... and in all previous releases.

Regarding the dress - The Platinum Edition is the correct one.

Maleficent is not supposed to be green. She should be pale. Her eyes in that shot should be yellow.

Agreed, I hope the 4K restoration can fix this. At this point, I most want 4K versions of Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Sleeping Beauty to fix the color schemes for the former two films and any remaining issues for the latter.Marce82 wrote:Well, I know the whole color thing is a debate for this movie...

This is what I always thought. A pale gray or mint color anyway. Her skin is pretty much only bright green in merchandise, probably because of how the Wicked Witch of the West has come to typecast witches. In the movie, her skin only looks more green from the lighting of her flames or the Forbidden Mountains where everything is tinged green.farerb wrote:Maleficent is not supposed to be green. The dress Flora is making pink? How do you figure the Platinum Edition made it correct?farerb wrote:Regarding the dress - The Platinum Edition is the correct one.
By the way, here's a not non-blurry version. I had to cut off some of the images, but you can still see they are the same frame:

I can see they are the same frame. The one on top is wrong, the one on botton is correct.Disney Duster wrote:The dress Flora is making pink? How do you figure the Platinum Edition made it correct?farerb wrote:Regarding the dress - The Platinum Edition is the correct one.

Re: Help with my Sleeping Beauty Platinum BD!!!
Regarding the dress, I think the picture at the top (2003 Special edition DVD) is the correct. Because if you look closely at the dress in the Platinum edition picture you can still see the lineart/linework/lines of the splashes. Escpecially on the dress arm closest to Flora. The right arm from our point of view. Which looks odd when the dress is in one color.
