David Magee has written the script.
I think Melissa McCarthy is funny but I don’t think she’s right for this role. Her voice is so high pitched! They would be much better served casting a man in drag. Drag is mainstream now anyway. They could have a moment here but they’re passing it up.

I like Melissa but I don't think she's right for this role either. She doesn't have a low-pitched voice (and if she tries to alter it, it will undoubtedly sound fake), she doesn't give off a menacing vibe, and she doesn't sing very well. I'm also concerned with the direction they might take Ursula based on this casting. Ursula has an elegance and suaveness to her and I hope she doesn't get changed into the loud and crass type of character Melissa is known for.

Well, lucky for you, her husband isn't directing this film.

Rob Marshall is a very true to source kind of director. Lin Manuel Miranda is obsessed with the property as well. I’m 100% they will have her play it close to the original. Melissa McCarthy is insanely talented. She has the range to do this. And I firmly believe she’s a stronger choice than Rebel Wilson who would definitely have struggled to play the part as it should be done.

I agree on all accounts.

Melissa is a way better actress than most people think. In fact, out of all the Oscar nominees in her category last year, she easily gave my favourite performance. Such beautifully nuanced work!

And I have to laugh at Sotiris, who is worried about an actor not looking menancing enough, but loves the 'Aladdin' remake, which absolutely butchered one of the best Disney villains.

Better check your crystal ball again. I never said I liked Jafar in the remake. In fact, I thought he was the weakest part of the movie. You can enjoy a movie and not like every single element in it.

I would much rather have Melissa McCarthy than Rebel Wilson or Lady Gaga. Like with Lea Michele as Ariel, I would be down on my knees grateful if McCarthy was cast at this point if they were actually considering Gaga for God's sake. We already knew this wasn't going to be great after finding out those are the people they're considering--or were, anyway. Let's at least try to keep it above unwatchable territory.

I think Gaga could’ve been great, but the issue always would’ve been the CGI they’D have to do to make her larger. I’m sure there would’ve been backlash over the weight change, as well as a lot of the same CGI woes that plagued the Genie in Aladdin.

No matter who they cast, Ursula needs to have BITE to her. She needs to truly feel rotten to the core, and I think McCarthy has that in her.

Hm. I am willing to give Melissa a chance. I do like her.

If they had cast Lady Gaga, who is my favorite choice so far, they wouldn't have to make her big in weight. Just like Sherie Rene Scott in the Broadway show.

I don't know how true this is, but Melissa has supposedly been already cast:

It's not true at all. The photo's fake. It's an edit of this picture of Queen Latifah as Ursula from the Annie Leibovitz shoot.

Queen Latifah could have been a great choice for Ursula.

Whoops! It is kind of obvious in hindsight.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind Queen Latifah either. At least she and McCarthy are big or at least curvy, and both are great actors.
