Re: Comparing Home Releases Cover Arts
My favorite covers for these two movies are the Gold Collection ones, though I wish Bongo and Mr. Toad had been featured in them as well, and not just the characters of the most popular segment of these classics. I like the Masterpiece VHS for Fun and Fancy Free too, but I wish the background was either all green or all drawn and not a combination of the two. As for the Masterpiece VHS for The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, I like that it features both Ichabod and Mr. Toad, but they aren't doing anything interesting there and the background with the film reel is a bit random. I like the limited edition cover Marce82 shared too.

And Mickey and the Beanstalk and The Wind in the Willows were also part of the "Walt Disney Animation Collection: Classic Short Films":

I remember that cover from when I was a child. It's not bad. Some other segments from the package films were also part of that collection:farerb wrote:TBH I never grew up with these films. I only had Peter and the Wolf from this VHS but that's it... So I don't really have an opinion on their covers... I guess the Gold Collection covers are nice.

I like the "Mini Classics" covers for Willie the Opera Whale and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow! The others aren't bad either, just not as good to me.

Re: Comparing Home Releases Cover Arts
Perhaps because it is one of Disney's more known and beloved classics, or it's a princess film, it seems Cinderella has no bad cover. Not terrible at least. None of them are terrible. The most terrible one to me is the UK VHS. The background is not really a background so much as pink and purple space that was never in the movie with the palace stairs appearing detached from the palace. And the Fairy Godmother stolen from the Classics VHS is one of the worst decisions possible. Why couldn't they steal the on-center Godmother from the Masterpiece VHS? At least I like the coach and Cinderella's pose on that one, and with her dress floating about her, though she's not drawn the best. My favorite cover is without a doubt the Classics VHS. Nostalgia in play? Probably. But I love how it isn't a mash-up of lots of different parts, it's just a scene from the movie, and the pumpkin transformation is one of the very best parts of the movie. Plus I love the look of wonder on Cinderella's face while her Fairy Godmother is looking casual as she does the amazing thing Cinderella is looking at, and the transforming pumpkin, with the genius idea of the white and gold coach part melting over half of the pumpkin, is just beautiful. Plus the magic effects and castle top it off, and it's all just shaded and lighted so beautifully and with lovely colors, it looks so lush. My second favorite is the Masterpiece laserdisc. That cover is made to be like a storybook cover, perfectly befitting the film and very classy, and I love that Cinderella, with her great pose, and her Fairy Godmother, also in a great pose, behind her, are like illuminating the title, and all the rest of the choices of characters and set pieces and their placement is perfect. I also love the purple coach. Nostalgia plays a little part there, too. My third favorite cover is the Masterpiece VHS. I love how it tries to fit in pretty much all the beloved stuff into it, and the background is the garden as well as the path to the palace. Plus I love the Fairy Godmother above the title. I just wish the dancing couple was turned so were seeing Cinderella's face and not the Prince's. My third favorite cover is the Platinum Edition. I like that like most other Platinums, it has a lot of stuff with the title in the center, but again, I wish we could see Cinderella's face. The Diamond Edition is surprisingly my fourth favorite cover, just because I guess I don't think it really tells the story like the others do, even though I love the Fairy Godmother and magic on it, and the pink, strangely. My fifth favorite cover is the Target exclusive of the Signature. But everything is rather horribly off model. The Signature is my sixth favorite, but it should have been Cinderella in a rush down the stairs and looking anxious about the situation, and just be on-model and better drawn. The steelbook is my seventh favorite, I like the color and the use of the film's castle as the background, and it looks classy. The Diamond Edition DVD is my eighth favorite, because it's kind of nice with Cinderella holidng out her newly transformed skirt as the background for the title kind of. And the UK VHS is my ninth place pick because, yeah, I think it's the worst one.

Re: Comparing Home Releases Cover Arts
I agree with Duster, Cinderella's covers are great. As with Snow White, Disney has treated Cinderella with some awesome looking cover over the years
I don't think there is one I don't like, but there are elements I don't like though. On the Black Diamond Classics cover, I don't like how her arms are drawn, they seem too big
On the Masterpiece cover (both the US and the UK version), the mice are too big, but they are on model, so that's great. On the Signature cover, her slippers have bows instead of hearts. If I were to chose a favorite one, it would be the UK Masterpiece cover. I love her pose, I love the purplish pink background, I love the composition, and the Fairy Godmother on the corner, even if it's recycled from the Black Diamond cover.
In order of preference:
1. UK Masterpiece VHS
2. Signature Collection (Target)
3. Platinum Edition
4. Black Diamond
5. Diamond Edition (I include both the Blu-ray and the DVD covers, because I think they're equally beautiful)
6. Signature Collection (regular slipcover)
7. US Masterpiece Edition
8. Signature Collection (BestBuy)
9. Laserdisc
The one thing I love about every one of Cinderella's covers is Cinderella herself. She's very hard to draw, but the artists who drew her did an awesome job, and she looks beautiful on each and every single one.
Same thing for Snow White. These two are the two most respected Princesses, in my opinion.

The Black Diamond VHS cover has always been my favorite cover for this release, and one of my favorite covers for a movie on home video. I had the Masterpiece VHS as a kid and always wanted that Black Diamond edition!

Re: Comparing Home Releases Cover Arts
The UK VHS and Signature Collection covers are my favorites. The Signature’s Target exclusive is nice, too. They aren’t the most on-model covers, but they aren't too bad and get the vibe of the film better for me than the others. I always associate Cinderella with that magenta / pink color from the ball, not all these blues.
I remember the Platinum Cover had several mock-up covers that were voted on. They mostly switched around the mice, the carriage, and some other things in there. I had saved the pictures at the time, but that was about two PCs ago, so… They’re long gone.
Maybe somebody else has them though. And the Platinum also had a Box Set, didn't it?

Re: Comparing Home Releases Cover Arts
My favorite is the Platinum Edition DVD, though I agree with Disney Duster that they should've shown Cinderella's whole face instead of the prince's given that she's the protagonist. My second favorite is the Diamond Edition Blu-ray (the one without the golden frame) and then the Classic VHS. I really like the composition of the Masterpiece VHS too, but it's not very well drawn and the mice are too big compared to Lucifer, as Sicoe Vlad pointed out. I had the Spanish version of the UK VHS and I like it as well, but Cinderella is not too on-model there and again there's the problem with the mice. The one I like the least is the Signature Collection, I find it ridiculous that she's looking at us and smiling in that situation. If it wasn't for that, it would be a nice cover. The Target Exclusive could've been fine too if Cinderella had looked like herself in it.

It's curious that they already had the drawing of Cinderella holding the slipper that they later used for the Diamond cover.
Here's the Platinum Box Set you also mentioned. I really like this cover. It's very classy.

Are these the mock-up covers you were talking about? I couldn't find them in a higher size. Yes, those are the covers. They really did pick the best one, too.
I didn’t get the Platinum Box Set for Cinderella like I did for TLK and Aladdin. I think it was the last one? I always wondered if it sold poorly and that’s why TLM didn’t get one.

Re: Comparing Home Releases Cover Arts
Love hearing your thoughts on my favorite movie's covers guys! I agree Sicoe Vlad, Cinderella and Snow White have all gotten pretty good covers and they are probably the most respected princesses with Snow White being the most respected. Lol DisneyFreak5282, it's funny you wanted that first cover way more than the one you had! I strangely don't mind the mice being kinda big on these covers, but I agree they really should be more believably sized. And damnit Cinderella's shoes have hearts, not bows, Signature covers!
Thanks DisneyBluLife. I really don't like the Royal Edition covers myself though.

I have always wanted that transforming Cinderella at the bottom of the second cover to be used as the whole cover for a cover. Then that would be my favorite cover.D82 wrote:

I always loved the Masterpiece Edition VHS cover the most since it had all the principal characters and Cinderella actually had orange hair. The Platinum DVD Cover is similar and I like the composition of it too but I don't like Cinderella's new coloring.
I also like the Diamond Edition cover and the Platinum Box Set. I think the latter was a Steelbook cover as well.

Hm. Ok yeah it has all the principal characters and orange hair and that's really good.
Yes the Platinum Edition gift set cover was used for a steelbook when the Diamond Edition came out.

Re: Comparing Home Releases Cover Arts
Ok... so...
I actually think the mini classics covers are pretty cute. Specially Mickey and the beanstalk... and The Wind in the Willows is pretty nice too, considering Mr.Toad is usually overtaken by Ichabod on covers.
The Mickey Animation Collection is pretty great too, maybe even better. The Wind in the Willows one... nice rendering, but its an awkward composition. Specially considering that it looks like Mr.Toad is landing on his butt.
So about Cinderella... I disagree that most of its covers have been good. She is poorly drawn in about half of them. I had a conversation with a disney artist once about how she is possibly the toughest female character to draw on model from Disney. I have read that too on Andreas Deja's blog too.
So...
Best ones: a tie between Classic VHS and Platinum edition. Classics: LOVE that she is in rags. I feel like this movie is heavily marketed towards girls, and the epicenter of that is the darn ball gown This movie is for everyone.
Characters are on model, and even her hair color is smartly executed (who knows what shade of blonde it is on that cover!). Platinum: Nice composition, extremely well drawn and shaded. Even if the prince is off model and steals too much attention. Cinderella isnt 100% herself, but it is a beautifully executed drawing of a beautiful woman.
Worst:
Diamond DVD: dont know who that is, but it isnt Cinderella. Face is off. Dress is off. Fairy's arm is too short, her pose is stiff. Fabric overall is poorly drawn and is often illogical (lengths and movement patterns)
Diamond blu rays: Mice are well drawn, but all faces are off-model. Cinderella's eyes are uneven, mouth is poorly drawn and even the way she is holding the shoe feels unnatural.
Meh:
Masterpiece: Great composition, pretty good execution. But its the darn cover that led to them changing her dress from silver to blue. Damn you!
UK: she is fairly well drawn, except the skirt makes no sense (different lengths in different parts) and her face is a little flat. But she looks like she is in an empty soundstage!
Laserdisc: kinda looks like a poor collage. Strange lighting on her.
Signatures: good ideas, but kinda poorly executed. And I agree with some of the comments about her expression and movement while running down the steps... oh well. Still better than Diamond!

I agree. I don’t think she looks perfect in any of them, but my least favorite is definitely the Diamond. I hate the pose and especially how her mouth and the coloring makes her look like a character from Scooby Doo.Marce82 wrote:

Since I didn't rank them before, I'll do it this time:
1. Signature
2. UK VHS
3. Signature Target
4. Platinum
5. Master VHS
6. Signature BestBuy
7. Platinum Box Set
8. Laserdisc (I love everything about this one except for Cinderella herself)
9. Diamond DVD
10. Classic VHS
11. Diamond
As for the other mock-up Platinum covers, the only one aside from what they ultimately chose that I like is the one of the prince kissing her hand with all the guards behind. I think that’s a promo image from somewhere else they thought about using, or was that the first time that pose appeared?

Re: Comparing Home Releases Cover Arts
The only ones I don’t like are the first VHS and the Un-Anniversary Edition, which is way too crowded together. I always had a fondness for the Masterpiece DVD cover, although I wish the too-tiny White Rabbit wasn’t thrown on there off to the side--even if that's the best drawing of him on any of the covers. I think the 65th Anniversary cover is the best one, overall. It’s a better arrangement of the images from the 60th cover combined with the Cheshire Cat artwork from the Masterpiece cover (which is the best he looks on any of the covers, imo). And its logo is my favorite after the one for the Masterpiece DVD cover.

Regarding Alice in Wonderland, my favorite is definitely the Masterpiece VHS. I remember getting it for Christmas when I was little, and rushing into the living room Christmas morning to see it lying on the chair unwrapped.
That said, I always thought it was funny how they depict Alice smiling at the Mad Hatter's tea party, because if you watch the movie she doesn't seem to be enjoying herself at all.
