This is great news! But... are we sure this is the same Bo Peep from TS1 and TS2? This redesign makes me kind of suspicious. Wasn't the whole outfit made of porcelain?

She doesn't look that different to me. The visual render isn't finished yet, so I'm sure in the final film, she'll look more complete.

Her whole body was porcelain but her clothes weren't. They were made of some other material and you could see the movement of her skirts when she moved. There are plenty of porcelain dolls with cloth dresses, so it's not surprising that she'd have gotten a new outfit in the time she's been gone.

Oh great, thanks for the clarification! That makes sense.

She looks quite different to me now. If they have taken the trouble of redesigning her, it must mean she still has a sizable role in the movie. While I think she looks prettier now, I don't like it when they change the design of a character for a new installment, like they did for instance with Tony Rydinger in Incredibles 2. They don't seem the same character anymore.

Regarding Bo Peep's silhouette in the first picture, she looks more like a shepherd there. Maybe she has ended up in the country? It reminded me of the ending of the Johnny Fedora and Alice Blue Bonnet short, when the two hats finally find each other and live in a farm. I can already imagine the ending of Toy Story 4: Bo Peep doesn't want to leave her new home for whatever reason so Woody decides to stay with her and has to say goodbye to the rest of the gang.

I don't like it either. It's a form of recasting. Skyler Shuler of The DisInsider claims that's not her final look.
Q: Can you more or less confirm that this is what she'll look like?

Skyler Shuler: This was rendered quite some time ago. Her look will likely change if it hasn’t already.

That's a plausible theory but I'm not sure I like it. Woody abandoning Bonnie and all of his friends to be with Bo Peep doesn't feel right. They would never consider doing that if it was the other way around.

Pixar's Christmas card for this year. It's reminiscent of "Once Upon a Wintertime" from Melody Time.

Keanu Reeves Confirms He’s in ‘Toy Story 4′; Talks Landing the Role
http://collider.com/toy-story-4-keanu-reeves/
When we spoke with Reeves, the actor talked about how he landed the role and working with the creators, “I got a call which was really cool out the blue from the lovely people at Pixar and the creators of this number, this edition, or continuation of the story. They pitched the character to me and then we spoke and they allowed me to kind of riff on it.” Reeves says he’s done four recording sessions for the film so far.

Exactly.
Sotiris wrote:Skyler Shuler of The DisInsider claims that's not her final look.
Let's hope her final look is more similar to what she looked like in the other movies.

Yeah, that's true. To be honest, when it was announced the movie would be a romantic comedy about Woody and Bo Peep, I liked it because it was something different for the franchise, but I was a bit worried too. The romance between them has never been too important in the films and Woody's friendship with Buzz, Jessie and the rest has always seemed stronger than their relationship. So I don't know if it'll be believable that they suddenly have a strong passion for each other. Well, maybe they can achieve it through flashbacks showing us special moments between them we hadn't seen before. We'll see.

Thanks for sharing! That's another proof that Bo Peep still has an important role in the movie.

Personally, I don't mind slight alterations to Bo's design, but I see where others are coming from. Although I will say that the wide eyes doe look is very similar to how Anna/Rapunzel/Moana/other Disney animated women are designed. Which actually brings me to my next point...

My bigger concern is that they're going to alter her character/retcon her to be more "modern".

Admittedly her character from the first 2 movies was underplayed (and unfortunately absent in 3), but I liked how Bo was a character who is not an energetic bundle of energy that wanted something grand, but at the same time clearly knew what she was doing ("Watch the sheep," anyone? :P ) and is a grounded voice of reason.

If she does become a main character/important supporting character in TS4, I wonder if Disney/Pixar could maintain that same sense, or if they would have to fall back on copying tropes from other modern Disney movies to make her more "interesting" for the audience.

But again this is all very early on so we'll see as we move along.

That's not a positive development in my book. Her design was somewhat rough but unconventional and unique and made her stand out. Making her rounder and smoother to conform more to the Disney/Pixar house style robs her of that distinctiveness (to an extend).

I feel the same way. I'd hate it if they changed her personality to make her more modern or relatable.

Re: Toy Story 4

How do you follow a film like Toy Story 3, a perfect trilogy-capper? “That was the biggest question,” says director Josh Cooley, making his feature debut. “All of these films are Woody’s story. I think of 3 as the end of Woody’s time with Andy. So now he’s in this brand new room, this is the beginning of his time with Bonnie…That puts him in a situation that we’ve never seen before, and a lot of great stuff came out of that.”

Plot details are unsurprisingly sparse, but the official synopsis promises that “a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy”. Key among the new arrivals is Forky (Arrested Development’s Tony Hale), a “spork-turned-craft-project” who doesn’t actually want to be a toy. “One day, we were sitting in the room and, as a joke, just mentioned, ‘What would happen if a kid made a toy in this universe?’” Cooley tells TF. “Toys have a job to do. They’re for the kids. So we were joking, ‘A spork’s job is to help you eat, and then to be disposed. If that spork came to life, and now had a completely different purpose, what would that be like?’”

Other new arrivals include carnival prizes Ducky and Bunny, voiced by Key and Peele. “It’s really hard to not ruin takes with laughter,” says Cooley of their improv-ed banter. While there are fresh faces, Cooley also wants the film to feel familiar. “This has been a tricky balance,” he says. “This is right in line with the other films, but it’s not repeating anything that we’ve done before. It’s new, but it feels familiar, which is a very tough thing to do.”

Taking the toys into the wider world will be crucial to breaking new ground. “The majority has never been seen in a Toy Story film,” adds Cooley. “Having the toys go outside of the Tri-County Area [is new] – not just for us in the film but also for Woody.” But the emotions could be as familiar as ever, with Tim Allen recently commenting that the story was so emotional he “couldn’t even get through the last scene”. So, do we need to bring tissues? “A lot of people grew up with these characters, they have a strong nostalgia for them, and they feel like family to them,” considers Cooley. “It might not be a bad idea...”

For director Josh Cooley, he started by expanding everything we've come to know about the Toy Story movies...literally.

"One of the ideas that got me excited to work on Toy Story 4 was that we were going to be expanding the world of Toy Story", Cooley told Fandango. "This would be the first time the toys would venture outside of the Tri-county area into the unknown. We decided to literally expand the world by changing the aspect ratio of the picture from the previous Toy Story films (1:85) to widescreen (2:39). The wider image really pushes the sense of scale and puts you in the big world right alongside Woody. The best way to experience the scale and to see the amazing detail in the film will be to watch Toy Story 4 on the big screen."

"I think one of the big reasons the Toy Story films are so entertaining is the characters," Cooley said. "Part of the excitement of seeing a new Toy Story film is seeing the characters you already know and love, and meeting what new toys Woody and the gang come across. It’s fun to see the toys we know again, but I am VERY excited for the audience to meet the new toys we’ve created for this story. Creating new characters that fit in the world alongside the classic ones was some of the most fun I had working on the film."

This is her final (or close to) design. What have they done to her?

I don't hate it, but I still wish they'd left the design alone. Either way, I'm going to enjoy hearing Annie Potts in the series again no matter what else they might do to screw it up.

I still don't think she looks that different except her eyes have a slightly different shape, her eyeshadow is gone, and her skin doesn't have that pink tint to it anymore. However, her face and hair are still shiny like porcelain.

She also has a differently-shaped head, a less pronounced nose, and real eyelashes instead of drawn-on ones. These are a lot of changes which make her look more plastic than porcelain.

I don't think we can comment specifically on the nose and head from the angle of that picture. At least to me, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference especially since the perception of the second render is skewed. The same goes with the eyelashes. They don't look "real" to me. Before your comment, I assumed they were as drawn on as they are in the original model for Bo Peep, just darkened.

I wonder if the--bandage?--on her arm and the fabric on her head are supposed to cover places where she's been broken (perhaps on her arm and her bonnet). Sort of like things a child or parent would do to 'band-aid' an object they don't want to throw away.

That's quite likely. I guess her face also broke and they had to perform plastic surgery on her. :P
