Four new theatrical animated projects in the works, and I’m willing to bet anyone out there that one of these projects is going the route of “traditional animation”![]()

Skyler Shuler appears to be hinting at a hand drawn Disney film in the works on Twitter. Is that even possible? Do they have the equipment and artists necessary for such an endeavor? Why the quotation marks around “traditional animation” and why the wink? It’s aggravating to be toyed with when something like this is so dear to people.

He also said Elsa would have a girlfriend in Frozen 2 and we know how that turned out...An unconventional-looking CG film like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse I could believe but an actually hand-drawn feature? No.
Anyway, here all the hints that he gave on the matter. Not that I buy any of it.

Skyler Shuler: You’re going to be shocked with a project they’re working on for 2022, all I’m going to say.
Q: How do you know for sure there's going to be another hand drawn feature from them? That sounds like hopeless wishing to me.
Skyler Shuler: I’ll say I’ve been privileged to hear some things in development that aren’t ready to be shared yet.

Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney
Does he have a reputable history besides the Elsa having a girlfriend thing? I agree though that the closest we may get to hand-drawn is something like Spider-Verse. Still surprised we haven't seen other studios jump on that bandwagon.

I’d love that. It wouldn’t be as satisfying as new 2D animated feature, but Spider-Verse was the most beautiful animated film I’d seen in a long time.Sotiris wrote:He also said Elsa would have a girlfriend in Frozen 2 and we know how that turned out...An unconventional-looking CG film like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, I may believe but an actually hand-drawn feature? Why would they? Spider-Verse only grossed $375 million worldwide despite being based on a very popular IP. That's a commercial failure by the industry's standards.JeanGreyForever wrote:Still surprised we haven't seen other studios jump on that bandwagon.

Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney
Sony compared Spider-Verse's grosses to their other animated movies, rather than to the live-action Spider-Man movies. Into the Spider-Verse is Sony's highest grossing animated movie domestically and their third biggest animated movie worldwide.Sotiris wrote:Why would they? Spider-Verse was also made on a $90 million production budget, so it didn't need to reach Spider-Man: Homecoming numbers in order to be a success in Sony's eyes. From what I've read, Sony Pictures is very pleased with the movie's box-office performance, which is why they're moving forward with sequels and spin-offs.

Nothing’s going to change in the industry as a whole because of Spider-Verse, just like nothing changed after “Paperman” was well-received. That was Sotiris’ point, not whether Sony themselves considered it a success or not, and they’re right.

looks great!
I'll admit, I was obsessed with that song for a couple months when it first came out, but hearing it in this trailer makes me cringe.

This is a dead horse to anyone in the comments section of that video, but why did they have to ditch the old voice? Americans love accents.

Klaus looks like the opposite of Paperman. Paperman looked more 2D but the stiffness and rigidness of CG became apparent as soon as the characters moved whereas Klaus looks more CG but it has the fluidity and smoothness of motion traditional animation is known for.
Still, I much prefer this:

Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney
Yeah I agree. Klaus looks more like The Lion Guard or Tangled's series than a true traditional animation. What I like about traditional animation is that it's literally a moving painting. Klaus looks too digital.

Was this posted? It's basically a "part two" fundraiser for a documentary.

A new feature documentary about where the art form of 2D hand-drawn animation is today.

Hand Drawn is a new feature-length documentary about 2D traditional animation's current state and future! This developing project features interviews of both independent and mainstream animators who are keeping the medium alive whether for filmmaking, TV productions, video games, or otherwise. Those from all different corners of the animation industry in North America and overseas discuss in-depth where this foundational art form is today since it began more than a century ago.

To reiterate, hand-drawn animation still lives at DTVA (and Big City Greens is the proof!):

Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney
Just watched Klaus, really inspiring stuff. I'd say the wait definitely paid off. I appreciate the fact that they did something disney never would. They mostly kept the Christmas stuff grounded. There is no magic involved for the most part, except its sort of implied a bit at the end. But the premise of Christmas is kept fairly realistic. Guy makes toys for a town that has not yet had a functional mail system. The ridiculousness of Santa clause as we know it is mostly done in the form of rumors for kids.
Animation technique, as you all already know was really unique. I'm inspired to see if I can get the same effects in my own work now. haha
No movie has pulled off this concept art look this effectively before I don't think.

Re: Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney
Klaus was such a beautiful movie! Beautiful animation that has to be seen to be believed, and a beautiful, heartwarming story. I loved Jesper. And I loved the leader of Krum, sometimes she was hilarious! A perfect Christmas movie.
