I think we're all grateful they didn't go through with the cameo.

I’m sad to say that I did not like this movie, even though I really went in with an open mind. My expectations may have been a little high, I think I read in Luke’s review that it was maybe “the funniest Disney movie,” but to my mind, “Emperor’s New Groove” remains in its throne. I liked parts of the movie (especially the Princess scene which I thought was mostly tasteful and funny), but the rest of the movie was a dated mess with obvious and sophomoric jokes. I didn’t have an issue with the plot or Vanellope’s characterization, I thought she came out very sympathetic— but I almost didn’t recognize Ralph, his whole character and personality changed between the first and second movies.

Just not a great movie, or great successor to the original film. :( But based on the BO, I am sure we will see a third one. That’s a real shame, in my opinion. The original is a great, small gem in the the new Disney Revival, but with the attempts to franchise it, it’s going to become this behemoth juggernaut of cross connecting Disney franchises.

The page wouldn't load for me. Why would TGG appearing have been a bad thing? I'm assuming a clip of them would've appeared rather than that they made CGI versions of the girls, lol. If anyone can explain, I don't mind having the scene from the film they're referring to spoiled; spoilers have never bothered me.

Here's a mirror link. There aren't any spoilers. They would have made CG versions of them. It's not specified if they were going to have a speaking role or not. I just find that exploitative and tasteless like those holograms of dead celebrities.

I love the Target cover.

To those who saw the movie: What did you think of Ralph releasing a virus to Slaughter Race even though he wasn’t even trying to damage the world? I’ve been thinking about it all day (I have OCD) since Doug’s review. The book had worse interpretations: The Little Gold Book literally had Ralph giving Vanellope a GOOD LUCK ON YOUR FIRST RACE card right before releasing the virus, which would have been downright evil and the novel doesn’t even have Ralph apologize and take responsibility. He actually lets Vanellope think it was her fault. So, I’m so glad they made him much more remorseful. Did you also think Ralph was too whiny, even though that was the point?

So I saw this movie today.... sigh. And my reaction was the polar opposite to the first one.

A bit of background: I was never much into videogames, and the first movie was advertised like a game-reference extravanza. So I didn't watch it. For years. I eventually did... AND I LOVED IT. I realized that the original characters and story were so great, it didn't matter if I didn't catch those game references.

So I went to see the sequel, excited to dive back into that world. And sadly... it was the opposite experience: the characters and story are DROWNED by all the internet/corporate references, which I did understand, but I didn't care about... the shallowness of memes is what is celebrated in this film, and it will be dated within a year. Even worse, the story was pretty weak... we barely get to spend time in any sort of game setting, and we barely see any characters from the original other than Ralph and Vanellope. The former comes across as extremely unlikable, and the latter seems like a she forgot who she was in the original film.

I'm not going to go into details cause spoilers...

Oh, and the scene with the princesses was ok... a lot of easy jokes, and let's face it: it had NOTHING to do with the story we were being told. Just cross-promotion.

Oh, one question: SPOILER AHEAD! So the guy who ran the dark-net... who had the little tumor brother growing out of his neck... WHY did they do that "joke" with that character? What was the point? And they did that whole shtick on an episode of Family Guy years ago... for an entire episode. And darn, it was awkward.

In all seriousness, I understand people not finding the Disney Princess scene all that funny (humour is the most subjective thing in the world), but it shouldn't be that surprising Rich Moore would bring a certain amount of bite and satire into his Disney films, considering his past work.
reminds me of a comment I read in another forum... the people making Disney animated films today dont seem to actually like/respect classic Disney, they want to turn it into something they wouldn't be embarrassed to like. Could you imagine if Clements/Musker or Don Hahn back in the 90's said something like they cant relate to Cinderella or Snow White?

It's not just Disney. A lot of studios are doing this parody thing way too often and mocking anything that's sincere.
this has been a problem with children/family films for a while now, since at least the late 90s early 2000s. Nothing can be sincere, quiet or contemplative anymore, it must always be frantic, always entertaining, funny! A rollercoaster ride! But never sad or too disturbing.

and I call bs on not finding any room or having enough time for Calhoun/Felix. Uh, there's a simple solution to that.... cut down the princess/meme scenes!

I wouldn't have minded a cameo in theory, but it probably would've made me sad that Betty White is the only one of the four ladies still living. :(

Disney released a video that features some of the storyboard panels from that early iteration of the scene. It also includes a glimpse of Mark Henn's pencil test for Ariel.

I know that he was feeling extremely hurt and blindsided, and as he said, he just wanted to slow down the cars in Slaughter Race, not destroy the game/the world. Obviously he was being selfish for wanting to cause any harm to Vanellope/anyone else, but his hurt feelings were very raw at that moment. I think it was a huge learning moment, and helped R + V's friendship in the end.

Thanks for posting!
"I just love that [the princesses] teach her about how every princess must have a song that expresses her quest, and when she finds the place that inspires that, the song ensues and it’s simultaneously very Disney and very different from Disney."

Every princess except Merida. Though technically "Touch the Sky" does function as her 'I Want' song and expresses her feelings and desires. Pixar should have allowed Brave to be a traditional musical. It really suited the story and the setting. It would have improved the movie significantly, in my opinion.

I saw it. I liked it. I little more than the original. The original was Ralph wanting to be a good guy and then...somehow he gets to be. The sequel was Vanellope bored of her routine and wanting more. I liked that. But I didn't like Vanellope's song. I thought it was meh in melody.

The princesses were fine. Hey, what was with Ariel singing to save Ralph? What was it her singing was supposed to do?

What was the Family Guy shtick?

But Ralph didn't want to hurt anyone, just slow down the cars.

He would've hurt Vanellope's feelings, at the very least, though...she'd be sad that she wasn't driving her usual best, for example. I think Ralph's goal was for her to feel not good enough in Slaughter Race so she'd come back home, but as a result of even just that, what I don't think Ralph thought through because he was being selfish because *he* was sad, was that Vanellope would be depressed. Obviously he didn't know the true harm that his plan would've caused before doing it.

(I hope that made sense...it's 2:20am and I need to fall back asleep. :headshake: )
