Disney will never stop their games. They like to control the outcomes as much as possible. It devalues the process--and it was already skewed--because people don't get to judge everything anymore. Better songs get overlooked because Disney decides to focus only on one in particular, perhaps one that is not the highlight according to the viewers.

Sotiris wrote:Really odd Disney's only campaigning for Best Song. You'd think they'd at least do so for Costume Design, Production Design, and Score as well. Hopefully, they'll submit the film in more categories despite not listing them in their FYC website.
I hope so too. It would be unfair not to give the people who worked in those departments a chance.

Yeah, they could have easily scored a nomination for Best Costume Design like Cinderella and BATB both did. Especially since Black Panther's win showed that the Academy is willing to vote for films that have costumes that are not the typical European fare seen in most Hollywood costume dramas.

Well... I hated Beauty and the Beast, but I'll say this in its favor - it had really good production values. Aladdin did not. And I think Disney knows it and couldn't be bothered.

I personally didn't like the costumes and production design of Aladdin either. But I felt the same about Maleficent and that got nominated for costumes.

Wow, congrats to Aladdin! I'm glad it beat The Lion King and pleasantly surprised that it won out over Toy Story 4.

Not surprising, it's near B&tB in my eyes as far as being the next-best re-make after The Jungle Book. I hope it wins more to make the egg on the critics' faces even greater; the stark difference between them and the audience reactions was an embarrassment.

I am glad that I never doubted this film. I remember so many thought this wouldn't hit a billion for a long time, even though I pretty much assumed it would from the first. I'm certain the same will happen for Mulan, off the back of love for the animated film despite how badly Disney's bungled the re-make itself.

Aladdin got snubbed at this year's Grammys. :( Not a single nomination whereas The Lion King got five and Toy Story 4 one.

I got the Aladdin soundtrack this weekend. It was down to $6.99, which is why. I really only bought it because it's Alan Menken + Naomi Scott's performances; it wasn't an urgent purchase for me otherwise. I like Zayn's part of the end credit song, but too bad they didn't get a better girl for that. I really hope there's music in the sequel. No, it won't be as good as the original soundtrack from the animated film, but Scott's voice is really pretty. I've had "Speechless" on repeat all day.

The TLK re-make's soundtrack was the same price, but I already bought the two songs worth having from that (Spirit and CYFtLT); I only really plan to get TLK: The Gift at some point whenever it's at a low price.

^I'm glad Disney apparently submitted the movie for more categories and not just for Best Song.

By the way, this is not about Aladdin, but it's related to it:

It's a shame, because I think he would be a great love interest or action hero for other movies. Hopefully Aladdin becomes a trilogy at least, and he gets big paychecks for doing those. :(

I saw that news on Twitter. Naomi has done a lot of movies since then and really gained traction so it's a same that Mena's career hasn't taken off the same way since.

"Speechless" is such an addictive song to sing along to. It's been my theme song the past three days because of something going on in my personal life right now. They should've got someone like Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, or Christina to sing an end credit version of the song. It would've been amazing. Such a shame it didn't get an Oscar nom.

And I have to just say that, while the re-make's songwriters aren't perfect, I would be fine with a whole new soundtrack by them + Alan Menken for an Aladdin sequel. It'll never compare to the original soundtrack, but I'm here for it. And from the way they talked together in interviews, I think Menken would at least enjoy working with them. I don't think he had that positive an experience with B&tB... Who knows about how he really feels in regards to Miranda on TLM, we'll see. And getting more of the re-make’s iteration of Jasmine will be a delight.
