Jungle Book (1967) digital transfer missing shading lines?
Jungle Book (1967) digital transfer missing shading lines?
Hello!
This morning I was viewing the original limited issue of Jungle Book on dvd and I decided to compare it to the digital version (the platinum/diamond edition, I presume!) which is available in the UK on DisneyLife. I noticed that in many scenes the interior shading in the characters’ mouths, present in the original dvd transfer, are missing from the digital version. If anyone wants to compare for themselves, have a look at the scene towards the beginning between Bagheera, Mowgli and Kaa. In the original dvd, the characters have shading lines/patterns inside their mouths when they speak but in the digital version these shading lines/patterns are gone - just blocks of colour. Wonder why? If it was of result of ‘restoration’ it makes me wonder what other line ‘art’ has been removed from the film.
Small point but puzzling anyway!

Woah! Could you do screengrabs of the limited edition?? Or both, to compare?
I only have the platinum edition.... with its crappy cropping! >:(

I have screengrabs but am unable to upload them for some reason. I could email them to you and then maybe you could see if you have more luck getting them uploaded?

I'm curious about this myself since I don't own the limited edition DVD anymore. I don't remember the Diamond Edition restoration getting much flack from purists (beyond the aspect ratio) but with Disney, you never know what issues are hiding in plain sight in their transfers.

hey everyone,
These are the images MattDean was talking about... kinda scary to think of the possible implications here. What other artwork has been tampered with???
Thanks MattDean!!

Thanks for posting! Is it possible that the shading is just part of damage to the film print or unintentional errors that were meant to be cleaned up digitally?

Um.... the film was made in the 1960s... there was no such a thing as digital cleanup.
And no... damage to a film print wouldnt stay 'within the lines'... this was intentionally altered.
And it is clear whoever the animator was for that scene shaded the inside of the mouth to imply darkness.

Have you ever noticed that the Blu-ray has a shot that is in 1.66 aspect ratio?
