Who says its official? As pointed out by the post below you, there is no direct statement about Johnny leaving the series. Its only Stuart Beattie's interpretation based on where thing currently stand. As the article itself points out, Stuart Beattie has NO direct involvement with what is going on, so therefore any words from him contain NO official confirmation towards anything at all.

More to the point, given the phenomenal success of movies like Halloween (2018), a movie which made more $ in its opening week than ANY of its series' previous instillments did in their entire lifetime gross (and even more than at least 3 of them combined), and it happened to feature the two original lead actors reprising their iconic roles, along with returning to the same tactics, methods and elements of the original.

If Disney is truly being their true smart selves, they will know that they can't just fully reboot and completely write off/recast an actor with who a character has become so close associated with, hence one of the main reasons why Solo bombed so heavily for them, not to mention for Sony the Amazing Spider-Man movies, of which Disney had to make an unprecedented deal with in order to salvage for them.

In short, if it is a complete reboot/re cast/write off, NO ONE, NOT even Disney themselves, will EVER end up being truly happy with it. It WILL overall fail, NO MATTER how it may initially seem.

Why would you report this after what I just said above about its source?

Jack Sparrow needs to at least make some appearance in the movie. The series has been all about him and any new movie won't be the same without him.

It would be easier to re-make Iron Man without RDJ honestly. You can't make Pirates without Jack and you can't have Jack without Johnny Depp. I'm sad that his personal life has gotten so crazy, but if he can't be trusted to do as good of a job today as he did on the first few films a decade plus ago, then maybe it's time to end the films. Personally, I'm still waiting for National Treasure 3 and Nic Cage isn't have as crazy as Mr. Depp!

A neat read with some good ideas:
The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Series Doesn’t Need Captain Jack Sparrow Anymore, Especially When It Has Elizabeth Swann

We are hearing from multiple sources that Disney is indeed ready to part ways with Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow character that has led the franchise over the last 5 films. We are also hearing the studio is looking to center the franchise on Redd, the recently revamped character in the popular Disneyland attraction who is also a meet-in-greet park character. Now it should be noted that a script is not finished, and things can certainly change.

It is unclear if the previously reported Joachim Rønning will return to direct, as the previous information had been based on an early version of the project before reboot plans were revealed. Jerry Bruckheimer will once again board the ship as producer. The ending to the last film left the door wide open for a potential Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Brenton Thwaites, and Kaya Scodelerio (who is contracted to return)-led sixth film, but it is unclear if these characters will be part of the reboot at this time.

Q: You've hired Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to work on a possible Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. Can Pirates survive without Johnny Depp?

Sean Bailey: We want to bring in a new energy and vitality. I love the [Pirates] movies, but part of the reason Paul and Rhett are so interesting is that we want to give it a kick in the pants. And that's what I've tasked them with.

The fate of the franchise is in limbo.
Disney film production chief Sean Bailey’s effort to retool and relaunch the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is back in uncertain waters after the defection of Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick, the hot-shot writing team behind Fox’s mighty Deadpool franchise.

Disney insiders say Reese & Wernick are no longer working on a sixth installment in the swashbuckler series that has grossed $4.5 billion in worldwide box office and $2.5 billion more in global merchandise since it first set sail in 2003. The films have all been built around Johnny Depp’s antics as the bleary buccaneer Jack Sparrow, but the actor’s recent travails and steep salary prompted Bailey to consider a new course for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and its flagship brand.

Bailey’s new direction began with the October hiring of Reese & Wernick, who are viewed as tone-savvy specialists in subversive action comedy after the success of the Deadpool series (which has posted the two largest opening weekends by R-rated films in Hollywood history) and Sony’s Zombieland (which celebrates its 10th anniversary with a sequel this October).

Bailey has been vocal in his excitement about the hiring, telling reporters and colleagues that the scribes were going to “make Pirates punk rock again” and give the franchise a much-needed “kick in the pants” that would revive the off-kilter charisma the brand exuded in its early days. Those high hopes faded in recent weeks.

Disney insiders are divided about what happens next. Some say a search is already underway for viable replacement options, others say the once-proud flagship of Disney’s live-action fleet may be headed to dry-dock for good.

Interestingly, there has been some spitball discussions about revamping the property for a Pirates of the Caribbean television series, but the budgetary and logistical challenges of a seafaring series may be too daunting. That small-screen tack wouldn’t be of any help to Bailey, whose moviemaking division needs major firepower just to keep up with its in-house competition (Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Animation Studios). Since taking the reins in 2010, Bailey’s division has delivered one $1 billion-dollar performer (2017’s live-action Beauty and the Beast).

Ahh no that's a shame ! And very quick from announcing / launching the franchise to them leaving the project ?

I wonder why Ted & Terry won't come back ... has there been bad blood between them and the studio ?

I believe there is..
I read somewhere that they didn't receive any type of royalties for their work on the upcoming aladdin, by their work I mean that they were responsible for the original writing of the 2D outing where this live action flick is pulling it's inspiration from. Upon viewing this ghastly new trailer...I can see their point...

They did the first three, then they were only consultants or something on the next I believe ? Just wondered why they chose not to continue, or if it was Disney who made that choice for them.

I guess it's official then. Johnny Depp won't be part of the franchise's future.

RIP Pirates of the Caribbean. They can try a reboot, but I doubt it will do well beyond the first one without Depp's involvement, for better or worse. The best case scenario is bringing Bloom and Knightley back for a sequel.

So now it has been proven through court that Johnny Depp is indeed innocent and his wife was the real abuser, will they revive the sixth movie and postpone the spin-off?

Wow, is that really true that Amber Heard has been proven to be the real abuser? I haven't really taken sides on this conflict because I only read such conflicting accounts about Johnny Depp's alleged behavior.
